Major flaw with brass pivot pin. Wears out faster than the stock nylon pin?? E46 clutch replacement.

- It's time to do a clutch in the 330ci race car AGAIN. With the addition of the smaller supercharger pulley pushing the car to 401 ftlbs of torque, the stage 2 ECS tuning clutch can't hold the power. After pulling the clutch to replace it I find another problem, the brass pivot pin has prematurely started to fail. This is the second time we have observed this brass pin break down far too quickly.

Had this surprise on a 93 SHO 5spd, there wasn't good content like today so I replaced the factory nylon with a hardened steel roll pin, lasted 120k. Interesting stuff and saving a lot of headaches. Have a great weekend!
Did you have a performance clutch?
Tenza Motorsports nah just a Sachs aftermarket, slight upgrade from stock but nothing special
Thanks for telling us. Saved me from another headache on my daily
No problem!
Good information! Not what you would expect.
I’m just happy I realized what it was doing before it caused something serious to happen.
Well explained, I'm not a car guy and I understand 100%, Q. what's a clutch lol.
It’s the system that allows you to put power to the transmission in a manual car. The clutch pedal is how you control wether the clutch is engaged or not.
The pivot you took out of your car definitely looked like brass, which can be found on ECS, ebay, etc. for as little as $20. However, there are some - like AGA’s - that are made from silicon bronze, which is a much harder and stronger material than brass. I wanted to point that out, because they are similarly priced to the stainless ones but look almost identical to the brass ones. Silicon bronze offers high load bearing strength and greater self-lubricity than the stainless.
Thanks for the information.
Was about to ask this because i just purchased the aga bronze one
This is BS. I installed a URO silicone bronze bushing on my E63 M6 - failed after 3k miles. Paid $48 for it.
Excellent content!
Glad you enjoyed it
It's often the little things!
Crazy how a part that costs so little can make such a big difference.
But you're saying that the brass wears out on performance clutches.
Surely with a standard clutch the brass would still be an upgrade as it isn't holding extra tension.
WOW, I'm on my third one and I thought my pressure plate was just fucked, thanks for the info
Let’s hope my stainless steel option works better
Looking forward to that e36 final weigh
We are too, hoping that will come soon!
Tenza Motorsports based on my experience gutting my e36 half as hard as you did......that is gonna be too much fun, gonna need a z3 rack to catch the oversteer
I wish we could. We have a super small budget for the 36. Thats why so much of what we are doing is handmade or left over parts from other projects.
Tenza Motorsports ehh the e36 rack is pretty good, my only mistake was forgetting to turn off Trac control and I lost it drifting on a "Mexican" country road. Do your self a service and pull the fuse for abs and trac control......wish I had
hey do you need to tap it in for it to seat or just put it in and go because I replaced mine while I was diagnosing my new clutch (pressure plate bolts backed out) and now my engagement is really high on my clutch pedal it takes maybe an inch or two to disengage and it engages right at the top. So I'm wondering if my clutch disc was worn which it didn't look like it or my pivot pin may not be seated all the way making it way closer to the pressure plate than my old worn nylon pin, any help would be appreciated, I'm not looking forward to taking the trans down for a third time.
It should just slip right in. If you’re pulling down the transmission again I would definitely make sure that it’s in all the way though. The S54 wagon I’m working on right now, I had to tap an OEM nylon pin In because it tight for some reason. I didn’t have to do it very hard.
My brass pivot still solid after 5 years, 2 drift seasons, and 1-2 years of daily driving. Either I got lucky or you got fuct.
That’s a crazy thing. I had it twice in a row. The tip of them just ground down driving around casually
@@TenzaMotorsports well after seeing this video and now understanding how the pin wears. I’m just not gonna risk it and go with the stainless on this clutch replacement. Let’s just say I got lucky 😂
hi man
I was following your supercharger videos.
I just wanted to ask you something about this kit.
do you use the stock ECU? thanks
Yes i use the stock DME. I just had I tuned by Active Autowerke. It’s included in the supercharger kit.
@@TenzaMotorsports nice
i really appreciate your help thanks
and congratulations on the car and the channel
thanks
No problem! let me know if I can answer any other questions you have.
Just pulled my slave cylinder to look inside because it was popping out of gear. Brass dust everywhere. Wish I knew this two years ago.
Same. I have fought this issue twice now. It’s surprisingly common
I'm pissed... i just installed a new dkm stage 1 clutch kit with a brass pivot pin in march 2020
is the steel one any good?
Can’t say haven’t tried it.
Quick question: My 2011 128i suddenly started feel like the clutch was slipping with less than 60k miles. Not gradual. Could this be a broken pivot pin? Or does that show up differently? Or could it be something else? I just can't imagine a clutch would just go away so suddenly. Thanks.
This is primarily an e46 issue from what I’ve heard, but It could be an e82 problem as well. I had a 2011 135i and the clutch went out at 45k miles. So it might just be your clutch.
If your clutch is slipping it’s 100% the clutch
Adamantium is the only way to go my bro
If I could I would!
