Eddie, thank you for reuploading this episode. This episode is sad because Pat left to work at Cory Publishing in New York City. Pat was one of my all-time favourite "Another World" characters. It was good to see that Sandy finally realised what a huge mistake it was to get Cecile pregnant and marry her.

Can you help me string together the storyline with Sandy and Cecile The last episode I saw they were given a small party at the office before they left to get married in the Dominican Republic And then the next available episode is this one So I am not sure what happened Cecile is talking on the phone from her hospital bed to Sandy And he seems reluctant and cold towards her

Thanks. The scene with Pat and Jamie around 20 minutes in is just fantastic. A last hurrah of the psychological, introspective Lemay days. Beautiful work from Richard Bekins and Beverly Penberthy, showing the powers that be just what they lost.

The original storyline was to feature him in the resurrection of Steve Frame to be reunited with Alice. That's why he came all the back to Bay City from Australia. By that time, however, AW was so centered around Mac/Rachel they couldn't have Steve reuniting with a character who hadn't been on the show for years. So, they fizzled out Alice and had Steve end up with Rachel. This was idiotic, however, because in the Steve/Alice 1.0 version, Steven clearly declared his undying love for Alice.

@@darkcloud1948 Did you actually read that was the story planned and they changed it? All I ever read, at the time, was that they wanted to resurrect the triangle, I had a few problems with the characterization early on, but I grew to like Canary in the role. Not saying he was Reinholt, but I could accept him.
That said, Steve does not choose Rachel. He was never in love with Rachel the first time. He slept with her once. He did marry, but that was after Alice left him with no explanation and he sort of gave up. As soon as he saw her again it was clear he never stopped loving her.
Of course, the dynamics had changed. Rachel was now a heroine and there was a new Alice. The character had been off the show for a couple years. She had come back, what, 6-9 months before Steve in 1981? And had been recast once since then. Linda Borgeson didn't start that long before Canary.
I did read, in Lynda Hirsch's soap column, in 1983, that AW did some sort of pol or survey. That fans wanted Mac with Rachel and so they went that direction. She was a fan of Canary's work there and didn't understand why that automatically meant that Steve had to go.
Me, it wasn't so much that they would write him out without Rachel. Diana had been written out as well as Alice. I guess he still had Jaime and Sally, but she wasn't happy that he chose Rachel. Anyway, okay, write Steve out. My big issue was why the need to kill him. Break them up and have Steve leave town. Steve and Rachel had just had a big argument over her funneling money into his company without his knowledge. If he just leaves town, you can always use the character again down the road. Courtney came back a year later. Maybe Reinholt comes back at some point. Just seemed pointless to me after they had just resurrected he character.

@@lancer3412 Exactly. I always thought the writers could have "fixed" Steve's death by making this something Jamie wrote in his book, out of anger that his parent's reconciliation didn't work. The writer's could have backtracked the story to the point where Rachel and Steve have their big argument over the funneling of the money into his business -- and ended their relationship at that point. This could all have been explained to the audience in dialogue or flashbacks. Steve, then realizing this enormity of his error, could then have gone back to Alice apologized for his stupidity. THAT would have been an excellent storyline, because of their prior history. I always thought they should have shipped Steve back to Australia to regain his fortune, then return to Alice when he was "worthy" of her. Alice, meanwhile, could have left to focus on her medical career and built an illustrious reputation for herself. Their pairing could have been reflective of the two-career couple and the problems that type of relationship inherently faces. It would have been a contemporary storyline for the 1980s. Also, you would have had the Frame family anchored by Steve/Alice, plus the Cory family anchored by Mac/Rachel. With all of the step and half children of the principals, there would have been some interesting inter-family couplings for years to come.

@@darkcloud1948 Alice did come back as a doctor when Courtney returned. Steve did have a company in town, but they could have had him leave that with Quinn, allowing her to stay on the show. Then it's just Harding construction. Steve leaves town to start a new company. Something that he wants to do on his own.
I have seen that argument online in the last year or two and distinctly remember one exchange. This is about your pride and being stubborn. You bet I'm stubborn. How do you think buildings get built. As far as my pride goes, for a lot of years my pride was all I had. And noone is taking that from me, Rachel, not even you.
Come to think of it, that episode is probably on this channel. Eddie seems to be reuploading all the episodes that had disappeared. The 82-86 stuff. Anyway, I watched it not that long ago and remembered and liked that exchange. The writers could have just as easily gone in the they break up direction leading Steve to leave town.
As for Alice, they could have reconciled offscreen or bring Steve back sometime after Alice returned. Late 83, wasn't it? Bottom line, for me, despite the characterization for Rachel changing so much, it didn't ring true to me that Steve would choose Rachel.
Remember the 1989 anniversary episodes. They brought Reinholt, as a ghost, and Courtney back and then don't give them one scene together? Are you kidding me? It's with Rachel and Jaime instead.

@@lancer3412Everything you stated is true. That argument between Rachel and Steve would have been the perfect point to break them up as a couple. Canary's contract wasn't up until several weeks later, so I guess P&G, or whoever, wanted to get their money's worth out of him -- however, he wasn't featured in the episodes nearly as much afterward. I too came to grow accustomed to Canary in the role and I don't understand the resentment toward him by some fans of the show. Of course, he wasn't Reinholdt. He was portraying and older, risen from the ashes of the helicopter crash Steven Frame. Who knows if Reinholdt could have pulled off that characterization? Reinholdt's Steven Frame reunion with Rachel and Jaime was okay, but the writers not giving all of the Steve/Alice fans the spiritual reunion of these two characters was just cruel. I hadn't watched the show since the second Steve/Alice break-up, but I tuned in for the 25th anniversary episodes, because of the heavy promotion of the Reinholdt/Courtney return appearances. This was all a big tease, because they never had a scene together and I was disgusted with the writers/P&G/and NBC disrespecting viewers like this.

So the writers turned Ada into a hairdresser. I know she was like a barhop at Mary's Place (or whatever that bar was called) later in the decade. AW writing took a huge downturn after head writer Harding Lemay left IMO.
