Travelling The Orkney Islands For 7 Days

- Travelling the Orkney Islands for 7 days. Lying off the north coast of Scotland, Orkney is an archipelago of around 70 islands. A place where humans have lived for more than 8500 years and history is never far from where you look.
I start my journey in Scrabster on Scotland’s northern coast and catch the ferry to Orkney with my campervan. I always enjoy exploring lesser-visited places and during my time on the Orkney Isles, I visit other smaller islands in addition to the Orkney mainland. I managed to travel to Westray Island, The Isle of Hoy and the Isle of Rousay.
The more I explored Orkney, the more I became fascinated with its history. I delved into its Neolithic past, including a visit to Skara Brae, The Stones of Stenness and The Ring of Brodgar. I also visited the Old Man of Hoy, a natural wonder, and learned about Orkney's role in World War I and II at Scapa Flow. I explored the charming towns of Stromness and Kirkwall and paid a visit to the unique Italian Chapel, a testament to human creativity on these islands.
Whether you're planning your own Orkney adventure, looking for a NC500 detour or simply curious about these Scottish islands, I hope my Orkney travel guide video will help provide insights into the beauty and history of these incredible islands.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
One of the best channels on UA-cam. You're a naturally gifted presenter. From Melbourne, Australia.
Thanks so much Greg! ❤️
I agree and I'm in Melbourne too.
Well that bought back some nice memories of my visit to Orkney many years ago. I remember finding one chambered tomb at the side of the road - there was a small honesty box with a torch inside which you could borrow and then had to crawl along the entrance tunnel to the main chamber inside. Quite a different experience to super touristy places like Skara Brae.
Wow, that sounds brilliant. So many of these smaller sites are so quiet too
Thank you for sharing. Your vlogs get better and better.
That’s so kind of you to say, thank you!
Hi, Michell , my friend. How do you do.
I enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Well done on swimming in the Orkneys !
I worked in the 1970’s with someone who had been stationed in the Orkneys during WW2. He was an engineer looking after searchlights and spent the entire war getting bored. The searchlights and antiaircraft guns were there just in case the Germans came back to Scapa Flow. He would describe the day that it was lovely and warm, with the blue clear water the lads decided to go for a swim. They like yourself to discovered how cold the water is !
When I visited, I thought the Orcadian’s speak with a Welsh accent rather than a Scot’s accent. What do you think ?
Nice video, looking forward to part 2.
It was very chilly! 😂
The accent is a little different to the typical Scottish accent, I almost think it sounds like a song in a way!
You are amazing, your videos sre truly inspiring ❤
Glad you like them!
Your videos are so much like the classic travel shows I used to love growing up. Production is great and always full of interesting info and of course, so well presented. Keep it up👏🏽
Your best yet… gorgeous photography, jaw-dropping drone shots and fascinating insights into the history. Just jam-packed with content, I was transported for a wonderful half-hour to the Orkneys. Thanks so much!
That's so kind Ben, it means a lot!!
Orkney* not "the Orkneys", easy mistake but you wouldn't say "the Englands" or "the Hawaiis".
@@ruthaisling🤣🤣🤣🤣
11:00 There's something incredibly surreal (and emotional to me for some reason) about the contrast between the ancient moss covered tombs and the pristinely smooth modern protective cement "caul" that encases it. The sunlight streaming in through the open skylights seems to really enhance the feeling.
It really is amazing! I’d love to visit Orkney again someday
Ive really enjoyed your video tours of Scotland. Greetings from Florida
Glad you like them! Send some sunshine my way haha!
Hi Ruth. Many of the female UA-camrs talk about the merits of the countries where they were born and raised. This time, the ancient ruins were talked about very vividly, and I think that there are many similarities between the round tombs and megalithic civilizations in Japan, and although this has not been proven, there was once a connection between them. I want to imagine that.
That is so interesting, next time I am in Japan I will try and visit some of those places. Although it's a different time period, I did think the dinosaur museum in Fukui Prefecture was excellent. Probably the best museum I have visited in Japan.
Thanks for the video, I lived in Orkney for 21 years, just moved back to the mainland.. The Orkney brewery was my neighbour, great food and beer.
It's a great place! I'll need to try the beer next time!
Most of your life is listening to others and awareness of how life is and has been through the ages. I appreciate your uplifting message to make this world feel welcoming in far away homes and people like Scotland. Appearances matter the white wool hat compliments the warmth of the red winter coat, they fit the days stories. Thanks for the adventure
Thank you very much for watching the video!
Thank you for showing us the beauty of Scotland's nature. In the opening and other parts of this video, we can see striped rock layers on the coastal cliffs.
It is believed that long ago, more than 8,500 years ago, the seabed was uplifted due to tectonic changes, became land, and was further eroded, eventually becoming part of the coastline.
The grandeur of this natural process is truly awe-inspiring, isn't it?
It really is, humans are so small compared to the power of nature
Hello Ruth ❤, in Vietnam, when a loved one passes away, after 49 days there is a small ceremony and gathering to remember this person. The same way after 100 days. And every year, on the anniversary day of the passing (on the lunar calendar), there is a big ceremony and gathering to remember this person.
I'm so impressed with your channel - I have to remind myself you are an independent creator, because your production qualities and presentation skills are so high. Recent subscriber, and thoroughly enjoying being taken on tour to places I can't get to. (I'm in Australia.) I really hope you keep increasing your subscriber base because you deserve it.
Thanks Fiona, it's a lot of work but I'm glad I can share all these amazing places in Scotland through the videos!
hello ruth aisling l am david jordan form n lreland l love the visiting in scotland
This is a very beautiful and wonderful video.
I think adding a little bit of Japanese will give a sense of familiarity to Japanese people.
Thank you for your lovely comment!

Great content! Such interesting experiences, and relatable perspectives. Cheers.
That’s really kind of you, thank you! Glad you hear you enjoyed the video.
An absolutely fantastic trip to the Orkney Islands. Very interesting for me as a Norwegian.
Thanks for watching from Norway!
i went to orkney with a friend and her family about a year ago! so cool to see places i have visited and also places that we didn’t have time to see in your video 🥰 Hope you had a lovely time Ruth it truly is a wonderful place!
I'm happy to hear you've been too, I hope you had a great trip! I had the best time there, still so many more islands to discover so I'll need to plan another trip sometime!
So amazing ✨.
Ruth, you're really good at this and the quality of your videos is pro level. The voiceovers in terms of technical quality and content, the camera work, the editing, the drone filming, the shot choices--everything. Plus you make for a very appealing on-camera presence yourself. If you don't do this for a living then you should. Or would that spoil it and take away all the fun? In any case, another excellent video and looking forward to many more! 😊
Wow, that's so nice! Thank you and I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos so much!
@@ruthaisling Well, I've long wanted to visit Scotland, but after watching your videos I really really really want to visit it, sights, people, food--whiskey! A+++!

Orkney is my love. i was two times there and i think i was not the last one. Greetings from Germany
You should visit a third time!
Truly breathtaking sceneries. Impressive landscapes and amazing well-kept ancient ruins. I visited Isle of Arran in Scotland once 12 years ago and that is one of the most beautiful memories of my UK trip. Thank you so much for taking me to another Scotland trip in your video! Greetings from Japan.
Thanks for watching from Japan! I’ve yet to visit Aaran! Hopefully soon 🤞
@@ruthaisling- Arran really IS worth a visit.
It is so good to see so many high quality productions about my home nowadays, Orkney. I was born here and have lived here all my life and you could not pay me to leave, it is a very special place. Just so you know for the ferry animations it would be better to use a picture of the "Earl Sigurd" for the Inter Island ferries and the "Hamnavoe" for the Northlink ferry as the pictures you used were of the Shetland inter island ferry "Linga" and the Aberdeen ferry "Hrossey." 😃
I used to get Cheese patty suppers with a glass bottle of the Irn-Bru when i lived in the Shetland Islands. Hmmm making me hungry just thinking about it!
The Italian POW chapel was for me, worthy of a visit to Orkney . Thanks for sharing as it brought back many memories from our visit many years ago.
heaven on earth!!!!
Thank you so much for these fascinating videos. I'm from Peru, and your trips are almost other-worldly. Your presentation and personality make them great.
Glad you like them! 🏴
@@ruthaisling I really do. Your heartwarming feelings about Scotland make one want to visit. Oddly, my desert is normal to me, and seeing the green and brooks is fascinating.
I dumped my mother's ashes in the river across from the family home in 2005 in Concord, Massachusetts US. Sept. 15, 2024.
That was spectacular Ruth.
I am struck by the amazing scenery there wild & remote.
A lot of very useful information in this one.
The campsites are well equipped & reasonably priced
😊
Thanks Sean! Orkney was incredible, I definitely would recommend anyone to visit!
As Orthodox Christians we remember our departed loved ones 40 days after their death, 1 year after death and on other “Soul Saturday” services at church with a special boiled wheat and priestly prayers. Maybe you can visit an Orthodox Church in Scotland sometime! Thank you for your videos.
Maybe I will, thanks for sharing!
Now thats not bad Ruth, 5000 years old, longevity there is just simply amazing? Juhaptergee
Orkney was already on our bucket list and then this video came along!
I agree, it's so important to mark bereavement anniversaries. It's really helpful with dealing with grief.
my goodness you are a beautiful person, and these sites you visit are just a bonus.
Ive never been to Orkney but what a great place, love Kirkwall, and of course luckily a distillery. So much history
My favorite scotch, Highland Park. I’ve always wanted to tour the distillery.
Thanks Ruth. I’m related to the Harvey and Linklater families from Orkney, and have always wanted to visit.
I lived on Rousay on and off for 10+ years, but I learned quite a bit of Orney from your trip!
Orkney is quite a magical place, your video does manage to convey this, which is not easy.
The drone shots are good, do you do them yourself?
Ruth that was a wonderful video and has really enforced my desire to visit! But as I am a wrinkly now I found the edits at first a little too quick and difficult to absorb. Could you maybe divide the videos into chunks and increase the time taken? Whatever I love the information and gosh isn't it just beautiful!
Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment! I'm sorry if this video felt a bit fast paced. I was trying to keep the video around 30 minutes and fit a lot in. Longer videos (40 mins+) tend to be less appealing to viewers on UA-cam from my experience. I appreciate your feedback and I'll bear this is mind for future videos!
I was in Orkney several times many years ago. I remember the hole of Raul, skara Brae, The Ring of Brodgar and Yesnaby. On the cliffs I came across fulmars for the first time not realising that they spew vomit at anyone who gets too close….ruined my nice Goretex jacket 😅😅
BTW here in NJ USA currently he high price for Diesel is $3.85 per US Gallon or 3.08 GBP per US gallon so about .81 per litre as of may 2 2024
Hi Ruth, amazing video, we love Scotland and your brilliant presenting brings it all to life for us….. love your channel……we were wondering, how do you check if a cruise ship is in dock? Thanks so much! ❤
Thought of following in your footsteps (Van tracks ?) Realised, I'd never have he cash. Not cheap is it .
The old Okinawan culture was very similar to Japanese, they would have picnics outside the family tombs on certain days of the year ! One of the few things I remember from my time in the Air Force over 40 years ago !
Loved this video Ruth, I would love to visit, I have an EV are there plenty of charging places.🏴
Lovely videos thank you. Lots of interesting information content which I hope to bottle and head to the Isles.
Thanks again.
I have grown to love the Scottish accent. After our DNA test my wife found that she is over 50 percent Scott. Truely hope that we can visit Scotland before we expire !
Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens in California, I would love to be with you there , but I live in Indiana since 2021.
In NZ we have the body in the coffin and open for family to say goodbye in some Maori families . Love your videos. Want so much to return to Scotland
Are you and your husband traveling separately? Why?
Stunning views, stunning video, stunning host.
Thanks George!
That beautiful pale skin and that accent!😻
I'm going to run out of videos 😿
Good morning, when you on the isle of Hoy did you get to see Betty Corrigall's Grave. Regards Robin
Love the fact you eat meat and fish, nothing more boring than watching people ordering vegan dishes i spite of me eating 95 percent plant based.
Wow Ruth, what you have packed into this video is amazing. It was lovely to see the places we visited in our van about 8 years ago. We purchased Ring of Brodgar rings in Kirkwall, and the Jeweller made a wee Orkney Axe to wear on my Argyle jacket as well, it was a scaled down Kiltie pin, very unique!! The Neolithics are amazing. Highland Park is great Whisky, we couldn’t do the tour as our ferry left St Margaret’s Hope for Gills Bay before the tour started. We stayed in the Kirkwall Camp Site and motored around to as many sites as we could cram in. You did better than us on the small ferries to the remote islands. I could go on and on, we loved Orkney. Well done on your Orkney adventure, Cheers, Mike 🥃🥃👍
Thanks Mike, it sounds like you had an amazing trip there!
Broch isn’t pronounced like lock. The CH is extended and not hard.
Wow! What an amazing place and a fantastic video! Your style in covering the content is truly outstanding. I'm thoroughly impressed by your work. 👏🏼 Keep up the fantastic job!
Thank you Waqar, I'm happy you enjoyed the video so much!
This was a very interesting video. I can trace my ancestors (Muir & Pirie) back to the Orkneys. It's interesting to see how they may have lived there. Thank you for sharing. LG Canada.
Thanks for watching, have you ever visited?
Hi Ruth-san!
Do you want meet SHOTA again?
In Ohio, and much of the Midwestern United States, there are fascinating mound structures built by native peoples between 500 BCE-1500 CE (we call them the Adena, Hopewell, and Ft. Ancient peoples). They are beautiful (Serpent Mound is my favorite) and in the last 75 years we Americans have become serious about preserving them for posterity. We really need to cherish these sites of our ancient humanity. I was also fortunate enough to visit Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands in Ireland, and the sites in Orkney remind me of the ones I saw there. Love your channel!
Those all sound interesting places, thanks for sharing about them. I hope I can visit someday
Did you really say 4 million years? 400 hundred million years is more like it!
You speak too fast 。
so I can't relax and
watch 。
Take a breather ‼️
wow it`s such magnificent!
Your videos will help me to get used to English again, and very fun because able to concentrate on watching them. thanks for interesting videos!
Thanks for watching!
You stopped to visit the old man but not Betty Corrigall?
Passionate informative and fun.... Total package... Brilliant thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks 🙏
Fantastic video Ruth, the detail and commentary are great. I'm glad to see you supporting local shops and Aires. I see that the demon drink raised his head again 😂😂😂😂. It's good to get to know the locals as well, like the ferry man building his eco house. Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing the next one.
Thanks for your comment Colin! Visiting the local shops and places is one of my favourite things to do!
REVERSING ONTO the FERRY...
Yes, indeed. FERRY from Mainland AUSTRALIA to KANGAROO ISLAND!
Shared the ride with about 1000 Sheep on their way to mainland.
Oh wow!!
The Norwegians/Vikings decimated the Pictish population of Orkney and Shetland over hundreds of years.
😰
I've been watching and listening to you for a while now, your voice helps me sleep, thank you for everything you do Ruth, stay happy 😊
You are so welcome! Thank you 🙏
@@ruthaisling Just keep doing what you're doing, you put a smile on people's faces who would otherwise struggle to do so... I have a feeling you will know what I mean 😘
SIGN: "If you are STRANDED on the island, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard".
COSTGUARD: "The TIDE will go down in about 6 hours. Have a nice day and walk around the island. Till then."
😂
I was hoping you'd make it to Highland Park. I haven't been there, but it's one of the first scotches I bought several years ago, and my correspondence with the distillery online has been nothing but a delight. I must visit them.
You must go..Start planning!
What an absolutely stunning vlog, and you have one of the most relaxing voices I've heard.
Wow, thank you!
I was in March on orkney. It was cold but beautiful. I visiting the similarly places than you. I ride my bike and use my micro campervan.
Sounds great! I loved my time there 😍
Do you follow Harry Dwyer's channel? He is navigating his tiny two person inflatable speedboat clockwise around the entire UK. His most recent video 'Giant Waves in a Tiny Speedboat - 1700miles pt18 ' he went along part of the Scottish coast, past the Old Man of Stoer sea stack, around to Cape Wrath and stopping in Thurso. Some of the scenery reminded me of your explorations, but not sure if you have visited there in your videos.
I hadn't heard of his channel, it sounds really interesting. Thanks for sharing, I'll definitely check it out
Spectacular hardly describes it! I was interested to see you can climb down a ladder inside the burial site. Reminded me of a similar place near Lakenheath in Norfolk, England. It's called Grime's Graves but turns out it is a Neolithic flint tool mine. Only 4,500 yrs old so quite a bit younger than your Orkney site!
Oh interesting, I'll check it out if I'm ever in the area!
I really enjoy watching your videos on Scotland. I only visited Scotland once, long before you were born, and I enjoyed it. I always wanted to get back there and visit the regions you explore, but since I am a little too old to physically do it now, I have to do it vicariously through your videos. BTW, as a Yank, I do not know if I could really handle eating Haggis.
Haggis is really good if you don’t think about what’s in it! 😂
NiceBoy 🌻 California 🌻 Kiss's Yoooo ! 💋
Wow amazing video you put a lot of time into your channel Ruth 🥰 I purchased a go pro 2 years ago and still can’t edit videos I’m useless 🙈I’m doing the NC500 but after watching your travels I’m going to visit the Orkney islands too now. Do you need to pre book the ferry ? I’m travelling in may you’ve got me excited over the islands I love historical buildings and dwellings..
You will love Orkney! So beautiful and interesting. Yes, book the ferry when you know your dates.
Ruth you are just amazing 🎉love watching your videos
Thank you so much!
One of the reasons most of the antiquities are quoted as 5000+/- years old is the Norway trench undersea avalanche some 6000 years ago. A tsunami washed clear lands round the North Sea, and was indicated as the cause of the loss of Dogger Land in the south North sea. There is evidence from the Moray Firth and to the east of sea sediments being brought ashore and pushed inland. So the people for which the antiquities are celebrated where all new settlers as everything before would have been swept away or buried.
Thank you 😊
Oh my Ruth, such a wonderful video. Your videos are a highlight of my week.
Wow, thanks!

Alaska ferry you have to back on. The one leaving Bellingham for a 5 day trip is over 300 feet so you have to reverse a long way, LOL. But you drive off forward. Great video, I've always wanted to go there and the Shetlands too
Oh interesting!
Not sure how you popped up in my algorithm. Mainly follow sailing channels as that is my passion. As it stands I am going to blame or credit Red Seas channel for this happenstance, shout out Red Seas. That said I have thoroughly enjoyed following your videos. They are remarkably well done. Your presentation of and love for Scotland is infectious in the best possible way. Safe travels and look forward to seeing where you go from here.❤
Thank you for such a lovely comment. I really appreciate you watching the videos.
