Is Huacachina, Peru a Tourist Trap or Desert Oasis? // Peru Travel Vlog

  • If you're coming to Peru, you will quickly learn that Huacachina is supposed to be one of the best places to go in Peru. Huacachina, Peru, is described as an incredible desert oasis complete with sand dunes and sandboarding, but is it really all that great or is it a tourist trap? We were skeptical of Huacachina but decided to visit this oasis in the middle of nowhere so we could do an Instagram vs reality travel comparison for you!
    Huacachina, Peru is right next to Ica and can even be accessed by a very long day trip from Lima. During our time in Huacachina, we chose to stay right in the town, although you could also stay in Ica, Peru instead and take a 10 minute taxi ride into Huacachina. This desert oasis is tucked in a valley between huge sand dunes that hide the town unless you view it from the sky (like our lucky drone). The lagoon in the center of the town makes this oasis truly picturesque, but is it anywhere near as good as it looks on Instagram and TikTok?
    The most popular activity to do in Huacachina is sandboarding, and for good reason. The sand dunes are way taller than they first appear, and they make for a wild ride both in the dune buggy and on a sandboard! Mico went as far as to try sand skiing, which turned out to be less like skiing on snow than he thought (you can also try sandboarding on a proper snowboard if you want)!
    We won't ruin the surprise, but at the end of the video we will let you know if we think Huacachina lives up to its reputation of being a beautiful desert oasis getaway, or if it actually kind of sucks.

    Like the both of you, my husband and I weren’t sure what to expect when we went to Huacachina. It’s definitely a tourist town, but the sand buggy ride and sandboarding were amazing! Also terrifying🤣. The sunset was stunning. I’m glad we went! But OMG, the both of you are brave: I would have been scared to venture out so early in the morning because it’s pitch dark outside!

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  Рік тому +1

      We totally agree! Those buggy rides are something else. It really was freaky to go out so early in the morning. It wasn't scary at first, but about 25 minutes up the sand dune we started to get a bit nervous! It sounds like you guys had an awesome time in Huacachina 😊

    Okay YES walking up stand dunes is SO HARD! We tried in Jordan and I thought I’d never make it! Sorry that you got fog instead of a sunrise but glad some of the other things panned out! The buggies look so fun!

    It is winter time in this part of the hemisphere; therefore fog is very common during most of the day. I think that to do the shots they wanted they must have come in the summer, which goes from December to March, approx. Cheers

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  Рік тому +2

      Yes, we agree! It was fun to try it in winter time and learn that it is in fact a bad idea to try to get a clear sunrise shot 😆

    There is a legend in that lagoon that women can swim from one side to the other, but if a man does so, he dies. there are men who tried and drowned that's why they forbid men to enter a lot. supposedly there is a woman who pulls them by the feet halfway

    • @nicoleandmico

    The heavy agriculture in the Ica region dried up the Oasis, so now its kept alive artificially. But it was originally natural.

    I’ve been debating hard if I wanted to squeeze Huacachina into my SA travels and I think you all caused me to check it off my list. It looks neat bc of the dunes but I feel like I’d be bored there on a solo trip

    There's lots of Natural Oasis on the Peruvian coast line, but as usually happens the most visited in the one closer to a big city. That big city is Ica and sadly the thirsty Ica left Huacachina almost dry. If you want to come back and see amazing beautiful natural Oasis near Ica, Paracas and Nazca.

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  Рік тому

      Haha it is a bit wild for sure! If you aren't into the drive, there is the option to just rent a board and sand board down the dunes that surround the oasis. The only trouble is then you have to walk back up the dune every time you go down!

    NO se si me equivoco, pero llegaron con muy poca disposición para disfrutar el viaje, todo lo veían mal, todo no estaba a su estandar, siempre haciendo comparaciones que no venían al caso. Así no se debe viajar, con esa actitud siempre encontraran algo mal y se sentirán estafados. Si no fuera por la adrenalina (lo llamaron de terror) este viaje sería un fracaso. Bueno tienen todo el derecho de criticar, pero como consejo, no es bueno para un viajero.

      Glad you enjoyed! We had such a great time there 😊 From Lima we took a bus to the city of Ica using the bus company PeruBus. The bus took 4 hours and cost about 40 soles per person. Once in Ica you can just get a short 10 minute taxi to Huacachina 🙂 Also we booked the boogy tour with "SandboardingPeru" It can be hard to find on the map but they have an instagram page under the same name and also a website with the same name. Let us know if you have any other questions 👍

    • @nicoleandmico

      No need to get a sand buggy! You can go to the top of the big dunes surrounding the town no problem. Getting a buggy though does get you further out into the desert. Enjoy!
