Megabots' Giant Fighting Robot!

  • We ran into a giant mech at 2015's Maker Faire! Megabots' creators constructed this massive concept robot in hopes of building a league of combat bots for spectators. Their fighting robots would be piloted by teams of drivers, and use massive hand-made paintballs to knock armor and other pieces off of their opponents. We enter the cockpit of this robot and check out its controls!

***** Definitely too slow. I was just clarifying how fast they go.
Side note, every robot I've seen of this size is very slow. The hydraulics that turn them and move the arms are just not responsive enough to ever be fun to watch.

The concept idea is cool. But as a military veteran, may I point out that the pilot should be in front and the gunner in the rear. The reason being that if the gunner is taken out (disabled) then who is going to protect the pilot? With the pilot in front (seeing everything going on) he can relay to the gunner enemy position, he/she also relies on the Gunner's ability to hit enemy targets which in turn may threaten the pilot and/or his/her ability to pilot the M.E.C.H.

      Arne Gentjens
You forget the fact that science fiction has fueled most of our current "standard" items. The flying car is already developed in some form or fashion. The UT (universal translator) is already in use (IM Translator). the tactile screen (first seen in ST TNG) is now standard restaurant equipment. Rocket ships have been used since the 1960's (space exploration to a much lesser degree then the movies but it is real).
The transporter is now being developed. The replicator is on it's way. Warp drive (ST) is being developed and built as I write this comment. The concept of Ion engines have been in use for the las 3 decades (satellites - to position and move them).
Bill Gates was a garage geek. Now I dare you to say that he is a geek. Steve Jobs, created Apple Computers in a garage. I could continue. The nerd in Highschool (if he continues his "nerdiness" is for more capable of making 7 figure plus salaries then the jock.
I am not belittling you. I am just mentioning that these guys may just receive a Military contract one day worth millions (if not billions). Patton used trucks marked "tank" to practice mass armor maneuvers. Patton was the father of the Modern tank Corps. His vision became a Military reality.

Arne Gentjens Speaking of Mechwarrior, the Japanese competitor to this Megabots's last name is Kurata, which isn't far off from Kurita, the house of Draconis Combine!

Bah this oversized lego thing again. They want to make "both" killer death robots and entertainment robots. Even the so called unsafe demo they did with this thing only caused a few dents in a car door.
This is feking robot teddy bear picnics, if it doesn't start spewing flaming thermite and swing giant cutting discs then it may as well go on the disney channel.

feygan Well you start filling out the paper work for giant cutting discs and they will keep working on the robot. I'm pretty sure they will have an arena show up and running long before you got any permits.
But I do a agree that some movie level pyrotechnics would make this 100x more appealing then paintballs, and since the drivers are secure that shit should be fine... well until someone blows up.

Juan Luis Vargas Pareja Microsoft has a Kuratas, they showed it off in Japan for the Windows 8 launch.. because you know... Japan. I would love to see them loan it out to these guys. Microsoft is also where Piranha Games is getting the Mechwarrior license to use for MWO. Some of Piranha's artists have even been doing concept art for Megabots. If the right strings were pulled, I could see this happening. It is not like this would be bad press for any of the parties involved.

I only know who coined the term.
It would depend on your definition of what a robot is to determine who made the first one.

*Sorry, but this is NOT a robot.*
    Definition of Robot:
_A machine capable of carrying out a series of complex actions automatically, especially one programmable by computer._
This so called Giant Fighting Robots' is actually just a piloted fighting vehicle, not much different from a tank.

      ZFilms11
      Mech is a better name.
Even modern jet fighters, with all their gadgetry, such as computer controlled thrust vectoring, weapon guidance systems and so on, aren't called robots.
Come to that, even an un-piloted drone isn't a robot!
It will interesting to see this go up against the Japanese mech ... I don't think this rusty, top heavy heap will last very long ;-)

Honestly pretty disappointed about this. I personally love mechs. Love sci fi in general. But this just seems beyond impractical. I wouldnt pay to see these things fight at this rate, because they wouldn't hit anything. The design is purely video game based and wish they would have started a more practical goal.

    • @Fraggr92
      @Fraggr92 9 років тому +5

Chris B Look at is as a step in the right direction. Before, we didn't have any manned fighting mechs. Now we have these things. Now someone can look at this and develop something better from it, or learn from these guys' mistakes and make something new.

I have a suggestion for a robot design. Make it all opaque and no windows watsoever. And between the little cracks of the robot, install a bunch of cameras all over the place. The driver's inside will have a full view by watching screens that are showing live footage of camera. Much protective and safe.

The execution here is beautiful given the current level of technology these guys are dealing with. I'm trying not to hold this to unrealistic expectations (built from years of sci-fi and gaming) considering this is the earliest iterations of mechs from the general public. Unfortunately those realistic expectations might not be enough to entertain anyone and then the movement dies. In any event I look forward to seeing where this goes, nice work to all involved!

well he was being sarcastic, which doesn't come across in text. but the original point was that this thing is just a big slow unarmored piece of garbage, and a single frag would kill the occupants before they could even aim those potato arms to fire their first miss.
