The Nikon COOLPIX P950 is a beast of a camera on paper - 2000mm zoom, 4K video, and even "pro" features like a mic input and hot shoe mount. In this video, I unbox and take a look at what's included with the P950, give you my initial impressions of the camera, and compare Nikon's newest superzoom to similar cameras from other manufacturers like the Panasonic FZ80 and Canon SX70HS.

thank for this video.. this is amazing
Nop !! It's not just for super zoom. It takes very decent macro. And do wide angle macro, night portraits and many interesting stuff. So putting on an external flash with diffuser is a really big step. You will have to spend much much more for a DSLR with the appropriate lens set matching the features included in this one cam. Sooo I won't be complaining about the price.
did you make a full review?
Does the lens cap have a string to keep it hanging and attached to camera.
Great video btw thank you
Interesting video thanks for that-I’m still using the P900 but like the P950-might upgrade eventually
its well worth! have you upgraded to the p950 by now? Just wondering how youre enjoying it if you did ;D
Yeah still got the P900,waiting for a break financially to buy it!
@@barrygiddey9139 lol i got it about two years ago.
Definitely worth the upgrade. You have much more flexibility, especially for video, which is what i love doing.
Movie Manual mode will allow you to control whatever you want while recording, for example youd be able to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture, or have the camera do that automatically while you use the side dial that comes on the P950 as an exposure dial (if thats what you set it to) and the 4k is pretty crisp as long as you learn to master the cam.
Best of luck and maybe try to list your 900 to eBay and use the funds towards the new camera hahaha either way, i hope you achieve your wish
@@yankyruss7246 yeah my P900 is brand new barely used and I looked after it mate,do they use the same battery the 950-P900?
@@barrygiddey9139 I'm pretty sure I had to change batteries. It's really no big deal, as you can find third-party batteries that work better than the original. That's amazing that your camera is in such pristine condition. use it well!
Watching many videos (like yours) on the 950, I’ve noticed quite a bit of noise from the zoom motor. I have the Sony RX10 mark 4 which is fairly quiet. I wondered how much zoom noise would be picked up even with an external mic?
Less noise with the external mic, and by the wax sync is always better.
Oh, and it's not only 600mm 😊
The Panasonic FZ300 has a similar manual focus rotary dial just like this P950.
Great review. Looking for more zoom over my FZ300, the FZ80 has enough zoom, cheap price, compact size and not very heavy, plus great reviews; but I don’t like the operation of the manual focus override. Tried out the manual focus on the P950 and it seemed to be quick and accurate, plus unlike the FZ80 you don’t have to take your eye off the view finder to use it. Just not sure at this point how much lugging around I want to do with the P950 which to me personally like a brick.
i know Im kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released series online?
@@dominicazariah9092 Nice scam.
On the Micro USB issue, there is a reason for this. Micro USB sockets have lugs that go through a PCB and give them lots of mechanical strength. Most USB-C sockets are surface mounted to the board. There is not yet a reliable source of stronger USB-C sockets for mass production. Also, USB-C needs a chip to negotiate the connection, and that's often unreliable in high current applications unless you use more expensive cables. A lot of Japanese radio equipment has gone from proprietary chargers to Micro USB for the same reasons: high current and mechanical stability.
Appreciate all the info Gordon! I often talk about stuff from purely the consumer perspective so I do love to see a behind the scenes look at the logistics/pros and cons surrounding each choice.
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips I think part of the problem has been Covid. The companies that would have been making stronger USB-C sockets didn't because they had to keep making previous product lines to keep factories going.
Please make a comparison video between Nikon P 950 and canon SX 70
Performance, image and video quality aspects
I actually returned the SX70HS immediately after making my videos on it. Really disappointed with it and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. If you’re looking for a superzoom on a budget the FZ80 by Panasonic would be my recommendation (though I’m hoping they release a new version soon).
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips thanks for your reply.
From your experiences
Which one is better among the 2 I mentioned
In both picture and video quality
Leave everything else like price diff and zoom
@@driveintonaturewithjoy I returned mine and got the p950, glad I did
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips When did the FZ80 debut?
Hi, How can I change the iso in this camera ? Tks
Hi - just sold all my dslr equipt to switch to point and shoot. It's a hobby , not professional. I was all set to purchase the P950 but now am not sure.........I am not interested in the video stuff. But I love macro so I need a good zoom. Any thoughts? Thanks
All I can tell you is don't buy a compact camera. I bought the A1000 and I'm so disapointed with the zoom range. I love the camera and I am learning how to use it well but the zoom range is killer. I don't know what you need the camera for (birding, landscape, etc. etc) but for me I need the zoom. Best of luck to you!
My P900 died a few days ago. It had at least 4 issues overall. First the
tripod head mount thingy broke out. The screw hole was not centered. So
the weight was not balanced. The speaker stopped working earlier on.
The rubber grips started to fall off which would leave a gel like sticky
glue all over my hands. Which seemed to happen right before someone
would want to shake my hand. Then the zoom started to act up and it
would get a lens error message. You can't do anything when this message
comes up except turn the camera off and then on, then off and then on.
Now the zoom won't do anything. The camera will not correct itself.
While I have enjoyed the reach, the reliability issues will lead me to
looking at other brands for replacement. I don't want to spend 800 or
1000 just to have the next camera break in 5 years. I have a camera my
grandfather had during WW2 that still works but the Nikon P900 died
after 5 years.
Not sure why you’re commenting on this video but 5 years for a digital camera really isn’t that bad. Still sucks that yours died. Unfortunately with any camera in this category you kinda get what you pay for - awesome zoom with a very plastic-y/cheap build. [I will say I’ve had the FZ80 for 4 years and no issues so maybe you’re rough on your cameras, you got a bad unit or the P900 was actually poorly designed]
They definitely don’t make cameras like they used to (for better and for worse) but if you want something more durable look at a DSLR for your next camera; though equipping one with a lens that can compare with the P900 could set you back at close to 2x the price of a P900. Best of luck!
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips Some of these issues (speakers, rubber grips and zoom malfunction) could pop up with the P950. I think they put the tripod mount more in the center of the P950. My son has had a Lumix 60x for the same amount of time with no issues at all. I have a D750 and telephoto lenses for animal photography. I used the P900 for collecting fracking air pollution data and something lighter to grab quick. I guess it depends on how much someone wants to invest yearly in a camera. Not including extras, that camera cost me $120. per year. If something like a P1000 only lasts 5 years it increases the yearly cost much more. I have game camera that are left outside that are 12 to 15 years old and they still work. They've been attacked by bears and left in the rain and snow. Maybe this is one reason Nikon isn't doing so good and people seem to be purging their equipment to buy other brands.
@@Dashbshots Hmm ok thanks for clarifying. So far haven't had any quality issues, but this is actually the first Nikon I've owned so nothing really to go by. Seems slightly more rugged than the P900 so I'm hoping they learned from stories like yours and incorporated it into the design of the new camera. All my friends that have Nikon DSLRs have never had any issues so maybe the quality is just an issue with their cheaper CoolPix cameras.
And interesting use of the camera - haven't heard of one being used for that before. Does it work well for that? (collecting fracking air pollution data that is)
question, can i still take pictures
while the camera is charging?
I have a portable battery and I can use the cable but, Is it still usable while charging?
Nope. Unless Nikon pushed a software update this was one of the more annoying things with this camera.
I just bought a small adapter so i can charge it with my USB micro stuff. Not ideal, but i got around it.
Sir, is this camera 📷 good for photography 📸 ?
Nice overview. I have the Panasonic FZ80/82 which has a great zoom range too. It is a fixed screen whereas the Nikon has the flippy but at least the Panasonic has full touchscreen functionality. just don't understand why the Nikon does not have it-a real shame and deal-breaker for me.
Thanks! I can totally understand that about the touchscreen. I have both and the P950 definitely takes better photos and video but it’s infuriating to use a lot of the time. Really hoping LUMIX/Panasonic will release a new updated version of the FZ80 with competitive features even if they have to raise the price to $500.
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips I am hoping that Panasonic will release a successor to the FZ2000/2500 bridge camera with a longer optical zoom (maybe 30x?).
@@koolkutz7 i may be a bit late, but have you ever zoomed out about 1000mm with a p950? if so, how does it compare with the fz2500 at the focal range of 1000mm (even yes using the intellingent zoom)?
im asking cause the fz is known to soften at that length...... trying to see if a 1" sensor would help me or not. with the p950, the lens does not get soft on optical zoom
@@yankyruss7246 I have never used a Nikon P950, only the Panasonic FZ200, FZ330 & FZ82 + Panasonic G80. If you only use the i-zoom a little bit it's not too bad but pretty terrible at full i-zoom, and forget the digital zoom too!
@@koolkutz7 thank you for getting back to me :-)
I understand what youre saying about using only some of the i.zoom.
For me to give up 2000 mm id want at least 1000 lol
Does your lens soften as you zoom around?
I feel like p950 users tend to zoom all the way out, then back to wide end of the lens, then they zoom in and out on something else (pointless), while fz2500 users, barely use zoom, and focus more on close ups.
The p950 looks like ass on the wide end untill you apply a little bit of zoom. But thats when i stop and record the moment.
The p950 looks a lot nicer than what people show with their repetitive zooming in and out lol
But I still feel that if i want better quality and go with a 1" , it will look worse than my 1 2/3" at a longer focal length
my question is that is it a good camera with lens and all stuff as got to know that it has an inbuilt lence
What
@@Schwing27 thats my question about this camera
Is this camera good for macro? I shoot a lot of insects. Thank you!
Nope, not very good for macro. Minimum focus distance is pretty poor. More intended for stuff far away than super close up.
Are you joking me? It has a minimum focus distance of 0.4 of an inch! That’s incredible!
Lol not sure why he said this is not very good for Marco. You can be half an inch away from something and it focuses very good. This is a great camera for macro.
Sir how we find out battery fully charge and battery low..
There’s a simple three bar battery indicator on the screen, but if you’re looking for a battery percentage level you’re out of luck.
Why buy this camera and not a camcorder ? BTW thank you for your vlogs.
Thanks! I’d recommend this over a camcorder for someone that also wanted to take still photos.
how do you like the P950 now?
Well there’s good and bad. The good: no other super zoom cameras have been released by any other company since Nikon released the P950, so this is still the newest camera in its category. The bad? This camera is definitely starting to feel pretty outdated cause of the image processing software advances in smartphones and other cameras.
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips yes...but there is still that zoom. No cell cam is ever going to pack a zoom like that. Or if one does, it won't be a cell phone any more, it will be a Lens with a built-in phone.
The 950 works great but needs a lot of light..
100% agree. Should be the disclaimer on the box of all cameras like this.
Why can’t UA-camrs just stay positive about a product and quit criticizing everything a lot of people love this camera and just because it doesn’t do justice in your book does it mean the camera isn’t good for our people stay positive for once
What did I say that was too negative?
This is digital camera/dslr camera
People complain about the silliest stuff on a camera. Next someone will be mad cause it can't make them a soy latte
"mouse camera"
looks premium, but pics are the opposite :D
I wouldn’t say the opposite. Photos definitely aren’t DSLR quality but I also couldn’t get a DSLR with 1000mm+ of zoom for under $1000.
You can get sharp images. Do you get sharp images everytime? No, you don't. Even a $10,000 camera isn't always perfect.
2016. P900. 2020 P950 . Technology price from 2016 didnt drop a cent. Where is logic in that? The cost of this unlocked version should be the same as it was P900 4 years ago. This is obviously a money grabber. This should not be legal!
Yeah, it’s kinda crazy. Half of me thinks that Nikon priced the P950 this high just to make the P900 look more attractive and clear out the stock and then they’ll drop the price of the P950. However, though the only improvements (from a spec perspective) is the EVF, image processor and new hot shoe mount - Nikon also greatly improved the quality of the body to make it feel more like a DSLR in hand.
Maybe that warrants a $100 price increase but $200?
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips Not to mention shipment cost. lol Pure terrorism
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips are you kidding me? You havent even mentioned the upgrade of shooting in 4k! That was the main reason i upgraded from the p900, altho the lcd went to shit after owning it for a few years.
@@yankyruss7246 Literally the first upgrade I mention at 0:27
@@DigitalTechReviewsTips i meant in this comment section where you mentioned " the only improvements made to the p950" lolol
DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA. NO NIKON EN-EL20 BATTERY AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET. IT SEEMS NIKON DISCONTINUED THIS PRODUCT.
Thanks for the comment/update on this!
I’ll have to take a look into this but honestly wouldn’t be surprised because Nikon, Canon and Panasonic all seem to have abandoned the category of cameras with no new camera hitting market since the P950 in 2020.
Amazon sell the batteries
No USB-C. No touch screen. Need to charge the battery while it’s inside the camera. No thank you. I will _not_ be using this to take my 2000mm zoom photos with flash 😤
Buy an external charger. I do that for all my cameras. I can't limit myself to having only one battery and definitely don't want to leave an expensive camera out to charge for hours where it can be damaged. I buy a pack of batteries plus wall charger and never have to look at the charging port long enough to be able to tell what kind it is.
If you actually want such high focal range then you have to compromise the small inconveniences.
charging using camera It's very bad thing because when the battrey is compltey dead camara wont be turn onn
