- What an astounding surprise I had today when walking through a carnival by the sea here in Bray, Ireland. Set up in a trailer amidst a wagon circle of bouncy castles was the Rock-afire Explosion. I hadn't seen them since the late '80s in West Des Moines, Iowa, and had thought the closest I would ever get was the fine documentary made about them a couple years ago. Needless to say, this was a surprise of the highest order -- like something out of a Ray Bradbury story. Luckily I was armed with my camera and so I want to share the love with all of you. They live! I have seen it with mine own eyes! (listen for the drunk Irishman requesting "Greased Lightning" when they're playing -- priceless!)

And this is a run down show. You should see Aaron Fechter’s show.
That’s because Aaron Fletcher meticulously developed, what was state of the art animatronics for the time. All Chuck E. Cheese’s did was put some basic moving mechanical pieces into stuffed animals. True animatronics is very intricate, down to blinking, face movement, head tilting etc.

You realize that CEC animatronics use the same endoskeletons as the ones from RAE, right? But I get what you mean, it's just that the programming is worse for MMBB.

For those wondering, they’re playing the VERY last showtape made for The Rock A-fire Explosion. Before Chuck E Cheese took over 😭
Nope, they used some of this audio for the last one however. The last showtape only used Rolfe and earl, as the center stage and billy bobs stages were being converted to CEC
@@S.J.C._Entertainment Then again they only used those Rolfe & Earl segments in the out of business hours and was only instructed to use it during business hour if in the emergency situation in which the remodeling of the other two stages are not complete on time. The Rolfe & Earl showtape SPP made are pretty much Rolfe & Earl talking about the upcoming changes and some cyberstar clips getting shown on the TV screens.

This was such a wonderful surprise for me to! Of course, I knew my babies were touring Ireland but I had no idea how they looked or worked. I am so proud of that show and it brings back great memories for me too!

I wish we had these guys instead of chuck's gang... I love how the faces are and how all the characters move so much and almost feel real. I take back what I said about them being creepy, they are AWESOME! Somehow the franchise took a step backwards with chuck e cheese... They don't sound nearly as scripted and generic as chuck e cheese either...

I loved these guys so much. I had a showbiz pizza about 15 min away from my little town. We went there all the time, I was scared to death of Fats too! I remember every time we went one of them was in the process of being fixed or breaking down in the middle of the show. Was still fascinated by them though. I still have the vinyl my parents got me for my 5th birthday. Thnx for letting us know these guys are still "alive!"

I was still a baby when these guys went away so naturally I got introduced to Chuck E Cheese first and was blown away by them! Now as an adult discovering The Rock Afire Explosion I'm obsessed and love them more than the Chuck E Cheese band. My favorite is Beach Bear ♡♡♡

Aqua Diovotic Chuck E. Cheese was made in the late 70's. Showbiz came in the 80's i believe. Sooooooo it's the other way around.
Showbiz pizza bought chuck e cheese and after 1992 converted every location to chuck e cheese and did away with the rock-afire explosion band. Nothing was stolen, they just made some horrible changes after aquiring the chuck e cheese brand. They should have probably kept both brands running if anything cause I like many don't like that rat chuck and his purple friend, but love rock-afire explosion band.

i like that Mitzi's hair is braided, shows that they're being taken care of best they could. this band is definitely one of the better quality ones.

Also, since they used compressed air, a leak in a valve or dirty air cylinder can cause issue's such as hand not moving etc due to poor air flow. Ahh these were the days, no ardrino circuit boards still used a grey box controller to make the lights and air valves work and play music. A lot of the movements were triggered by tones that opened and closed the valves and cylinders by the grey box computer controller.
I can't imagine how blown away I would be to stumble upon this while traveling. WOW! Thanks for sharing.

For anyone looking for a Rock-afire Explosion experience, there are at least two in operation in the eastern US. There is a small museum in Pace, Florida called "Snap's Blast from the Past Museum", it's privately run but open to the public. Just make a reservation ahead of time. Even bigger is "Billy Bob's Super Wonderland" in Barboursville, West Virginia (near Huntington and the KY/OH border). This is as close as you're going to get to a modern Showbiz Pizza experience. I noticed. In England, can't remember where, I saw the show in amazing condition. Clean characters, no dust on the stage, all the lights worked and no damage on the characters. The only difference was Mitzie had on a different outfit. possible because the costume had gotten really nasty.

For those that don't know Arron fector (sp?) Of CEI still refurbishes these rock afire explosion animatronics to this day, he even has one of the originals and has done Ralph the Wolf, Billy Bob, and Fats voices.

It came from Funtime Pizza Circus 1983-1986, 1988-90's.
Interesting, guess that explains how they have some cyberstar segments.
I'm 13, and my brother and sister are in their 30's, and they got to experience the Rock-a-Fire Explosion band at Showbiz.
I grew up in the early '00's/'10's so I grew up on Munch's Make-Believe Band, but I like Rock-a-Fire better.
I wish I could see these guys in person.
