- Comparing the studio grand sounds from Spectrasonics' Keyscape and XLN Audio's Addictive Keys. Both fantastic products but I think I have a favorite.

I apologize for the microphone quality, it's really distorted, I wasn't able to monitor my voice live and I didn't realize I was recording the signal improperly. Thank you for understanding.

thanks for the review. I just got addictive keys and its very good. i think the dynamic range is awesome. I have this software Kawai VPC velocity editor, which works in conjunction with VST's, it allows you to customize your dynamic range for your playing style. Might be worth a look.
Thanks for the tip! I haven't heard of that before
I was a bit late to this video but i am just choosing between Keyscape & AK now and it was a really useful A/B test. Thanks Buddy
I appreciate it! This video seems to get a lot of hate for whatever reason and so thank you for spreading some positivity 🖤
@@VultureCulture I don’t know why, I thought it was informative and had lots of sounds for the viewers to make up there own minds, u have your opinion which people may or may not agree with but that doesn’t make it a bad video, indeed I was watching for 2 reasons one to listen to the sounds my self but secondly to listen to the option of someone who has experience of both prices of software.
wow thanks. Have been struggling with that "jarring velocity" sound in addictive keys. Will try Keyscape!
Glad you enjoyed the comparison!
Keyscape sounds very warm and natural.... nice review, have you tried Ravenscroft 275?
ArgoBeats I haven't yet but I'm going to do a review because there's so much interest for it!
Nice!
Thanks for the comparison. I'm in the market for a piano VST. One suggestion about this video, I'd bring your voice down a little in the mix. In order to hear the music parts comfortably I need to have your voice at a somewhat uncomfortable level.
Thank you for the feedback! It's always difficult to find the right mix of music/to voice, I'm working on getting it perfect!
Already used Addictive Keys for me was always the best, I tested Keyscape and really is very good, but I still prefer AK for several factors and one of them is the Yamaha Upright, exceptional sonority.
Yeah its sick.
thanks for comparison video. What is your opinion about Garriton CFX Concert Grand ? Did you get a chance to try it? I've always had kinda mixing feeling about Addictive products (Keys, Drums, etc). I like the interface and endless tweaking options but never been satisfied with final result. The Keyscape though sounds good out of the box. I don''t know, maybe it's just me...
I haven't yet! Looks great though.
There's different sounds for different people. For me, it's hard to be Addictive Keys if you're only using the grand piano for $75. It sounds really great out of the box, in my opinion. Keyscape sounds great but I don't think it's worth it unless you're planning on integrating into Omnisphere or love the other 20 or so models in there (I'm not a big e-piano guy lol)
I'm not a pianist but keyscape sounds more natural for me. Thx for the review.
Frank You're welcome!
Great video! Keyscape pays more attention to details (pedal etc.) but at a high cost of the price, hardware resources, and stability. Addictive Keys is more stable, quicker and less resource hungry.
Agreed. XLN audio is an amazing company
@@VultureCulture I have I 7 laptop 2017 , 16 gb ram. I cakewalk Sonar pro installed with both Omnisphere & Keyscape installed and I am not satisfied at all with sound loading of the Omni & Keyscape , it takes too long for me. I think for live playing I will go for Addictive Keys.
@@MrGerhow Load times have more to do with your hard disk than your ram or processor. If you store the Keyscape samples on an SSD it should load almost instantly.
What did you do to keyscape to be able to reproduce such velocity? Also to additive keys? Did you edited it? Thanks.
With good composition and mixing. These two don't matter anymore, it'll work well with any projects. Just that Keyscape triggered my option anxiety.
Keyscape sounds better to my ears. Good job with the comparison.
Thank you!
You can use the filter in AK to get a more dynamic sound, so it gets a bit darker sounding when you play softer.
That's a good tip!
Thanks. Great video!
Dank Dakota thank you for watching!
Nice one! And nice to see someone use Reaper :)
REAPER is life. Thanks!
I’m sure you know this but you can adjust Addictive to create a darker warmer tone. I’m not talking about the TONE or TIMBRE knob - you have to go into the settings where the microphones are and you can adjust it there near the top left. I’m not at my Mac now so I am thinking off the top of my head. But you can get rid of a lot of the bright twang.
Nice vid, dude. 👍🏼
I didn't know that, great tip! Thank you!
Vulture Culture aw dude - love exchanging tips. Glad I could point that out. In case you haven’t found out - under EDIT tab look for Vel>sample (it’s directly under the Addictive keys logo in the Centre and between the two “”K”s. Have a play. Tell me what you think
Thanks! But still gonna go for Keyscape :)
You should make a video about that 🙏🏼
I'm currently working on a series about Omnisphere's Hardware Integration and the Korg Prologue, but after that if enough people are interested I would be happy to make one.
I just got AK and it blew my mind how I can almost feel the hammers bouncing off the strings. I'm playing on a Novation Impulse 61
Yeah it really sounds great, honestly the extra compression brings those little details out wonderfully
Free version of Addictive Keys is all I need. I use the Aged Strings setting.
Super great sounding
Love your presentation of both. I actually own Addictive Keys and I was wondering about Keyscape for the additional instruments. After your review I may just pull the trigger on Omnisphere 2 to compliment my piano. What do you suggest? Thanks!!!!!
Omnisphere 2 is a powerhouse synth, a purchase I would buy again in a heartbeat. Keyscape is a great purchase for someone who would be excited to use the electric pianos and clavicords and so forth, but if you're looking for great piano sounds you've already got comparable quality in Addictive Keys.
Hope that helps!
Thank you so much! Thanks for sharing your expertise and gift! 🙏🙏🙏
@@flowmaka You're very welcome!
I don't know much about piano recording or software so if you could explain something to me, that'd be great!
I currently use GarageBand with my Yamaha P115 as a midi controller (I think). I plug in my piano and choose the Steinway voice since that's the only grand piano available on Garageband and I record what I'm playing straight on GarageBand.
My question is, do these two softwares accomplish the same thing? Or can I plug in my mac with these softwares to my keyboard and have the different sounds and voices play straight from my Yamaha?
Khaleesi Hey there! So if I understand you question then yes you would install either Keyscape or Addictive Keys into your VST folder and then be able to use all of the sounds within either plugin in GarageBand. Both also have a stand alone mode.
I was wondering if Addictive Keys is worth to buy since I am between AK and Keyscape at the momment. After watching your video I'd go with Keyscape if I just wanted the best sounding acoustic piano, i guess. lol... Problem is that I have a real Yamaha U3 here on my home studio and that AK Modern Upright is made with that piano. Plus I am investing on mics to record my acoustic piano here and AK has that mic setting simulation that is just awesome. I'll need to buy both of them. First I'll go with AK and then Keyscape. Thanks for this video helped me a lot.
Wilson Santos I'm glad! Good luck!
I've recorded a bunch of songs with addictive keys, and I quite like it, but it never feels like I'm hitting the keys as soft as I would like. Sounds like Keyscape doesn't have that problem, so I just have decide if it's actually with the money for probably a small improvement in my music. Thank you for a very useful video.
I'm glad you found it helpful! Yes Keyscape has massive dynamic range
I did a blind test and imo Addictive Keys sounds better. It handles velocity very nicely and doesn't sound so exaggerated
y would u even sub ? It’s an awesome product!
You are for sure in the minority
Your ears are faulty.
@@paullebon323 Lol yeah, changed my perspective looking back it years later. Keyscape has a much nicer soft tone
Haha I appreciate you updating us on your thoughts
you can add synthogys new grand pianos in the line up.
Addictive keys sounds a little more mix ready but Keyscape could just use a little bit of high shelf and it's perfect.
Yeah I definitely have to shelve up some high end for any of my mixes, but I make pretty aggressive music. I think for jazz, classical, or even a warm, indie, dreampop mix it would work right out of the box.
Vulture Culture agreed, man! That video where a bunch of artists use Keyscape made me drool and really pulled on my heart strings for it!
Great job, by the way. This is the first time I come across your channel and I like how you compared them. I have AK and the cinematic preset in Keyscape is something I'll try to mimic. It would sound great as a filler ending for a metal track!
One of the 'tricks' they used in keyscape for a bunch of the patches is send the aux out through chorus before it hits the reverb. (Benefit of owning Omnisphere is you can see under the hood.) Creates this wide, shimmering reverb that's unreal.
Vulture Culture thanks for the tip! I'm keeping it in the "little secrets" drawer!
I have no keyboard. I am in Spain but I want to go back to Russia. I need a compact instrument. I'm thinking of buying a midi Korg microkey II or Duo Splicing Portable piano. Can it sound like a Grand Piano with Addctive Keys? What keyboard to buy? What do you recommend? Thank you.
Any midi keyboard will do, as it will sound the same. Is portability a big factor for you? If not I would recommend like an Arturia Keylab 49 or 61, you will likely need the extended range in order to sound like you're playing a piano.
I appreciate your loyalty to both products, but for me there is only one stand out winner. That is Keyscape. It sounds like a natural Piano to my ears, and the only thing that could beat it is a REAL Grand Piano.
I happen to have a real grand piano and I'm pretty sure KEYSCAPE beats it out lol.
Now THAT would make for a compelling video. I don't suppose you would be interested in doing that?
djGreenALERT haha I'd actually have to tune the thing.
Ugh. That's a good 3 hour job ain't it.
I am not qualified to do it on my own lol.
Saludos están muy bueno el video Keyscape es lo mejor uso esos dos vst pero keyscape esta mejor
What's the name of that song? Where can I find it? Love it.
Robin Will I actually just wrote it for this video. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent demonstration. One of the best I've seen anywhere! Although I own Addictive Keys, I think I like the more pronounced sound of Keyscape and I think it would be more suitable for recording (mine) as it's sound is more linear. However, for the money Addictive wins hands down. I paid 29 bucks for it download from some web site can't remember where. Keyscape at 379 bucks one has to wonder if it's worth the price difference.
If you're not going to use the other 35 keyboards in KEYSCAPE, then no way. Both products sound phenomenal so $29 for Addictive is awesome.
Yeah, that loading time, and the fact that it takes at least 30GB for the 'lite' install of keyscape is a bit much for me. I hate when plugins take more than like 5 seconds to load, really kind of breaks the flow when you're trying to make stuff. Korg's M1 and Triton plugins also take too long to load in my opinion, I wish they'd fix it. I think I'll be getting the rest of addictive keys packs when it goes on sale (I already have grand piano.)
I have addictive keys is it worth getting keyscape or is addictive keys just fine?
Addictive keys is fine if it suits your needs. If the other pianos and electric pianos are something you could use than Keyscape is amazing.
For me the best piano vst is Imperfect Samples Fazioli. Never found anything that comes close to that sound.
they are nice but they should make a plugin
The addictive keys sounds too bright for my liking, but I’m sure you can get a better sound out of it tweaking the velocity as you said.
With less compression and EQ the Addictive Keys can be warm and dark like Keyscape.
should we have omnisphere to load keyscape ?
It's not necessary but I love using the Keyscape sounds inside of Omnisphere.
Ok , you know keyscape is so expensive. I won’t buy it if it needs omnisphere as well
@@Renaxelo you definitely don't need it, it'll work perfectly without Omnisphere. It's just nice for us Omnisphere users to be able to use Keyscape within Omnisphere and be able to mangle the sounds with synthesis.
Keyscape should've include the Steinway piano too
I love steinway piano very much.
Logic has amazing steinway
Addictive keys or the Bitsonic keyzone classic?
Bitsonic sounds good and will work in a pinch, but Addictive Keys has many more features, especially when it comes to changing out mics and capturing great room tone.
Addictive Keys user here.
The example sounds like the velocity is WAY too high in the Addictive Keys MIDI part. I'm assuming it was just a copy & paste though, so I guess you just need to treat each VSTi differently... makes sense.
I do think that Keyscape has a slight edge; maybe 55/45.
It's possibly a case of: if you're buying at the point of not owning piano software or are wanting to use it live, go Keyscape. If you just want great sounds for recording or already own AK, it's not worth the extra.
Yeah, the Midi velocity is the same, deliberately, to give a 1 to 1 comparison. I agree with you that Keyscape has the edge but only if you don't already own Addictive Keys.
Hi! Thanks for the comparison. Are they the same piano; I mean 2 Yamaha C7?
68caribou No the Addictive Keys Studio Grand samples a Steinway Model D.
Ok. Since we're on the subject, have you listened to Ravenscroft 275 from VI Labs?
68caribou I have not! Is it another piano plugin? If it's cool I'd do a review.
Awesome cant wait to check it out!
where can I get this midi file ? nice tune...
Sorry I don't have the midi file anymore, I made it just to demo the products :(
Glad you liked it though!
For the price if you are only concern of getting a quality piano sound.. addictive keys is the winner. If you want more bells and etc. keyscape is the winner. It also depends what music you play.. they are both good. Its hard to compare lebron and kobe.
Agreed.
Keyscape has a mellower more warm sound. I prefer it over AK because some of the AK lubraries sound like they were recorded with a fucking dynamic mic. Out of the box I'd def say KS, but if you like to fiddle with stuff, definitely AC. I've owned both. Never heard of Keyscape until last year and I picked it up on sale and I've been using AK for about 2. Amazing plugins, but very very different in what they are meant to do imo
It's amazing how diverse they are considering they're more or less aiming at the same target.
I Prefer addictive keys due to it's advanced mixing software and presets. Both are really nice. I have addictive keys.
You having addictive could explain why you prefer it ;)
Well, Keyscape has more lush and brighter with character and emotion for me. Addictive keys have that character too but it lacks the lush and a little bit of emotion. Just my opinion
Ryberg Nikolai Yeah Keyscape has a certain magic to it.
@@ImmaFlyFly Yikes trying way to hard to be that guy not sure whats wrong with you people lol
@@Honking_Goose Seriously
keyscape sounds so much more detailed than addictive keys. keyscape is like 4k when addictive keys is like 720p
No doubt Spectrasonics did an incredible job!
Addictive Keys can be very very cheap. Got the AK Rhodes Mk I instrument for free with my 2i2 interface, and got the other three instruments (Studio Grand/Steinway, Studio Upright, and Electric Grand/Yamaha) for a grand total of $50 on Ebay. Completely legitimate. On top of the massive discount, I think each and every AK instrument sounds fantastic and is hugely customizable. For me, that made it worth it, but I know price alone is not always the best reason to choose one product over another.
I agree. If price is a factor I would go Addictive Keys all day. Spectrasonics is known for never giving discounts, which I respect them for. If you already own Omnisphere or plan to, Keyscape is worth it. Otherwise I would advise people to go with AK.
A Crisp Baja Blast hey bro, I actually own a legit license for Omni purchased of eBay for around $300, and I had a cracked copy of AK a few years ago & fell in love w/ it (Studio Grand/Upright). Even tho I have Spectrasonics license thru Omni decided to spurn Keyscape in favor of a legit AK license. Been looking for a legit copy of AK, & would really appreciate if u sent link to eBay seller w/Addictive Keys hardware.
@@roderickhockaday5715 Looked around eBay but I'm not sure how many of those licences are legit 🤔 They're selling a single AK product for $79 or two for $129 on Sweetwater right now
Vulture Culture yep, I’ve seen several “trio bundles” from unspecified sources but have only see them packaged as duos from legitimate license holders including the aforementioned Sweetwater
Take that back, I just saw JRR Shop w/ a trio bundle, but at 3X the price that the unspecified sellers are offering at

Vulture Culture obrigado. Você responde rápido kkkkkkk
I’d say that if you really don’t want to pay $400 for one sound, go with addictive keys. I recently bought omnisphere, and I really needed a piano vst that wouldn’t cost me near as much as omnisphere. Im extremely happy with studio grand, and im honestly impressed how realistic it sounds, even if it isn’t on the level of keyscape.
Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean it's worse, I really love AK, and a lot of time it's actually a lot quicker to fit into a mix
@@VultureCulture Yeah I agree with that 100%. It’s strange to hear others say you can’t get soft or dark tones with it, I know for sure you can editing the parameters. Though some people just want to have the sound immediately, and I guess that’s understandable. If I’m to be honest they could’ve definitely raised the price to somewhere around $120-170 for each, so the price they offer for the quality is extremely generous of them
I agree! Every sound you could want is very close with AK.
What scale is this in?
I believe c minor, been a bit since I wrote it.
deep voice
+Awesome Project Yes.
the background music is fighting with your voice
I’m using a Roland JV-1080 with 3 SR-JV1080 Expansion boards (Session) (Keyboards 🎹 of the 60s & 70s) & the house collection card) & Free Vst plugins the addictive keys the Vintage Keys by spitfire audio & the Dexed plugin is good enough for me so with my set up it’s doesn’t make sense for me to spend $379 for the software but hands down the Keyscape sounds better & it’s better then the Fender Rhodes V8 plugin
Yeah, you've got a lot of great sounds already - no need to upgrade from that
I wanna get keyscape but its way too large so Addictive keys will have to do
Addictive Keys is amazing. Sometimes I go back to it and think, man it might even sound better than Keyscape. So feel no sense of let down!
What is the song being played? :)
I just improvised some chords and a melody 😊
@@VultureCulture well it sounds amazing.... I wish I could play that! 😁
@@Fuaaaark thank you! I definitely think I drew it in lol
There are many reviews of these on line. To me they are useless without context. What does you (or your client) consider a great piano sound? Eliane Elias, Nat King Cole, Bobby Timmons, Elton John, Billy Joel, Diana Krall, the piano on the Sinatra Capitol recordings, or the latest Tony Bennett? Can you A-B your piano vst in context and get close to whatever you consider your favorite (there is no "best'). It's too bad none of the reviews I've seen show these pianos in different contexts and compare side by side with recordings but I'm assuming there are copyright issues. With either of these and decent ears (and maybe an additional parametric eq) you can achieve very close comparisons. Just watch that cpu usage.
Addictive Keys 2 is the winner. Definitely! The bass and high sounds incredible, realistic!
It's a great product 👍🏻
For Me:
'Keyscape' was softer and a bit more soulful, I do Drill so I want it to be dark and sinister but have a bit of happiness in it, and for me 'Keyscape' nails that objective whereas 'Addictive Keys' just sounds loud, dark and banging. Will be going for Keyscape.
Sorry XLN Audio, but going for Spectrasonic's one, gonna have to save up though.
Great observations

Don’t waste your time. Even if you’re “only 15”, it doesn’t last forever. Keep hustling.
i have the igrand piano app on my ipad and it sounded thesame as well.
Addictive Keys doesn't compare to Keyscape. I have them both and Addictive keys (which was my first VST) doesn't have the dynamic range of Keyscape. Plus, Keyscape has many more instruments. I don't even have Addictive Keys installed anymore. But, full disclosure, Keyscape isn't my main piano library either. That would be Modartt Pianoteq Pro Studio Bundle v7.5.2. Pianoteq Pro has ruined me for sampled piano VSTs.
I'll have to try it out sometime!
I really think Addictive Keys sounds much, much, much better than Keyscape. I'm really confused what some people are hearing, but Addictive Keys just sounds 100 times clearer to me. Everything I try to play with it just works.
Keyscape is very muddy. In fact it's so muddy that a lot of the stuff I usually play sounds like crap. It's completely unusable for me. The other keyboards are nice I guess, but the Grand... sorry, but it sucks for anything but classical music.
zelos666 KEYSCAPE has more low end and is more dynamic, if you increase the velocity curve that should add more bite to it. Addictive Keys is EQ'd with more upper mids in mind, which helps cut through a cluttered mix.
Thanks for the comment and watching!
james keyton yeah Keyscape has some really great warmth to it.
After working with a lot of midi pianos you'll find that there's a lot of thinner sounding piano's out there which are like Addictive Keys. I could buy mainstage for 30 dollars and get a similar sounding piano IMO. However its really rare to get the same body that you do with Keyscape, such a ful natural piano sound.
I agree.
Keyscape is better... But u can achieve amazing sound with addictive keys too!
They're both incredible instruments
Vulture Culture i think so too! Please upload more stuff like this!
I will in the future! I've been busy working on a new album!
You sound like Darth Vader needs to belch. Lucky!
Thanks? Lol
smh i play the 2 product of theses in mainstream daw like ableton fl studio the addictive sounds bad than keyscape but instead i play them in reaper they sounds becomes niceer
*YOU WILL NOT USE THE TERM "CRISP" WHEN TALKING ABOUT AUDIO, UNLESS ITS A PROTOOLS MIX*
Keyscape , the lower keys has too much bass
Keyscape definitely has plenty of bass in the low end, which I do spend a good deal of time scooping out. Addictive keys does have better plug and playability.
Addictive Keys is a monster, is sampled more accurately, and has a better vst engine which allows for crazy modulation of the original samples plus a true to life accurate 3-d modelling of the 7 different mics used to record the samples that you can even manipulate which if you know what you're doing actually does the EQ for you. Keyscape is just more popular right now. Same way people swear by FL Studio even tho Ableton and Logic have clearly passed them.
I think they're both really powerful instruments. I think you're right that on it's own Addictive Keys has massive flexibility and quality. Once you integrate Keyscape into Omnisphere things get pretty incredible however.
AK is too bright. I really prefer dark tones on pianos, so Keyscape wins for me. AK would be fine for happier, upbeat genres or generic pop music.
Thanks for watching and the comment!
You do realize that you can change the tone IN Addictive Keys, as well as adding a filter or EQ after it? The ability to change mics, mic locations, and even combine two or three different ones really changes tone and gives almost endless customizations. I hear the differences in them, but is an upright better than a baby grand better than a Rhodes? They all have their place. The only thing I can say was definitively better in Keyscape was the pedal and damper noise - much more realistic.
@@chrisw1462 But you have to remember, prior to the sound comparison he did between the two, he turned up the pedal noise on Keyscape, and Addictive Keys was left neutral. Not a true comparison. That's like turning up the volume on only one of them and saying whichever is louder is better.
@@Michael_Wehrley Ah! I missed that.. thank you. Of course, the other comparison is price. Keyscape, although I do love the sound of the many different pianos, starts at $400, which I could never afford. You can get three keyboards of your choice from XLN audio (Addictive Keys) for less than half that. If only SpectraSonics would be willing to break up that package a bit to make it more affordable.

Addictive Keys is best!
JR N it's a phenomenal product. Where do you think it beats out Keyscape?
for me in the pianos rhodes and Pianos Upright! The truth that addictive keys i can get pianos to my liking. In my personal I think Addictive Keys is better.
Not to mention $200 cheaper, with the option of $300 cheaper if you just want the Grand and it's variations.
Good video but I would never subscribe to anyone who has “Vulture” & “Culture” as their UA-cam name. Big Ups
It's the name of my band. Glad you liked the video.
*WHY, IS YOUR MIC SO OVER COMPRESSED, DISTORTED AND LOUD???! Did you not do a run and check your levels?*
Jeez man for someone doing music and music production stuff your recorded voice over your mic sucks big time. Sorry just being honest, its cutting like a knife through the nice piano sound when you talk.
WHY ARE YOU YELLING
These 3 chords music are terrible. It would be better with a real pianist.
