I find it annoying when people feel the need to brag about "Oh I already knew how to play this when I was 5." Stop please. And I AM NOT JEALOUS. I find piano prodigies very fascinating and I absolutely love Tiffany Poon but it's just some of these comments irritate me. There are waaaay too many. Just enjoy the music. Stop bragging to the world about learning this when you were 10,11,12,13. What about you or your age makes you any better or worse than Tiffany Poon? It's not your age that defines your skill, but how you interpret the music and play it. Some kids need to stop making it into a competition and learn to appreciate good music.
+Black00xXx00Rose 1 year late, but absolutely agree. This whole competition-like view ruins it completely for me. Wherever you go, you see people talking about how they played it after X year or how hard it is. And then there are those websites rating pieces from "easy" to "expert", like it's some sort of video game similar to guitar hero...
The technical aspect is an important part, but that on its own won't get you far. Not to mention, who knows how well these people played the pieces when they were young? Saying that you played it at age X doesn't have to mean anything, and I'm hoping that the actual prodigies don't go around bragging online about it.

I agree with with you, but I also want to point out that you can't help but be rude when you are completely shocked. Anthony Williams is the rude one by posting this reply to a comment that tells people not to say that they 'played this when they were young'. Also, Anthony Williams goes further and says that he did it at 6 better than the amazing lady in the video (huh? not even if you are prodigy - Haydn's compositions need a kind of maturity to execute and a 6 yr old is far away from that). He also claims he improved on the original piece. This is where I get baffled. A 6 yr old 'improving' on a piece full of sublimities composed by the classical master. I can imagine how he improved it, most probably by smoothing out Haydn, and completely substituting the musically difficult passages (hint: there are quite a few). A 6 yr old's perspective is so limited - he wouldn't appreciate complex flavours, impressionist paintings, and philosophical literature. He wouldn't appreciate Haydn.
Just starting to learn this - at age 73. Finding it difficult even on the first page!

What a difference between this early (good) Haydn interpretation and how Tiffany plays Haydn today (Excellent, October 2019). She is at her best with romantic repertoire, excels with Chopin, as the rest of this 2012 recital shows. But she has worked hard on her Haydn and Scarlatti, and the improvement is notable.
I usually don't like Haydn's music but this Sonata and this interpretation is like an arrow in my heart ! I could listen to it forever! There is so much liveliness in it.
To my mind, this is a beautiful, compelling, mature and insightful performance. I say "to my mind" because what I hear and feel when I listen to this is different from what others experience. More to the point, while all music is experienced subjectively, playing a piece of music at ages 10, 11 or 12 (as discussed below), when one is still a child, is (and should be) completely different from performing a piece of music when one has lived and experienced the joys and sorrows of life by age 50, 55 or 60 or later. That is when, hopefully, wisdom and insight help fuel the reading of the score and a more meaningful interpretation is performed.
Please, this sonata it’s very beautiful. Stop saying things like: I’m a fetus and I can play this sonata.

Haydn's sonatas are full of masterpieces and are peerless. I believe the reason why they are so great is because Haydn himself played keyboard and has written to his own ability.
Guys. Even a 5-year-old boy might play this song. But those young lack understandings about the key changes and specific skills required in this piece. Music pieces that look so easy have all of their difficulties that even the pianists may consider them hard. So PLEASE do not brag that you play the music at your young age, being so proud of yourself.
I agree with you, except this is not a song. It is a piano sonata.
The only person who ever played this sonata that young or younger was Ilana Vered from modern day Israel, who actually was able to play it at age 3.
They Haydn piano sonatas may not be the most exciting things Papa Haydn wrote, but his genius manages to shine through. Tiffany pays particular attention to avoid playing the Haydn as mature Mozart sonatas. Clear, well tempered, clean phrasing, relaxing.
I still find it more enjoy able then Mozart. I know he was a prodigy and all but his music makes me fall asleep

Tiffany, I am following you. It's Haydn's birthday so I'm cycling backwards through the sonatas and came to you playing this one. I believe you have this one down perfectly, so calm and steady, light and crisp and letting the music sing through every phrase just so - sound music from a sane mind, that's Haydn's genius. Hey, those who think this is easy, just try and get the interpretation as balanced as Tiffany has it. Not so easy, believe me. It requires unquestioning acceptance of every phrase. Excellent! This is not a very complicated sonata, Haydn was not a piano virtuoso.... but all these people Who say that can play It and they are 11,12 or 13... can they really say they play It by heart, clearly differentiating the phrases from the rest, with the right dynamics and expresion, phrasing, pedal control, clear Melody?... Knowing a piano piece doesnt mean playing all the notes correctly and quickly... A talented kid can do this, but that doesnt mean that he or she can express what the music contains, he/she is only like a music box, and this is not what this girl is doing. She is interpreting the music, not pressing the right Keys. Its not that easy... Playing the piano shouldnt be an athletic competition. Young players think that knowing a piano piece means playing the right keys, and do It quickly. They dont understand their mistake, somebody should tell them what playing the piano really means ( Sorry for my bad English)
@@stepatatime5388 Sure, but in every art there's something that only the years of experience make you understand what I mean. An 11year-old child may probably play this sonata fantastically but, in some years in the future you'll understand what I mean, its a question of how old you are to understand the point, and cannot be explained until you get older. In ten years or so you'll get my comment. It's not a question of talented people, its a question of experience, and only the years can give It to you.
I sometimes agree with it, but you may be prejudiced towards the young pianists. There are thousands of kids who can express the true music of Haydn and other composers very well. And there is really something that kids can express rather than as an adult, like the brightness of Haydn.
@@isabellllee Are you really sure a 12 year old pianist can "express" all the complexity of a Beethoven's sonata? Or express all the nuances implicit in a Chopin's piece? I think they dont. It's similar to Literature. No kid can express in a novel or, better, a poem all the experiences, sensations, deceptions ,etc that only the years can bring to you. Poetry is similar to music, an art of emotions and experiences, and a child hasnt lived enough years to have enough experiences of Life. He/she is not mature enough. That's all. It has nothing to do with talent. Picasso was an excellent painter as a child but he created Cubism when he was an adult. That's the point. Children may be talented and fantastic players but they are children after all. We should ask Baremboin's opinion about this topic, since he was a child prodigy. Step at a Time I’m 11 and I play the Turkish march by Mozart, it’s such a great piece, gives my heart a nice warm feeling and makes me smile 😊 then I close my eyes and lose myself in the music and play it the way through😊🤓
Though I may be 12 I feel like I can play with heart the best. People always say my best quality or talent in piano is my stage presence and feeling towards the piece that I’m playing. They also say that I make very good faces and my mom always says that I should play like somebody in the audience may be deaf and I agree. She said that I should play with emotions like someone deaf is watching so they can understand the emotions. ❤️
I always love what you do. Here, I like that you take a slower tempo then I am normally used it. I have been looking for a slower performance and here it is. I like it so it breaths more. Thank you!

@@yejohn8162 it went well! I graduated with my degree. One thing I learned is that a piece is never done. When you first learn them, like I was doing for this piece 4 years ago, it was my first attempt. Solidifying and memorizing notes, phrases, rhythm, etc.
Those first two months of finishing and memorizing the music is only the beginning-you have to drop stuff for a while, come back with a fresh mind, and suddenly the piece comes alive again in new way. What I’ve found works best for me, is always going back to a piece after letting it sit for a while. That’s 100% more effective than sitting at the piano until your brain dead and can’t feel your fingers anymore; wondering why you can’t get it right.

I think it’s interesting to see other people’s interpretations of the same piece, I played this at one point and my interpretation was much more agitated and contrasted, like how you might play Beethoven. I like this interpretation though, you can really tell the emotion.
Same, my interpretation of this piece when I was younger was agitated and contrasted, like how one might play Beethoven as you mentioned. I really appreciate Tiffany Poon's interpretation, the emotion and phrasing is beautiful. I am now in my thirties and revisiting this piece.
Any faster than this would lose something in the music. Other very polished, musical accounts are available, but something is lost at a faster tempo. Thank you Tiffany.
After writing this, I found a UA-cam with Sokolov playing it. He plays it far too fast! I know you are a fan of Sokolov and I first noticed him when I heard a recital on the radio when he was playing Haydn. Obviously, I would guess that you could play it at Sokolov's tempo, but please do not. Your tempo is plenty fast enough and allows for phrasing and articulation that is not possible at a very fast tempo. Yes, I know the score is marked presto, but your tempo is certainly faster than allegro.
I am listening to Sokolov's version as I write this: he plays the other movements exquisitely.

This is brilliant! I love her playing. I am currently learning this song, and is just about finished learning it. I really want to speed it up but I'm having a bit of trouble playing the octaves up to speed since my hands are kinda small, and my fingers are not very flexible even though I have been playing piano for 6 years since i was 9.
Junyi Desu I like to play Hanon all the time as a fun exercise that also really helps to warm up. If you practice stretching techniques and songs that are made to stretch your hand and fingers then you could probably improve a lot :D
There is always the option to roll the octaves or play the bottom or top note. Don't stretch to hard tho

I love this Sonata so much! Such a delightful piece of music!
Hand and arm movements are incredibly beautiful, the tone is excellent and basically everything about this performance is superb!
I also like how this performance is slightly slower than other performances out there...even though it's slower, to me it feels like it's just the right speed (others, though also great, feel a bit rushed...)
