Gonzalo for his playing is the best at the moment...Never have seen another at live performances who has been more attentive with his playing. Loves what he does in life. He is just there...at the moment in music....
gonazlo has great phrasing, but its really hard not be astounded by joschos incredible technique, even blazing through runs at 200 bpm he never misses a note, and thats on an acoustic, just extraordinary
Joscho is incredibly precise. He will eventually get to express more soul in the future, I'm sure. He's so talented and you casn tell that he plays a lot everyday. Give Joscho time and he'll show us some great things.
Great video! And, by the way, there is a bass player. He is improvising from bar to bar, melting all the chords together, keeping steady rhythm and groove, pushing the guitars to a higher level. Where would they be without him? It is the three of them together that brings the excitement (imho as a bassplayer).
Gonzalo is more into emotion than Joscho for me who's more into performance. But this is a very subjective point of view. This is just how I'm feeling it.
This Duell reveals much non spoken communication. Joscho robbing the first solo from Gonzalo. Gonzalos face is hilarious. I don't share the opinions of some commentators here, who say the one is superior over the other. Joscho has much self confidence and fun playing with high quality musicians. Pre-Learned-Licks is right somehow, but both Players use them. I think when u want to Play with a higher degree of refinement, u have to rely on pre learned "licks" or structures. But both use These learned structures in a free, dynamic and joyful way.
Agreed! They're both great players don't get me wrong. But Gonzalo's style appeals more to me also. He's really trying to feel out the song when he's playing and not just doing blazing fast tricks over it.
Two very different players, and there is room for both of them in this wonderful music . . . Sure, Joscho is a master technician and heavy on the pyrotechnics, and he takes a lot of flak for that. "Not enough expressive melody." BTW, they said the same thing about Paganini. I think his playing gets more soulful and artistic every year. Gonzalo is all soulful artist and would never dream of playing a lot of hot licks just for the sake of hotness -- Its not his temperament. to each his own
Totally agree. I listened to many great gypsy players before and, quite frankly, when I first read the name Joscho Stephan a couple of years ago I thought he must be a wannabe (says a German about another German). Somebody who didn't grow up in a gypsy community could never play like this. That being said I finally listened to him for the first time only a couple of weeks ago and my mind changed completely. He's the most complete gypsy style player I ever saw. His technique is beyond compare and that makes people nervous and envious, but it isn't Joscho's fault. He practiced for almost three decades (including the classical guitar) to reach this extremely high skill level, so why should he play at a lesser level? Not enough soul? Not enough emotions? Is there a "soul-o-meter"? All there is is personal taste and preference. Virtuosity is not a bad thing and Joscho is a virtuoso. I could listen to him all day through and wouldn't get bored, but that goes for guys like Stochelo Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Gonzalo Bergara and a couple of others, too. There's no point comparing guitarists the way it happens on YT where it's only about up- or downvoting them. They all developped their own style and that's how it should be. If that wasn't the case I wouldn't enjoy listening to this music anymore. Like I said, it's all a matter of personal taste and that's also the way it should be. Like you said, there's enough room for all of them.
To all those guys who admire Josho for playing thousand notes per second - music is not about playing pre - learned light speed licks, it's a feel that it's projected from the heart - it's called swing. So Josho unfortunatelly shows how gypsy jazz and the music should not be played. 😮
+Sony Reinhardt restons polie SVP.
Joscho is a great player for sure, but his melodic lines and hooks consist of virtuoso, scale like patterns. I like Gonzalo's phrasing a lot; he's very artistic and easy on the ears.
if you really understand swing and the implications of it to improvisation then you'd see that at several points Gonazalo knods to the bass player to take a solo but Joscho is so self involved that he doesn't see it. Gonzalo builds his solos from pure musical structure and feel in equal measure. Joscho is all about pre-learnt licks being put together in different orders. German efficiency for you!! Gonzalo is the only one who really swings. BUT Gonzalo doesn't need to prove anything he is humble to the beat. Musically, it's Gonzalo i'd keep watchin! Joscho WILL run out of ideas soon. Gonzalo lets the rhythm tell him what to play!
Aaron Walker thanks for your very good comment Aaron. It's like in wine Bordeaux vs Burgundy......I like them both for different reason. Also people should not be judging musiciens on one or two videos. Musicalement, patrus
I wouldn't count Joscho Stephan out quite yet. As far as piano players go, Fats Waller and Art Tatum played loads of pre-learnt licks but they eventually learnt to understand rhythm musically and stayed loyal to it. I don't want to say that Bergara is definitely the most musical of the two, but I will say that he played the most tastefully I think, which is an assessment purely based on style and player preference. I also don't want to say that Joscho has no musicality at all because he was responding to Bergara as much as the next guy, and perhaps visibly enjoying his playing the most out of the three. It's like +Aaron Walker said, they're two fantastic musicians that just like to speak differently.
yeah Gonzalo is perhaps a bit more from the traditional vein in terms of how his ideas flow from the beat. I actually really like Joscho's playing. Maybe I just identify with Gionzalo's playing. I do love the huge bends that Joscho does!! Really cool!!
the josho is new evolution on the jaz color tone technic tremolo.and is i think very power energy on his style..the manush is great.i think com from hildesheim plaso ...i whas in this time by friend with adeli..what is beatifull is that reality..the teacher whas from him the onkel...i dont know now sorry...can mistake..what is reality the man n is bombastiko player and the world jazz need him to the story book off this beatifull musicmann.hi is new evolution on the dcango jazz....sorry for my comment...me andy fernando berki .guitarist....and ...basisst ....piano player composnist and studio master record...in my free time hobby .....chvale manouche the god bleess amen savoore...chave..
I would suggest that the Gypsy Jazz has a rock kind of attitude and feel. I have heard some accomplished jazzers attempting Gypsy Jazz but they just aint got it. Too soft.
As much as I admire Joscho, he really does hog the solos in this rendition, and he keeps changing the rhythmic variations on Gonzalo. Just look at Gonzalo's face at 39! Great playing, but it would have been nicer if Joscho kept his rhythms straighter like Gonzalo.
Down vote me all you want, but I think what everyone really wants to say is that they don't really mind that Joscho loves to exhibit his virtuosity, it's that he chooses to play fairly bland scalar ideas in the meanwhile. Don't shoot me.

Musicalement, patrus
Gonzalo for his playing is the best at the moment...Never have seen another at live performances who has been more attentive with his playing. Loves what he does in life. He is just there...at the moment in music....
that shirt though... somehow says it all about joscho.
he was in the US to long that time :)
This is the best comment I’ve ever read on any Gypsy jazz video ever. Bless you
Gonzalo's tone is amazing
And Joscho's technique is amazing
2 amazing player for sure! Musicalement, patrus
gonazlo has great phrasing, but its really hard not be astounded by joschos incredible technique, even blazing through runs at 200 bpm he never misses a note, and thats on an acoustic, just extraordinary
Jack Reilly I was with Joscho when you comment! Musicalement, patrus
Jack Reilly
Scoredog your a tempo
Jack Reilly during Django in June last month I often suggest Joscho to play faster!
Scoredog
actually about 220 to 225
Those bends are like a haunting human voice, so unreal!!
Joscho is incredibly precise. He will eventually get to express more soul in the future, I'm sure. He's so talented and you casn tell that he plays a lot everyday. Give Joscho time and he'll show us some great things.
Wow,incredible!!! Gonzalo is the man!!!... The perfect mixture of soul and technique in my opinion.
They should do a tour together and call it the Yin Yang tour.
The Joy of Music
Great video! And, by the way, there is a bass player. He is improvising from bar to bar, melting all the chords together, keeping steady rhythm and groove, pushing the guitars to a higher level. Beautiful guitar music!

nice one
Quel bonheur de vous entendre !!! mille mercis
+claude noterman des grands musiciens! Musicalement, patrus
awesome!!
greatings... both fantastic players!!
wonderful play by joscho stephan.... BRAVO....
One of the most pleasant duo execution of this track. Maybe Django Reinhardt would have preferred the Gonzalo part.
Gonzalo is more into emotion than Joscho for me who's more into performance. But this is a very subjective point of view. This is just how I'm feeling it.
While this is possibly true, I don’t think anyone would argue that Django was at least as much of a show off as Joscho 😂
Grandes!!!
Bravo!
Great playing guys. Gonzalo just keeps getting better. Man, I'm gonna have to keep practicing,. Ive always loved this Django song.
what a great documentation for teaching children how to play musical and just the opposite!
Wonderful playing by both greats, and both great guys. Bravo my friends!!
Dude, you deserve the nobel prize ;-) Sante Patrus
Wow!! Puissant et surtout très inspirant!
Holy Smokes! What a great mix of musicians! Thanks Patrus53.
Joscho is amazing on technique and virtuosity, sure. But for me in terms of musicality, Gonzalo has more to say.
This Duell reveals much non spoken communication. Joscho robbing the first solo from Gonzalo. Gonzalos face is hilarious. Thanks Patrus! I've been waiting to hear these two together for quite a bit
Great swing, beautyfull sentences...I do love it. Thanks +++ #loovince
Joscho's not feeling those bass solos haha. He steps in every time.

@patrus53 let's get some interviews of joscho stephan up!
gonzalo gonzalo!
Agreed! They're both great players don't get me wrong. But Gonzalo's style appeals more to me also. He's really trying to feel out the song when he's playing and not just doing blazing fast tricks over it.
The final theme is Canon of Jacques Montagne?
+Lancelot De Avalon You are right. Musicalement, patrus

Fabulous, thanks Patrus :)
love gypsy jazz :)
Joscho Stephan is a genius without the weird bits.
So funny video. To watch their faces and reactions :))
Mmmm i think i know what you mean but thats not him struggling, he has a really special a sound he has created, i find it really refreshing.
i like gonzalo soo much! :D

😮
Enough to make anyone sick, sick with joy and happiness. When the top players play the top players play😂😂😂
Am I right when I say I hear some rock n roll in his playing?
+Patsik for sure!
+Sony Reinhardt restons polie SVP.
correct although in this particular trio he plays better than usual because he's a bit more free
Joscho is a great player for sure, but his melodic lines and hooks consist of virtuoso, scale like patterns. I like Gonzalo's phrasing a lot; he's very artistic and easy on the ears.
Amazing tone… is it amplified or simply the acoustic tone of Gonzalo’s guitar?
Joscho is next level. His vibrato and string bending is masterful.
and Mr. Grappelli ?
joscho is such a ham lol
+patrus53. Muchas gracias
Djangology by Mr. Reinhardt
Both phenomenal players. Different styles. I actually prefer Gonzalo’s touch a bit more here.
3:20 Gonzalo: Slow down, mate :D Amazing performance !!
gonzalo n1, that's it!
Gonzalo believe number #1 is Django
Gonzalo's solo is better to hear..
both superb
oh of course yes!! i love joscho's playing so much too and i am a fan of him. but in this video, gonzalo was just playing with more feeling and taste.
very true...Joscho is not that great at all....I told him last time we met.

very much agree

caranauba believe me. He is not struggling.
Gonzalo hates it..... trust me.
+Kevin Nolan i really hope that's true
+Darío Goya I dont think so at all. Musicalement, patrus
don't ruin the fun patrus
Josh is just about the licks... tasteless playing. hurting my ears...
