  • A recent UK investigation has called for an overhaul of religious education suggesting it be replaced with a new subject covering religion and beliefs and values.
But with so many different cultures and views to consider, who decides what should be taught and how?

Religion should not be taught as truth but as a philosophy and personal choice. Also humanity is very diverse and there are too many nasty views in the main religious texts for it to be taught safely unless you are keen on having a sanctioned "permission " to hate others. I think it is important for people to realise that they have moral views already without having to look to another, or an ancient text for guidance. Kids are smart. Keep the churches away from them.

Why are schools still teaching children about sky fairies??? Like no. You could spend that time on maths, science, art or whatever actually contributes to society.

My school taught me about religion when I was in grade 4 and 5. I am now grade 8.

Religion should be taught in schools
I strongly agree with this statement and there are many reasons for that. First of all, every religion teaches us the same thing humanity, to be patient, to be thankful and to be merciful towards other people etc. Possessing these moral qualities human could prevent many problems such as racism, violence, hate crimes and so on. Such well-known philosophies and thoughts as Abu Nasyr Al Farabi and Abay spoke about the primacy of the foundations of religious education over secular.
A person can be highly professional and educated, which can lead to the appearance of dangerous weapons that can be used for his own selfish purposes. The lack of elementary knowledge about religion is that a person becomes his side on the part of destructive religious cults for him. Whereas a religious person uses his knowledge for the benefit of society, the principles of God-fearing and humanity, as well as the main pillars and principles of religion, are laid in him.Studying religion shouldn’t be the study of a series of isolated facts, but sometimes some very basic knowledge offers perspective and opens up a whole new world that they hitherto didn’t have a chance to know about. For example, most students, no matter what the age, predict that the majority of the world is Christian . It’s very interesting to them and exciting to uncover a more realistic perspective about the world. Comparing and contrasting religions offers enormous opportunities to not only see fundamental differences but also similarities, which students can analyze and draw conclusions about. They see, live with, see others live with, and wonder about far more than we can imagine not to mention what is experienced via television, internet, and music. If we don’t provide a safe environment to learn to make sense of the world, we end up with kids who don’t have the tools to cope, who suppress and ignore or react, or who follow their parents lead, never quite knowing how to process and develop their own views. Making religion an integral part of our curriculum may not be easy, but it is certainly legal and well worth the effort if we want to help our kids become independent tolerant critical thinkers who seek to understand and improve themselves and the world in which we live.

Independent? Tolerant? By telling them religious fairy tales in ages, where they dont even understand what religion truly is? Thats basically mental abuse. We saw it just recently in france how peaceful it can be. You dont need religion at all to become a tolerant thinker creator.

In my country religion instills violence. There was a 30 year long civil-war which killed thousands of people, and its close to starting again.

Religion teaches the opposite of all of that really it teaches you hate everyone that isn’t you your not good enough it gives a false sense or self righteousness over things that contradict themselves. They ignore history to fit their narrative

Firstly, saying it should be taught in schools is too broad. What ages are we referring to? Should children of all ages be given the option to learn about different religions and their tenets and practices. I think at an elementary level the basics of philosophy and critical thinking should be taught before teaching the philosophy of religion. Children should be properly equipped with the tools to discern rationality before feeding their curiosity on any one religion. Not to mention, I dnt believe all children need to know about religion to be prepared to join society. Public schools because of their scope should focus on preparing children for work and survival on their own. The exploration of ideas should be a subject within university studies when the mind has had sufficient time to mature.

While I agree religion should only be taught as examples of ancient and modern mythology, it is assemblies with ministers, hymns and prayers that is the major problem, it excludes not only atheist children, but also any who are in minority religions, I don't want my child brainwashed by that nonsense, but I also don't want him separated from his peers and made to work or do nothing while they get a break. Hopefully though with his parents guidance he will have the critical thinking skills to know delusional thinking when he hears it!

I’m atheist, but I hide it because if they found out I’d have to go to a school so far away that it would take like an hour to get there. And it would be a normal school, not a grammar school. And I’d have to wake up at 6am.

There ARE no Atheist children. There ARE no Religious children. There are only brainwashed children. NO religion or anti-religion should be 'taught' to them before the legal age that they can either learn to drive , have sex, get married, drink alcohol etc. THE worst thing about religion, to me, is that the innocents have no say in what they are being fed to them, and I seriously believe that this should be criminally prosecuted.

Gov't has no business invovinging itself in the business of religion. Stay the fuck out of it and be neutral on the very subject of religion. THAT is the solution.

I very much agree that religious education is necessary, but it needs to be taught in an extremely respectful, informative way. Children need to grow up knowing and understanding different ways of thinking, not only to empower their own choices but to foster respect for others no matter what religion they follow. Religion is steeped in history, local and family traditions, and such teaching would not dilute religion, but surely help to combat the ignorance that is often the root of conflict in our society.

@@lucyroncato5778 What is needed is a more critical and confrontational approach to teaching about religion, not to placate it. Especially for those who have suffered under a religious upbringing. Religion falls under the category of ideas and no idea, religious or otherwise, has specially immunity from criticism. Respect people?, yes but I do not have to respect the things they believe if those things are false, harmful or divisive.
