  • It's been a wild few months.... I put my camera down and just focused on surfing and editing. There's been so much going on I hadn't filled anyone in on (partly cause I couldn't talk about it at the time), and also stuff going on for me personally. Here's an action edit that needs no special editing... just pure fun cut to some music. THEN we dive into some talk story on life... though at the time of posting this I feel like there's even more to share and say! But... that'll be for another time.
    Enjoy!

    MAN IT WAS FUN EDITING JUST ACTION! Sorry it’s been sporadic on the content front the last 6 months. More content coming, and more details as well. For now… I appreciate all y’all and hope you enjoyed the surf action!

      hey Brett, hoping you can help. I'm a subscriber to your channel, I have an Oneill Hyperfreak 2mm springy which is the most flexible and warm (for its thickness) wetsuit I've ever had. I've had it for a year or 2. Based upon that, and what I read online, I just bought myself a new psycho tech fire 3/2mm steamer for winter. It arrived in the post, and I'm really disappointed. I havent worn it surfing yet, but I tried it on at home and its very stiff - nowhere near the flexibility of the hyperfreak. It genuinely feels like an old steamer from the 1990's. Oneill describe it online as the most flexible and warm suit in their range, but its anything but flexible. I wanted to know how you find them and which wetsuit you wear. I know its colder where you are (I'm in Queensland, Australia), but do you wear the psycho tech / hyperfreak? The reason I'm asking you is Oneill have no stores in Australia anymore, and no number to call. All I can do is email back and forth with a customer service team in Asia.

    As an older dude who has worked his whole life to make money and just find time to enjoy life, I would look at what you do and think "this dude has it figured out and is LIVING the life" but as with anything, there is the grind and the reality of making it all come together. Unloading on how it's all going is the right way to do it. Keep doing what you are doing to take care of your family and your own health. Will be moving to the banks in the next year or two (full time) and looking forward to watching you hit those lighthouse swells some time!

    Brett, hey glad the ear is doing better. I'm a 61 yr old guy that's followed you for about 4 yrs now. I enjoy your vids and content. Me and the wife are on a trip to Ocracoke for a family wedding and are on the ferry right now. I understand what your saying about getting stagnant in life. It happens. If I remember JOB went through a similar thing not long ago were he had to cut down on his videos. But it sounds like your on the right track to find balance. Life is all about having balance. Your fine man. Just keep moving forward and good things will happen. Look forward to more content and some awesome surfing from you. My personal opinion is the sponsors should jump on you. Why because your different from the others. In a good way. Your a breath of fresh air really and a great surfer. Chin up and clean that desk lol. Oh BTW alot of cats on your block lol. Take care and God Bless. :)

    You are on the right track with quality over quantity. There's no point burning yourself out. Social media has a way of putting unrealistic pressure on people. From the viewer's perspective, each video becomes more valuable if they are a bit less frequent (viewers are time constrained also). Your videos are an amazing window into the surf world of the OBX, the quality is unreal, so thanks for making them!
    In terms of content, the board review analysis stuff is awesome (I've gotten into shaping my own boards, so it is exciting to hear views on boards from pros). Your technical commentary on waves, and your approach to riding them is also always interesting. Your work in the maps to nowhere series has been unbelievable also. Thanks for all of this!

    Takes some courage to open up to 55k people, love the transparency and appreciate the honesty. As a Christian and a surfer from NJ, I've always found there was something special about your content. Keep it up man, and maybe take some encouragement from Psalm 37: 23-24. "The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand."

    Loved the the video Brett, and I think that’s really awesome you opening up man. Not everyone can do that, and do it so humbly, confident, and organized as you did! And it is good to get it out, you have to. Just remember those times when you feel like the world is coming down, think of all the people who love you, look up to you and think you are a great person. You’re an old wise soul, I ve been thru some real bad shit my lifetime, addiction, homelessness, etc, all that exciting stuff lol, and I remember what it’s like just to want to have a listening ear. I started meditating and getting more spiritual, huge help.. My son and I watch ya and we love ya. Keep being you bro!! Much Love🤘🏻🤘🏻💯💯🌍💯

    Looking at the most popular surf content creators out there, they have one or all three of the following in addition to solid editing, and that's big name recognition, diversity in spots filmed, and/or a general bigger audience base to pull interest from. Being an NC surfer who travels very little, it's very easy for every video to have the same vibe, and while there's an audience that enjoys seeing NC surf over and over, it sadly doesn't have the allure of a Hawaiian or Cali based content creator has at their disposal.

    Man I absolutely love your videos! Something that would help I think would be getting a new GoPro with the stabilization feature so that those pov barrel shots look just as good as JOB or Nathan Florence! I feel like you get tubes that are nearly if not just as gnarly as them but it always looks so shaky. Love what you do keep it up!!

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  Рік тому

      well all the RAW Pov clips I've been posting are from 3+ years ago... this is prior to the stabilization being what it is now. so its apples to oranges.
      The GoPro clips in this were shot with a Hero 9... I don't like the stabilization because it crops the tube... Jamie and Nate get WAY deeper than their GoPro makes them look but the stabilization messes up the end result cause of it.
      -
      definitely give and take... if you're posting more slow motion stuff, you don't see the shake... more real time you see it

    You probably don't give yourself enough credit for what you have created. You have also chosen to do it in a wholesome way which has some limitations too. So that takes up the degree of difficulty. Not to mention you are doing the editing and music and the surfing yourself. It is a lot. I'm sure CMM have also given a lot, and Jeffrey too. Sometimes taking a step back to appreciate and celebrate what you all have done is a good thing. Your product is so good you could do a couple of shortcuts. Have you considered re-using the music... I wouldn't notice if you had music from 4 videos ago play again... most of us only watch the videos once while you probably see them 50-100 times creating them. We are not that smart... just reuse some of those jams and we will think it is awesome! You are doing great! Keep up the good work.

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  Рік тому

      that really means a lot and is a good perspective... I think because it's a never ending task, and always onto the next video, I rarely pause and look back. I do have times where I kinda scan old stuff and see how far we've come, but not like you're saying. I appreciate the encouragement... and ive thought about the music thing. but im so OCD... that be a hard one.
      I think more raw short form stuff. and saving music for the best, will make things easier going forward.

    Love your vids. From the outside looking in you are too close to your editing work. The business either runs you or you run the business. I was actually thinking about how good the music in your videos is. You can tell you take time sourcing it. Bro, I live up in Carova full time. I say keep going but keep your vids more OBX centric. Whenever I see a video that is about you off the OBX I'm just not as interested. You're status as a renown. top level OBX local surfer is where your value is. It's more special than you think. Get out of Hatteras every once and a while and rep the whole OBX. I realize that the best surfing is there but people outside the OBX LOVE all things OBX. Look how popular that stupid Outer Banks show is. lol Maybe go visit some boat builders on Wanchese, hit the 4x4 area off season, cover a couple local events. As you get older you could easily transition into some of that and people will love it. You obviously have a great eye for production don't give up ! You are more than just a surfer you are an OBX treasure! No reason at all to be bummed about that. AND YES....your faith in Christ will be your ultimate strength. Fast, pray and take the ancient path of discipline to get closer to the lord. We have strayed very far from the ways of the earliest Christians. Remember how Daniel "humbled himself before the lord" in fast for 12 days and was answered. Just a thought.

  • @obxarms7685
    @obxarms7685 Рік тому

    I feel like your channel needs a name that has "Outer Banks" or OBX in it. There are so few surfers in the world that you need to create a more familiar gateway to introduce people to surfing on the OBX. Once they see your vids they are in. Surfers and fans know who Brett Barley is but that's it. You need to introduce them to your world because it's awesome but I think just calling your Channel "Brett Barley" has really limited your reach.
