I think it’s work like this that really bring out the best in Garth Ennis, which focus more on humanizing his characters and fleshing out the lives they lead, making them seem like the kinds of people you’d like to share a beer with, instead of focusing solely on deconstructing tropes in the most offensive and vulgar way possible. It really shows that Ennis has a lot of heart and warmth to his stories that is rarely ever focused on
@@manintheline5331yeah it's crazy the wave of zoomer hate Ennis has being getting from people who didn't even know he existed until the boys show came out on Amazon. Even the boys comic despite it's flaws was really well liked when it came out. Only recently has it been popular to hate on it
I grew up on this comic. I have all the graphic novels. In the back of my mind, I hear the quote "My name is Tommy Monaghan, and I kill people for money. It's a living. " Classic.
@@hitmanmonaghan6633 I was thinking TV show with real actors, if Happy can get a tv show that was done from a comic, well Hitman can be done as well. It is bizzare and it wont be for everyone but I would hope for the ratings to be high with a lot of views so they can complete it, a lot of shows get cancelled these days cause nobody is watching…
One thing I think this series excels at it is really being in a DC universe but at a more grounded level. No other series at Marvel really captures that the same way Hitman does espically the crossover events. Deadman’s land for example.
Wow. I never thought I’d see a video about this comic run. I’m from a small town where the local library is always either throwing or giving out old comics and mangas. I have found a lot of the series I love from just being there when they wanted to toss out something. Hitman was one of those said series. I got all the issues up to 15 as that was all they had.
Hitman and Preacher are my favourite Ennis books. I have kind of fallen off of Ennis work over time, The Boys show is a lot better then the comic and alot of his more edgy work leaves me cold. However both Preacher and Hitman have (for me) the right amount of edgy with a lot of maturity and depth. They are both in my top 20 comics of all time.
Randomly found the Ace of Killers trade in a shop while looking for more Ennis to read and never looked back since. Tommy will always be one of my all-time favorite heroes and I wish his story gets an adaptation at some point. Happy to see Six-Pack in Kite-Man Hell Yeah. Great video.
Thank you for pronouncing his name the way I thought of it in my head. It's probably supposed to be pronounced. Mon -a -han, and not mon-a-gon. But that's how it was pronounced in my head. And yes, this comic is hilarious.
I don't know what voice y'all read Tommy with, but when I got the first 3 issues last Christmas I read him with the voice of Karl Pilkington. I think it's hilarious imagining Karl as an assassin and it really gives the read a pleasant feel to it.
Garth Ennis can polarize some people. Many find his penchant for black humor, disdain for traditional caped heroes, and trope of writing characters to be dumb or cruel a bit much. For me, I can vibe with some of his stuff. I like the directions that Preacher went and from what I’ve heard about his Punisher work I think I’ll enjoy that as well. But this work has intrigued me the most because it seems much more grounded than his other work. At least more emotional intelligent. I’m glad you spotlighted it as it was one of the hidden gems to come out of 90’s DC.
Ennis is a shitlord writer. There's basically 2 sides to him: the shitlord who takes the piss out of everything (the boyss, crossed, etc etc) And locked in ennis writing some banging material (punisher max, preacher, thor max, hitman).
@@thefvguy5648 - It depends. I'm not a fan of *Crossed* in general, but the few short arcs written by Ennis himself were the only good one from the entire run. There are in total 177 issue of *Crossed* , and sadly Garth Ennis has only written a small percentage of them. Ennis wrote the first 10 issues arc (which isn't a masterpiece, but compared to the slop some of the other writters have written for that title, it's serviceable), then a bunch of different writers took turns writting a bunch of stories in various title, with Ennis only writting 14 issues in the longest Crossed title "Badlands". These 14 issues are divided into 3 arcs, with the last 2 being IMHO the only really good issues of Crossed. "The Fatal Englishman" followed by "The Thin Red Line", with the same group of 4 soldiers (1 scot, 1 mick, 1 limey, and 1 welch dwarf ) Ennis also wrote 2 issues in "Crossed DOA" which take place in a plane IIRC? Wasn't terrible, and we got to dive a bit into "ok what's actually going on?" since none of the other writers ever take the time to ponder on why/what/how this infection took place. All I'm trying to say is that Ennis only wrote 26 issues of the 177 stack of comic book that "Crossed" consists of, and frankly they're easily the best of the lot, with the most interesting characters by far, the stories with the less gore & nudity, and more important the arcs that make the story advance the most and actually try to give us an answer on "ok what exactly is that darkness we're fighting against?" "The Fatal Englishman" in particular is a must read if you're an Ennis enthusiast, and even if you haven't read the rest of Crossed. All of this blablabla to say that IMHO it's not very fair to put all the blame on Garth Ennis when it comes to Crossed, since most of the issues that are pure schlock, misery pr0n and edgy gorefest aren't actually written by him. If you want to read a solid Ennis series that reads like the good ol' times, right now he's written *"The Punisher: Get Fury"* ... We're only 3 issues in as I'm writting this post, but it's very promising so far. We finally get our MAX versions of Frank Castle and Nick Fury in Viet-nam, in a difficult mission that we hadn't be privy to before. Plus, an old, popular adversary of both Frank and Nick makes a comeback, which is always nice. Anyway, Ennis is writting a PunisherMAX/FuryMAX crossover series right now and more people need to read it!
this sounds super cool. it gives me that black lagoon/cowboy bebop kind of vibe. getting through and finding solace in a dirt bottom of the barrel mercenary life. a certain kind of “thats life, make of it what you can” style to it.
I loved his one page JLA appearance. Poked hard of the trend for team books to slap in 1-3 popular current characters even if they didn’t fit in the team dynamic. Secret Defenders at Marvel really pushed that.
Hitman deserves a revival from the dead. Tommy Monaghan needs to be slated into Suicide Squad, a Batman game or a grind house level stream series. A time capsule of the 1990s.
I found your channel last week, and I gotta say, you deserve more views. The audio, background comic panel quality, storytelling, everything. It's awesome.
God, I loved this comic! I was hoping he would appear in a CW show, but I’m sure they would ruin him. Now that Preacher, and The Boys got television shows, we could get a show starring Tommy. Noonan’s is in Harley Quinn, but I DO NOT want him to appear in that. They will ruin him. He does get a name drop in Justice League Unlimited.
I feel like you would really enjoy Transmetropolitian. Idk just a hunch. I can't wait to see more videos about some hidden gems comics provide which are usually my favorite ones. I can see you making great videos about Preacher, Transmetropolitian, The Darkness, and more indie gems
I have been collecting these comics for a while now. I ĺove each one. It's just a shame that his run was so short. Then again, maybe it's a blessing that it didn't have time to become outdated.
I like that you mentioned Tommy forgetting that he has powers and relying on his skills instead. Personally, I think that is something he has in common with Jesse Custer from Preacher.
Hitman, a Garth Ennis fan, the Skullgirls and Persona 3 soundtracks and Last Summer Whisper by Anri? I know we will never meet, but in another life, I would have loved to have grabbed a beer with you and talked about comics.
