So I see that with the biggest barges as the barge almost gets through it’s blocking most of the flow and the velocity of the water increases much faster than it was without the barge in there. Great fluid dynamics lesson here for the physics majors. The barge creates its own Venturi.
I wonder how many of the boat engines are recycled from the war machines left after the fighting stopped. I was there and was on the very same river and canals. Like the videos and people

The big blue boat had two problems..it was too long and it was empty. Once the majority of the hull was through the gate and in the higher water above the dam, this lifted the rear of the boat and thus its propeller higher in the water so it lost its ability to push the boat.
@@rorymunroe3771 No, it was at full throttle the whole time. The reason the engine RPM increased at the end of each run is like @ThomasGeorge said, the propeller was partially lifted out of the water.

I'm no marine engineer but I did own a 10m classic wooden boat with twin 2.5 lt engines. The two large empty barges did show a lot of prop wash, so I assume the props were high up, this will cause cavitation and a loss of thrush, a bit like spinning the rear wheels of a car the engines working like mad but the car aint going anywhere. I wonder if flood the rear end of the cargo hold would improve prop grip, a simple scaffold frame and poly sheet erected at an angle to form a dam, easy to build and easy to stow away when finished with. Water can then be pumped in enroute to the barrier and emptied on the way to loading.
All the failed attempts must eat up so much fuel. Wow, I realized that I am the first time traveler and I go to the beginning of time and there are all the other time travelers thee to great me...

The reason is, its wider, allowing a lot less flow to bypass the hull. It's not the engine power.... its the resistance.

exactly, i was thinking the same!! beside that, they build the gates to narrow, so the current is extremely strong!
They could open more gates too. Sometimes you can see more than one gate open
So all that boat need is a ballast? The captain could pump some water into the hull and try again I guess.
