@@bloodyscalp94 I watch a lot of stuff like this. REM is secretly my favorite band, and they were the epitome of a whole thing I wanted very badly to do in the 80s and 90s, and seeing this footage does weird things to my insides.
My brother was a booking agent (Southern Rock acts) at Paragon in the late 70s and worked w/ Ian Copeland. He was surprised when I told him I had heard a great new band in Athens (where I was in school) when he realized that the 2 Paragon office boys were on bass and drums. He even had demos which REM had sent back to Macon. I got those tapes from him, and they were my prized possessions, until they were stolen from me. Ughhhrrr. Great days.
REM and The Police were linked through the Copeland Bros. Miles founded I.R.S., REM's first record label. Ian (RIP) as Mike said, ignited a fire under Bill and himself and Stewart of course excelled with The Police who were on A&M Records. A&M distributed I.R.S. releases through 1985. Always loved Bucks open shirt sleeves.
Peter Buck hated opening for The Police. "I'd rather play for 10 people that showed up to see us than 10,000 people that showed up to see someone else." He was just being polite here.
@@sexobscura Sure, Jan. I met them twice on tour in the early nineties and they were as cool, relaxed, and forthcoming then as they are in this video. 😂
My sister claims that Scooter, from The Muppets, is based off(dang, pun suddenly presented!) Mr.Mike Mills, whose instrument and voice is a huge part of our beloved four piece!
hey she just mixed up, between the two names, Michael and Mike, it was Sunday morning for her too. There are worse things she could have said. She was always a fine interviewer.
Tapes were stolen while I was living in London. Probably could have bought copies within days at the Camden Market. I actually saw REM in London that year. They were there recording Fables & performed at a fairly large venue. I was used to seeing them around ATH & ATL in clubs (or outdoors), so it was strange to see them in this bigger setting. It was a sell out, so they had already formed a following in the UK. Ironically, it was while @ that show that my flat was burgled & the tapes stolen.
Looking at this, I want to go back and tell 18 year old me that 36 years are about to pass by in a flash.
Can I go back to this date as a 27 year old and ask Neena Blackwood out? Probably not.
WOAH! Hey, noisepuppet! Interesting seeing you here!

He didn't have any cuff links.
MTV really was about music back then
it was never anout music
mtv sucks

How old are you? They played music constantly back then, broke bands... it was vital back then. It became shit later. Reality TV killed it.
@@awadaawada6738 Kurt Cobain imitation is noted.
You mean white music. Not much from anyone else.
Total fashion icons! I wish I would look like Mike Mills. In any decade really.

Such respectful young gentleman.
they're really assholes in 'real' life

they seem to throw a lot of shade by calling the Police's music "simple"
@@TonyLovell But it's true though isn't it - it's meant to be a compliment - simple in the sense of "not fussy...."simple" but unforgettable❤
Ian Copeland really did help REM a lot in the early days.
Picturing their faces off-camera when Deff Leppard are mentioned...
Def Leppard ain’t that bad, cmon

40 years ago...OMG.
I'd say Mike Mills looked like a complete nerd, but I looked like that in 1983 myself!
Me too!!👍😃
Peter looks like he just got out of bed! Check out the bed head!
Mike sounds different from the later years.

Peter Buck seriously looks so much like Julian Casablancas

That woman's hair *SCARED THE FUCK* out of me
I loved Nina Blackwood back then. She was so hot and such a rock 'n' roll kinda gal. Love the hair! Oh, and of course, R.E.M. are boss.
@REMLostmyreligion Yeah that is funny. Don't call him Michael even though that's his given name!
Mike Mills used to look so nerdy back in the day.
What the frick is on her head?! Lol
What died on her head?
Mike Mills looks like marcie from peanuts.
Peter and Mike look like they have been to sleep yet
Kinda odd hair style she has, still kinda pretty though
