I am amazed how you can take a shape and break it into building steps by cutting up other shapes. I watch you and it makes total sense, but then to consider you came up with all the ways to cut to get the shapes you want is very cool.

For anyone who can't snap like in the video (in v. 0.91), Make sure you enable those >
1. "Enable snapping (%)"
2. "Snap nodes, paths, and handles"
3. "Snap to paths"
4. "Snap cusp nodes, incl. rectangle corners"
5. "Snap smooth nodes, incl. quadrant points of ellipses"

Nick, I have never created anything in inkscape before but I am going to try and follow your tutorial. Once I have created the puzzle, will I be able to save it as an svg and if so, how? Also, can you tell me how I can make one of the pieces with a straight edge so I can create a finished puzzle? Sorry if it is a simple process. Newbie here :) Thanks so much for the video! once again you send me on a trip down curiosity Lane, I wonder if after making the puzzle pieces, could an image be laid on top , and be able to take it apart. I've thought about it and never got past once the image is placed on top how would you cut it apart ?
interesting process. I'm looking for a way to make unique puzzle pieces that fit together properly for my laser cutter to make jigsaw puzzles out of wood. But I want to do that with the picture in the background and draw vector lines to cut around objects in the background picture as I create the puzzle pieces, and I'm wanting to make large 1000 , 2000, or even 3000 piece puzzles 2 ft x 3 ft. I'm wondering if this can be done in inkscape?

Snap cusp nodes comes pretty handy for that :)
Before I start, when the jigsaw pieces are made and fitted together, and you put an image on the puzzle will the puzzle lines show as in a real puzzle and can you separate them as in a real puzzle with the image on each piece?

having trouble, when we add the rectangle, and centre it, my rectangle is too long? so it's actually over the left and right sides of the page boarder? I've got Px set for the dimensions, and locked them so the width and height are of same ratio, but my image goes off the page, and yours doesn't?? pls help

Awesome videos Nick. I've watched just about every one and learned a bunch. Thank you! The center puzzle piece in your thumbnail image seems to have a gradient fill that follows the contour of the edge of the piece. How did you do that?
I think Nick duplicate the piece and set the fill lighter into white colour and lighter transparancy and then set the blur into about 0.1 or 0.2 percent to the duplicated pieces.

I'm wondering if there's a way to design each piece to contain its part of an overall image. My objective for doing this would be to take a child's drawing for example and to turn it into a jigsaw for the child to 'scatter' and 're-assemble' for spacial awareness, fine motor, so forth, either electronically or as printout. What are the chances?

Yes that could be done. Hard to explain by typing though. Basically I would make a bunch of puzzle pieces, overlay them into the image, then do Object > Clip > Set for each puzzle piece

Were you able to get this to work? I imported a photo, sent it back behind my puzzle pieces, selected the photo and one of the pieces and did Object > Clip > Set and the piece doesn't simply snip a piece of the photo in the shape of the puzzle piece...like when Nick shows the individual piece is composed of individual stroke pieces at the end of the video...Any thoughts on what I did wrong?
The way I got around it was to manually trace over two pieces (premade by following the tut) very meticulously and carefully . . . creating a new replica of a horizontal and a vertical piece. With those two pieces I created a full jigsaw template by copying and pasting. Once I had that I placed my image of choice into the field and set about using Object - Clip - Set to chop my image into usable pieces. Didn't take too long at all. 30-mins to complete a 30-piece jigsaw and that included wandering off making a coffee.
It's worth tracing out a new 'cutting' template because once it's done it's done for life.
Thank you so much!! I was able to figure out "joining" the parts of the pieces to make them clip-able. The problem that remains is if I layout my pieces over my image and do Object > Clip > Set for a single piece, it seems to clip it into the puzzle piece but then the rest of the image goes away...Is this normal? I still have allot of other pieces to clip....If I try to select them all and do Object > Clip > Set then everything goes away except a single puzzle piece...Do I need to put the photo in a layer maybe??
I have a problem on the second "cut path" command (after the peanut has been been cut and the bottom half eliminated). The second cut path command does not cut the bottom line into pieces. Any idea what it might be?
Do you have the half peanut shape raised to the top? And are you sure it's still a stroke and hasn't been converted to a path?
Ron Brooks I was having the same problem and I got around it by extending the node on the right side of the peanut shape to the bottom of the curved line. Then I deleted the left side of the curved line, duplicated the peanut, selected the remaining right side of the curved line while holding down the shift key and then selected path -difference. That may sound confusing but it worked for me.

can u make a tutorial on howto export files inkscape? often when i try to export an png i only get a black picture and the vector is gone.. what am i doing wrong? thanks for your tutorials btw they're great!
make sure you place the graphic inside the page border and from export option 'page' is selected.
Yes. In addition, you can select the object(s) you want to export with the select tool, then export them.

I have the snap cusp nodes "on," but It is not snapping together like yours is doing. I have repeated the steps several times but to no avail. Any idea what I am missing?
Sorry, that may be a glitch with Inkscape. I get this problem once in a while too. I would copy and paste everything into a new document and see if that works.
