So it looks average but is it reliable for kms of riding? Is the range limited (little climbing potential)? I am looking at this or the Norco XR A2 for 25% more price wise. I have the Norco XR S2 already but want something I can truly throw around and not care to much on things going wrong?

I would think it should be reliable for many km's for an average rider doing daily escapes. I wouldn't be so quick to say that if you were a heavier rider doing multi-day trips, where you are carrying gear that nearly doubles the weight of the bike. Yes the gear ratio is not at all suited for climbing. Especially if you are weighted, it will not be something that you will be able to do comfortably. I haven't seen the Norco up close so couldn't give you a good comparison.

Do you think this bike would be great for general commuting? I live in amsterdam and need a good bike. Or do you think the regular nicasio is better for that?

Unfortunately as of yet I have never been to Amsterdam. But from what I've heard about the high level of infrastructure for moving by bike, unless you specifically wanted to also do some off-roading the tire size seems a bit unnecessary. Remember pushing the pedals to move those tires uses more energy which becomes more apparent as the distances become larger. The benefit of the big tire is a softer ride and potentially more grip, depending on yourr tire choice for the given surface. Im not discounting this bike as a commuter, just being more specific on the usage. Also a plus is the durability of a steel frame but this also comes with a weight penalty. Which is not of much concern for you as I've heard that Ámsterdam is relatively flat. Hope that helps in your choice.

Would you say this bike is good for people needing entry dropbars to try out? Also, is the brake housing compressionless? One thing I don't like about this is that brake and shifter wires are exposed under downtube.

For the first question, I would say yes. It seems very entry level. Second question: I doubt as the price would suggest the brake housing is compressionless. But I'm not sure why that would be a deal breaker, seeing as that can be changed if you so wish. Also, the routing of the brake and shifter cable, I would figure it to only be an issue if you are doing some serious offroading. Which at that point, especially if it is weighted offroading, I would say you might be approaching the limits of this bike. Especially with the frame not leaving enough room for a bigger tire. Hope that helps.

I always have to err on the side of caution. You would be surprised at some of the uses I've seen people try with different bikes.

I tried one of these, but the derailleur was so bad that I returned it.

It may have not been the rear derailleur. Only saying this because I have mounted this rear derailleur with a thumbshifter on a few different builds and havent had any complaints. Possibly everything upstream.

@@TheUndeadMechanic Okay, you might be right. I first thought the derailleur hanger was bent. Shifting was fine in the lower gears, but bad in higher gears. When I adjusted this, high gears were good, low gears were bad. And the chain was always skipping a cog.
The bike was brand new and thats why I returned it. The 4 Konas I purchased later were far worse. I regret sending back the Marin.

@@MichaelB-UA-cam its really tricky with indexing. Anything can lead to bad indexing. Ive seen frames that have braze-ons welded at angles that messed up the indexing

@@MichaelB-UA-cam its crazy for me to think that i really like the microshift thumbshifters and the barend shifters but dont like, at all, the brifters.
