    I feel like people have rose-tinted glasses when it comes to 80's and 90's anime. As if everything was Cowboy Bebop then ecchi came in and ruined everything. The first anime I watched was Legend of the Overfiend. Once anime got out of being stigmatized as "for kids" it became extremely hyper violent and sexual.
    80's-90's anime women were getting raped by tentacle monsters then blow up into red paste. Shit has actually really toned down over the years.

    • @lenleon3699
      @lenleon3699 2 роки тому +36

      Were they even alive back in the 80’s? Garnt is the oldest and I don’t think he is that above 30. It feels like they know about anything before late 90’s anime through second hand knowledge rather than actually seeing it. Which I guess is fine, not everyone will hunt for old rare shows like I myself did, but that also leads to very sun informed opinions about the state of current anime.
      Fanservice and sexualization has existed in the medium for several decades, way before the 2000’s. The only new wave, technically, was the whole isekai boom, and even that is just a return to old anime tropes (Has everyone forgotten Magic Knight Rayeart and Inuyasha?). Even the recently popular Lyciris Recoil is basically a Japanese-stylized Gunslinger Girls(since that one featured European girls).

      @@lenleon3699 I wasn't old enough to experience the 80's. But I was around when 80's VHS anime tapes trickled down into hole in the wall VHS shops in NYC during the mid to late 90's. This is around the time where my cousin (much older than me) would rent Legend of the Overfiend, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Faces of Death- niche media att. This is when people would try to find snuff films and stumble upon Kite, Apocalypse Zero, Wicked City, and Violence Jack.
      I know there probably familiar with these especially Joey. I was more so talking about zoomers and normies that see something like MHA and think lewding high schoolers is a crime against humanity. I was about to say. Besides the few like harem labrynth isekai and redo of healer, i have not seen something as grossly sexual as kiss x sis or to love ru in a very long time. Early 2000s was worse than 2010s by far. Look at soul eater, or naruto. I havent seen an anime lately that has been so unnecessarily sexual ive been like "damn, i legit dont want to watch this." Last one was fire force, but knowing the author and soul eater, that might just be the authors style

      @@dogdicer1153 that is just his style yes. He will always add some plot or story relevant excuse to add some ecchi scenes. The point was the world embraced giving up sexuality and emotions for immortality, and the show is learning these emotions in a world devoid of them. From sexuality, love, heartbreak, weight issues and more, ON TOP OF a significant environmentalist message, the show is amazing on all levels. My only disappointment with Trigger is that their Star Wars Vision episodes should have been longer and more fleshed out lol. Alas.

    Why does everyone seem to have a selective memory of past anime? The OVA boom of the 80s was defined by excessive T&A and violence, and really, there's always been an eb and flow when it comes to authors (even in mainstream anime works) including fanservice in their works. It isn't anything new to the medium, it's just more convenient to watch more anime/read manga, hence why you see more of it in the market than you would have before.
    Studios like Gainax through the late 80s and 90s definitely helped to make it more normalized in TV works though.

      Finally, there are people with brains that doesn't just defend fire force because the author panders to the anti-sjws. I'm an anti-sjw, but you also need to have standards, else people like the fire force mangaka abused it and paint your side to be the bad guys.
      Like seriously, Tamaki is the perfect proof for sjws that the sexualization of woman just for the sake of being sexual object happens. Compare this to other examples of sexualized woman that sjws tend to used where you can say that those women aren't just sexual objects but actual character.
      Lara Croft sexy? Yeah but she's a capable adventurer. Samus Aran sexy? She's a top bunter hunter. Erza Scarlet often get sexualized? She's a one of the strongest fighters in her world.
      Meanwhile Tamaki ACHIEVE NOTHING without her sex. She went through training and you figured she would beat people with the training right? NOPE. Oh and what's worse she reduced what would be a cool POC character, the assassin Assault into a fool.
      Man, I say, if you want to destroy the anti-sjws, then just do like the fire force mangaka. Create sexualized females that achieve nothing and claim that you do it because you are fighting against the prude sjws.

    Ok, I'm an old and I remember when casual nudity was just part of anime, even broadcast anime. Urusai Yatsura had Lum losing her top in the finale of the first episode and big shows like Macross and even Space Battle Ship Yamato had nudity. I think etchi anime evolved out of the immense fan response to those scenes. The original Cream Lemon shows we're far more story and actual content than the later hentai episodes became. It was always just considered part of the anime culture. Fan service was literally that- serving the fans what they had requested. It has since devolved into echi just for the sake of echi tho, and I think you have to blame the Eiken OVAs for that. After Eiken, fan service became not just a genre, but a full on industry.

Also when i watched the original Gundam, one of the things that most stuck out to me is that they pretty much gave all the female cast a bath scene like they need to fill a quota or something. The sad part is where grown ppl no longer in that phase of their life are trapped mentally and forget themselves, leading to a situation where you have hordes of 20s and 30s year olds consuming a nonstop supply of what can be described as Soft Child P*** (some of it not so soft) and refuse to take their viewership elsewhere. There’s also something to be said about some of the creators of these shows too, but that’d need its own conversation. I think people just need to know when it’s time to accept their maturity and move on to another genre (not medium. Genre.). 18+ ppl watching Ecchi Shonen (or let me translate… Soft Child P***) is what’s weird.

It was sort of jarring to us to see sexual euphemisms in the first few episodes especially with how they pilot the franxx and connect the stamen and pistils but for the characters they had no framework to see this in a sexual way. Over the course of the story they learn more about information regarding sex and procreation that was withheld from them and in turn the humanity and hope that was kept from them and the reasons for this. I dunno, personally I liked the show and was interested to follow these characters as they navigate relationships in their world.
      In general, for me whether or not sexualization is gratuitous anime depends on the story itself. I think a lot of anime (specifically isekai) do throw it in just because and I think that’s lazy but I don’t think this is always the case. No hate though on anyone who is just sick of it. It could definitely be reined in and used more strategically.

    I used to have this conversation at art school with the disney animation kids trying to convince them to try anime. The easy answer is "different cultures," but Takashi Murakami wrote a book called "little boy" that goes over the history of post war Japanese art. Everything from Anime, figures, contemporary art, manga, video games etc.. from the 1940s to now.
    The biggest thing I noticed when I really got into Japanese art history was their outlook on art & "fiction" is very different from the west. A homogenous culture with 99% natural black hair & brown eyes but anime characters are anything but. Fiction is fiction & doesn't in anyway correspond with real life. We can empathize with characters while still understanding they aren't real nor are they a representation of something in the real world. It's just Art. Japanese media doesn't have power over how real people think.
    It's interesting looking into the west & mainly Americas history with television & marketing. With the rise of television it became easier to sell products to people but in order to do that they need to believe what they see on a screen. Want clear skin, here's a model with perfect skin who was sponsored to tell you how you can too. Coca cola & Disney put billions into marketing & honestly are the founders of modern advertising. This bleeds into Art. Fiction should feel more "real" & "real" should feel like our "fiction."(that we made & are now selling - disney (probably) Lara croft was redesigned to look more "normal/contemporary"(im definitely not against the change) the last of us deliberately gave characters unattractive features to show diversity & not every one is a model/actor (shown in concept art for the game compared to production art). Theres nothing wrong with any of this but its the difference in cultures when the west tries to make art more like reality. Our conflicts & ideals in reality get blended with art. In alot of ways this enhances a film, book, a game, more immersion, but in others our issues in reality are in art too. People chant for art to fix real life problems.
    I think the side effect is sometimes we look at anime this way. Sex is always touchy & narrow minded in western culture, but in others it's normal, it's not always a marketing tool to get eyes, it's another element of style in a project, or it's all of these at once. Ive always seen 'Sexualization" in anime as another element of style. Like how super hero movies never mention property damage & civilians killed, how every actor is technically a model but no one seems attracted to any one out side of a disney fairy tale way, I could go on but Art embellishes elements in order to heighten others. Sex is one of those elements. Anime exaggerates it, turns it into stylized visuals, & gets some people aroused. its just another element that makes up Japanese art & not necessarily real people. if something makes you uncomfortable or breaks immersion in someone else's art its cool, it may not have been for you & neither side should judge the other. Is Keanu reeves killing a man with a pencil necessary..no but its cool af. Is fan service in fire force necessary..nah but its a visual trope that isn't always deep. I think kill la kill its just a parody on fan service by giving "plot" actual plot & purpose.
    I'm open to being 100% wrong & would love to hear any other thoughts. I miss these conversations when the whole school is filled with other artist.
    TL;DR
    Sexualization is a western problem & sex in media is touchy but anime doesn't come from that school of thought & god fathers like gianax & trigger use sex as another form of style. Just like how john wick uses violence, superheroes uses morals to justify saving people & grand superpowers, sex is normal & can be exaggerated, emphasized, & if it turns you on thats a bonus
    😂if it makes you uncomfortable or breaks believability try a different show, it all good.
    Yoko Taro said the reason he designed 2B in Nier the way she is is because "I Just Really Like Girls." & thats all the reasoning an artist ever needs to give.

    • @fluidthought42
      @fluidthought42 2 роки тому +13

      I think the biggest two problems with that sort of thinking tho is:
      1) You get silly excuses like Hideo Kojima swearing that Quiet totally had a serious and dramatic reason for her fetishistic design. If he went the Yoko Taro ie honesty route he wouldn't have been as laughed at by critics and fans.
      2)"You see, whether you can draw like this or not, being able to think up this kind of design, it depends on whether or not you can say to yourself, “Oh, yeah, girls like this exist in real life.” If you don’t spend time watching real people, you can’t do this, because you’ve never seen it.
      Some people spend their lives interested only in themselves. Almost all Japanese animation is produced with hardly any basis taken from observing real people, you know. It’s produced by humans who can’t stand looking at other humans. And that’s why the industry is full of otaku!"

    • @TANKYU
      @TANKYU 2 роки тому +1

      @@fluidthought42 but that’s what i mean, why is Quiet’s design considered ridiculous or sexualized. More so than snakes robotic arm, or him abducting people with a balloon, or a virus that kills people who speak certain languages 😂it’s all exaggerated & stylized but sexual themes get more criticism weather it is creative or not.
      Personally i think. 2Bs design is style but Quiets a bit…boring. I’d love to see a cool adaptive suit or something like MGS4 that has like gills or something so her skin can breathe. That’d be more creative than a bikini but Yoji Shinkawa tends to design one character with some sort of appeal. 90s action movies would do that too. Is it bad design? Arguably, but i try to be open & see the style behind it rather than it’s just being horny on main.

      @@4idenn It's about fitting in with the tone and setting of the series. If you're gunna do a horney show, go for it, more power too you. The thing is, when you insert random fanservice into serious and dramatic shows for no reason you get tonal whiplash and it takes you out of the story. That's not to say that serious shows can't have moments like that in it, but it needs to make context in the world they are presenting. For example, even Highschool DxD (or at least the first couple seasons) work well as a serious show because one of the main characters is a literal succubus and the world built around that makes it all work logically in context. So, you can have the serious scenes that aren't undercut by the sexualization, because that is a relevant part of the story. However, when you toss it into something like Fire Force where it's just LoL this character pratfalls into panty shots for no reason, the tone doesn't mesh with that of the rest of the series and it just comes off awkward when you have the majority of a scene dedicated to this out of place recurring gag that often steps on the toes of the dramatic moments going on when they happen.

Then I got super invested in the characters so I was able to ignore it. The genius thing about fanservice is that it alienates the right kind of people, boobs and ass are just an eye candy for the viewer and at the same time keeps anime in general away from the mainstream attention, which consistently deteriorates a medium overtime.

    'separation of church and state' almost sums up my view on it, when it comes to keeping ecchi for the sake of ecchi away from seriousness.
    Serious shows don't need ecchi/sexualization. Keep the ecchi in it's lane, and the serious stuff separate, and things will be more enjoyable in general, because you don't have to deal with tone whiplash or awkwardness.
    I don't want, let alone need a shot of someone's cleavage bouncing in the crowd in the middle of a fight scene or drama/tension moment. It just takes you out of it. Now, doing that same shot of one of the fighter's cleavage bouncing mid dodge, or having one of the characters in the drama/tension trying to use their assets to defuse (or escalate) the situation (or even just making motions that would naturally result in some movement, like stamping their feet harshly or waving their arms), that works fine. You have to work it in as part of the scene, not just slap a panty shot over the screen and call it good.

    OK with Franxx the first like 6 or 7 episodes is one long innuendo. BUT if you pay close attention like real critics, you will notice that goes away fast. They start to peel away the layers of the story and dive into everything. You are literally saying don't take a story seriously because if the first 1/4 of it. If you watch it again you will only think of 1/3 of it and then realize...holy crap I forgot about almost ALL of the deep story and world! I hate how anime "fans" and "critics" (not ever single person but so many public voices) have one, or a handful of, stupid formula(s) in their heads and if an anime doesn't fit one of them, the anime is stupid or shouldn't be taken seriously. It comes from people in a bubble not understanding real story telling. There are silly things in Franxx yes, even things taken from Evangelion, but the makers are honest about it and that doesn't mean it us amazing story, character, or quality wise.

Just because it's animated doesn't take away that creep factor.
      Also I agree with the other commenter that the show doesn't seem to show much in terms of cosplay, only to really use the sexual side of cosplay to amp up the echie nature of the show - which is annoying because cosplay isn't just sexual, a lot of people cosplay for something other than the sexual side and it's only really a minor few in the overall fanbases that use it in that nature
