      it's funny how many similarity's i keep finding between gw2 and ff14 lately, strikes/ trials, push/crystaline conflict, ability to use all weapons/class swap (which is weapon based mind you)... I still disagree with the new model and the pricing, and saying that it was a "complete success" isn't entirely true, a success? sure, a complete success? no. SOTOs ending definitely left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths, and i get they may (remains to be seen since the first part of soto was great and were in part 1 of janthir) working out the kinks, but im trying to remain hopeful for the game since it is still a great game.

    The problem with boons in general, not just quickness and alacrity, is that the game is built around them. They're not actually buffs. They're baseline. So the game doesn't treat them as temporary boosts, the game treats *not* having them as a debuff. And that is completely backward to how it should be.
    Boons in GW2 are treated like tipping in American restaurants. Rather than paying servers a living wage and tipping being used as a small bonus, the system is built around tipping being absolutely necessary to survive. The same is true with GW2 boons.

    • @SponTen
      @SponTen 4 дні тому +3

      I don't think the game was initially built around boons being permanent though.
      It's just that, due to gamers being gamers, they optimised for the system and ANet had to adjust, and nerfing is rarely popular so... here we are.
      The entire game, other than Core zones, would have to be rebalanced for a different system (eg. unstackable boons, or cooldowns on receiving boons).

      @@SponTen This is the reason why players going through levels 1-80 have a near brain aneurism when reaching HoT. The skill level required takes a huge leap and requires boons to survive.
      GW2 presents itself as a game for casual players, but that's no longer the case in most expansion/endgame content. You need to be nearly a top skill players to get most stuff done unless accompanied by other players. (I mean, it IS an MMO, so that's not the worst thing, lol. But you see my point.)
      They should have nerfed boons rather than increasing enemy levels to match the boon playstyle. I think they alleviated some of those issues with EoD/JW, but HoT is still a nightmare at times to get around in, especially with farming HPs. PoF is better than HoT, but champs and legendary bosses are still near impossible for the average player to beat alone.

      @@benjaminfast5496 Boons aren't required for HoT (Story and OW). They're only really required for some Raids and CM content. It's just that new players don't realise just how powerful they are. But it's still extremely important to have a cohesive build and execute it well.
      I disagree that players need to be nearly top skill to get most stuff done, though yes the game still does require a lot more skill for level 80 zones than

    • @bastien-
      @bastien- 2 дні тому

      @@SponTen The problem is the way they build based on extremes. When a sprinter breaks a world record, the governing bodies don't extend the length of the track to compensate. Likewise, when an incredibly dialed in player hits a high DPS benchmark, they shouldn't build all future encounters around it. With boons, its not an issue of nerfing them, its an issue of them building around and expectation of boons, thus a lack of boons--which should be the standard--becomes an inherent state of nerf.

      @@benjaminfast5496 I solo champion hero points for fun, I've done every single hero point in the game on every single elite spec. The number of times that a boon has allowed me to solo that champion is practically nonexistent. Boons make the game easier, but they are by no means a requirement for solo playstyles.
      In fact, a lot of people fail in open world PvE content because they expect to take a Snowcrows build into that environment and perform flawlessly. That's not what those builds are designed for. They are not open world builds.
      I agree on some level that the game is pushing a meta focused around boons and it needs to stop, but the statement "requires boons to survive" is false. You don't need boons to survive. Ranger and Mechanist can solo 99% of the PvE content in the game without a single boon on themselves or their pet.
      You're taking elements from group PvE content and applying them to open world PvE content. This is what I've been talking about for years. Players group up and get used to having boons, and then they can't perform without them. They expect to have boons. They NEED those boons to play properly. Quickness and alacrity are their heroin.

      @@siperog Without the absolute effect of Stability and/or the massive damage reduction from Protection/Resolution the 33% speed increase is godly for avoiding stuff. There's absolutely no need for it to do more and it's only relatively worthless because there are Boons that effectively negate the benefit you get from it. It's the same with Vigor.
      If I-frames were the only way to fully avoid a CC-effect or extreme damage then Vigor would be of immeasurable worth. If no Boons allowed the negation of these effects or reduced the damage enough that you could tank it, then the Vigor effect would be one of the most sought-after in the game.

    Remember everyone, 2 of each proffesion's elite spec has a Trait that could be something fun but isntead reads "Give Alacrity/Quickness when you do X(May or may not be cunclky based o nthe fact we had to give everyone these boons on specs that weren't designed for it)".
    I want my Bladesworn trait that allowed me to dragon slash 2-3 times in a row, was it good? No. Was it funny as heck? Absolutely and the character even said "Once again" when you did it.

    • @Nilruin
      @Nilruin 2 дні тому

      This. Bladesworn shouldn't have been given Alacrity in the first place, Alacrity on Warrior should've been given to Spellbreaker.
      But yeah, every elite spec typically has one grandmaster trait that is objectively worse than the other two options, primarily due to changes to the other traits by the devs.
      The worst example in my opinion is Draconic Echo on Herald. That trait is useless now. If you're going for a Power DPS build, you're gonna take Forceful Persistence, and if you're going for Boon Support or Healing, you're gonna take Elevated Compassion. Nobody has any incentive to take Draconic Echo.
      This is bad because before, Elevated Compassion was the healing trait and Draconic Echo was the boon support trait. And now Draconic Echo is neither. It's in limbo, nobody takes it. Quickness and healing are superior to any temporary buffs you can give yourself after consuming a facet, it's not even an argument.
      Every elite spec has something like this, and it's why I'm baffled why the developers are focusing so heavily on PvP and WvW gamemodes. I'm not saying I don't think those gamemodes need some attention, but that attention should never come at the cost of what 90% of the playerbase plays, PvE. There are a bunch of things that need to be addressed in PvE, and nerfing Scourge shouldn't be one of them.
      I legitimately don't understand what this dev team is doing. I don't think they know what they're doing either.

    We shall see how many more years it will take them to add "r-click->join squad" or just "join party" to work for raids as well. Takes a lunch brake to add but would significantly improve gaming experience.
    Same goes with elite specializations name. Takes a 2 sec to add extra line of text " Ranger Druid" instead of just " Druid". Not everyone plays all the classes to be able to figure out the base class.
    From my PvP experience, you need not only to be expert in your own class, but you also need to know what other classes are, what skills they have and how they are being played. You basically need to be a game expert. Difference between Bronse and Plat guys is astonishing.

    • @benjaminfast5496

      They also should have an extra icon at the top for "GROUP FINDER" rather than hiding it in that other tab.
      With it, you should be able to select RAID/FOTM/STIKE/DUNGEON (and whatever else there is.) Once you select your category, it lists all the missions/dungeons you have unlocked. You select one, and hit "FIND GROUP." It starts a Queue and other players that are looking for the same content get paired with you. Simple.
      The LFG works fine for created squad/parties for specific open world content like HP trains, Bounties and such. But for actually playing the group content, it's so archaic that even players that have played for years don't use it (or even know it exists.)

    As a mesmer main, my primary concern of losing quickness & alacrity is what happens to Chronomancer? I really like the theme of manipulating time by manipulating cooldowns & player speed!
    One idea off the top of my head is if each shatter lowered cooldowns by a flat percentage for the Chronomancer, and then a well skill could give percent cooldown reduction to allies each pulse, rather than each time an illusion is summoned. No idea how balanced that'd be, though. 😅

    • @jhmi7877
      @jhmi7877 4 дні тому +2

      Chronomancer makes me sad because it got gutted to the point where it's not even the best at providing the boons that first came with the spec! D:
      But yeah, I don't believe removing those boons would be the answer either. They definitely need balancing, and perhaps Anet can start by not giving each and every spec or class the ability to give out quickness and alacrity in spades. Make the boons more meaningful by making them a bit less accessible. There's a reason people have used them as a crutch, and I think a big part of it is just how easy they are to obtain at this point.

    • @benjaminfast5496
      @benjaminfast5496 3 дні тому

      @@jhmi7877 The problem is that they've made even some open world content difficult to play, so removing those boons from certain classes to make others that can utilize them more valuable, is it gives the classes without access to them a disadvantage in just playing standard open world content.
      So to make it balanced, the classes that have access to them would have to be nerfed to make up for the fact that they have that advantage. Which sucks for players that want to play those classes without that type of focused gameplay.
      They really put themselves into a corner on this one. Lol.

    13:52 - 14:20 I think I remember hearing about that too, but don't remember where. Maybe it had something to do with the introduction of weapon mastery in SoTO?
    A weapon trait rework I remember shortly into SoTO's launch was to Revenant shortbow so that skills 1-3 pierce by default, instead of requiring the "Heartpiercer" trait from the Renegade elite spec tree; and reworked that trait into simply being "all bleeding you inflict deals 25% more damage."
    This had made me wonder too about core weapon skill traits now that professions are getting more weapons in addition to now being able to use elite spec weapons on any elite spec. I'd figure it would make more sense to rework more weapon specific traits like the aforementioned "Heartpiercer" so older weapons can feel more complete like the new weapons do, since they don't retroactively get traits (although as we've seen, traits that formerly benefited spears had their text updated to specify "underwater spear").

  • @vukkulvar9769
    @vukkulvar9769 5 днів тому +9

    I too don't trust ANet when it come to lowering cooldowns or increase skill speed.
    There's still weapon specific traits when they said they would do away with them so players can more easily play what they want.
    Unless they do both in the same patch, they should not do it.
    An other aspect with removing Alacrity and Quickness is that we would not make the game more varied but less as we would lose the support role and everything would be even more about DPS and only DPS. Support is a rare role in MMORPG and some people love that role of buffing allies so they make more damage. GW2 is already bad at having healers because it wasn't designed to have them, removing support would only make things more boring for everyone. Permanent uptime is not an issue.

      I honestly don't think the boons themselves are the issue at all. I like the general mechanics of boons personally, and I like managing them/interacting with them. However, not only are they so damn accessible, but there's also the fact that we can affect how long they stick via concentration/duration uptime. So we have all these boons, and we can keep them on us forever.
      To me, if they removed boon duration and perhaps lowered the amount of boons we're all able to just vomit onto the floor, then maybe we can get closer to a better balance.

    • @benjaminfast5496
      @benjaminfast5496 3 дні тому +1

      I understand that the support role is enjoyable by some players (I love playing a healer in FF14), but GW2 wasn't made/designed to have roles. That's what they wanted to do differently when making it, was defying what is typical from an MMO, and removing roles by making classes that could do any playstyle and still be able to complete the content. It was supposed to be casual friendly and now there's high demand on casuals to meet certain criteria before being accepted into some groups.
      By making end game content so difficult and adding alacrity/quickness, they've pigeonholed themselves into this spot where roles are required, but there's no way to properly assign them when creating a group. They've created what they were trying to avoid, and now the only way they can fix it is by removing those boons and/or adjusting the difficulty levels of all the bosses (and some open world enemies too), which is a lot of work.
      They created their own monster.

    Personally, I wouldn't want to see the Alacrity and Quickness removed so much as to put major nerfs on uptime.
    If every single quick and alac provider caps out at 50-80% uptime then there would be more space for variety in builds and teamcomp. You could double up on boon providers, play builds that aren't affected as much (like Bladesworn and Reaper), compensate by using options that give personal uptime or just straight up eat the damage loss.
    It would also help combat powercreep (Boon traits and +Con gear is a DPS loss) and give good player better means to distinguish themselves through flexibility in buildcraft and on-the-fly adjustments to rotations (due to spotty boon coverage).

    The excessive need for quickness/alacrity has kind of muddled down the concept of "build freedom", to whatever gives the most of those things.
    If Anet ever wants to tackle this issue, I wouldn't want to step in their shoes, because it feels impossible to create a solution that the entire playerbase is going to like.
    When they remove both buffs/boons, the players that like to grind efficiently are going to be very upset with slower progress, and some bosses will become outright impossible like Muk said.
    When they make all skills as effective as if quickness/alacrity are on constant uptime, the rest of the game will become trivial, and they're going to need to take a while to balance the rest of the game around that.
    Best I can think of, is to to limit both boons to open world PvE, buff some world bosses, and nerf some of the later raid/strike bosses.
    That would probably be a good springboard to see what the more hardcore playerbase will do in a quarantined endgame PvE without those boons, yet still leave the more casual playerbase to mind their own business, and produce future content on the premise of what the hardcore players come up with.

    Strikes/Raids/Fractals etc. requiring Meta builds is exactly what has deterred me from trying them over the last 3 years. While I'll look to the Meta builds for inspiration, I don't follow them exactly because I often have certain gear I want to use, or prefer different weapon types which makes me choose different traits. I don't want to have to change all of that just to appease other players to be allowed into a strike mission.
    Also, while they do come with their own issues, GW2 really needs a new group finder method. LFG is so archaic. I need to find what I want to do, create a group, and then hope that there's another player looking to do it too, and that they fill certain roles (even though this game isn't supposed to require roles which is why they didn't do the trinity.) They honestly may as well create roles in a new duty finder. Select the dungeon/strike/raid etc you want to play. Have 4 roles to fill (Power DPS, Condi DPS, Tank, Boon Support/Healer). When you queue up you select your current role. You get assigned to a group. In content that requires more than 4 players, once the 4 main roles are filled, the rest of the slots are filled by anyone with any role. It's not perfect and may need some tweaking, but it would be way more accessible and less intimidating for newer players. Players that don't fill a niche role, or don't have the gold to fully gear themselves in Meta build armor, can still get into content without being kicked and have PTSD from ever queueing up again.
    The thing is, players that still want control over who's in their group still can by making a party before queuing up. FF14 does this system very well, and GW2 should take some inspiration from it.

    I know many may disagree, but the point at which I learned that the expectation was for 100% uptime of boons was when the combat system started to lose me. I find it very boring, and for me at least, removing alacrity and quickness would greatly increase the interest I have in the combat again.

    If you want a measurable example of Quick and Alac being too Spider Eparch has you covered.
    When SotO was current content it was plausible that you had enough Quick and Alac and sorted people into groups that his timer relative to his health was okay. Now that SotO is no longer current content such an assumption is implausible as people really have no desire to do it unless they feel like it. As such without Quick and Alac his health bar would be oppressive and he was given a massive 30% reduction in health so it would feel okay.
    You can also see it in Of Mists and Monsters where the Greer side is almost always ahead of Decima on damage. If you ask people it's because they're skilled and the people on Decima are noobs that do less damage. Of course, they do less damage as they have to spread out and as such get shorter Boon-uptime while Greer is essentially just a massive Boneskinner where everyone can stay together and always have good Boon-uptime and thus significantly higher DPS.

    I was glad they added strikes as group replayed story content, but as someone who does weekly raids they're fun but not something I return to often. The CM's for some reason are all very hit or miss for me. Doing them with my group was interesting, but I can't say I've returned to any of them or wanted to with any regularity.
    It's not dramatically different from ffxiv's trial content and the savage modes those have, just that it feels like there's much less game outside of them (haven't pvp'd since HoT xD).

  • @Crimson_Reed
    @Crimson_Reed 4 дні тому

    Here me out: what if they added condition boons - by which I mean boons (perhaps new boons/more powerful ones) that come with a downside. i.e. might but better, with a downside that negates quickness to a degree to make you slower.
    or maybe boons that work different relative to conditions so if you have just might it works at 100% effectiveness but if you also have quickness then only 50% effectiveness
    my idea here is to add a mechanic that makes players questions if something like quickness is necessarily worth it for the type of dps you got.
    - it could also open the door for other builds. i.e. a tank build which can provide prot that wont negate alac, but now, instead of having another dps you got to have this other kind of support making it 1 less dps to spit dmg
    what do you all think?

    I think it would be more entertaining if they invented raids that boon strip, or even more fun boon rage. Example if anyone has quickness during the scythe strike phase damage is quadrupled or all players with quickness get hit with a stack of torment for each stack of quickness. This way players have to be more smart about buffing.
    They also don't have to go back and tune old content this way.

As long as they exist they the meta will revolve around them but I think you could make it so that the difference without them does feel as bad. Quickness should probably be reduce from 50% to 25% but I could see 33% as an intermediary step. The only problem is without quickness some builds feel really slow and boring.

    I think there is a good reason why, at launch, there weren't runes or sigils that boosted boon uptime, aside from doubloons. They were never meant to have 100% uptime and the game feels so much flatter and boring now that they are mandatory. They are nothing, but bloat now, if you remove them and nerf the health of the bosses accordingly, nothing will change, aside from the animations not going to look like everyone is on crack. The roles that provide them are artifically created and not something that the game would actually need. Anet created a problem and they selling the solution for it in the form of quickness and alac builds, it's just terrible.
    But now we are so deep in this flat and boring gameplay direction that changing anything would be such a massive undertaking that it's just impossible to do it, so I guess let's hope they learned enough for GW3.

    This is why it makes one question rather or not there is or will be an actual GW3... too many expansions planned. Now, this is where many get confused about GW2, many think it's a vertical progression when it's actually a horizontal progression. I've said it for years that Anet needs to enforce mechanics back into raids, fractals, strikes, etc., etc. Take away some of these boons or tone them down, too many want to "cheese" their way through content these days. Look at Nayos meta... easy to do if people would learn the mechanic instead of staying in a down state waiting for a revive or TP back to the fight. Then the community gets into a heated argument over who did what. It's unfortunate but, it happens... A LOT!!!
    Now, as for trusting Anet... hell no... look at the original "banner warrior"... dead, gone. Then when they "brought it back", yea, was useless, could drop banners but you lost any weapon ability period, oh the joy of that. This is also why I hate using the "golem" in LA to test dps... "give yourself every boon in game" to test... go to the open world, find a champ boss, solo it, time yourself, that's the real dps check. Anet could fix a great many things but won't and if they did... would be porked over just like the original banner warrior was. Either set the boons to only one self or remove altogether, lower some the HP's on some of the bosses... something, not going to claim there's a right or wrong answer but regardless, the answer is in front of them.

    "Getting one shot out of stealth"
    No, more than likely they hit you 3 or 4 skills in a row, or you already had condis/low health from some other enemy.
    Even though the games are vastly different, a lot of rules/tricks are just staple for mmo pvp. I came from WoW, 2004-2020, so picking up pvp in GW2, EsO, FF14 etc, is easy for me.
    Furthermore, it's about knowing skill burst chains as much as it's knowing about individual skills. It's best to watch pvper videos who do breakdowns.

    Also I do respect that it is a popular thing to want to remove quickness and alacrity, but also I love that we're currently in a spot where in group scenarios where people have some defined roles that by and large every profession can provide (note: profession, not elite spec) I also do not want to lose the option of playing support builds that aren't healers, even if I don't like by and large how they are implemented I don't want to go back to when a number of specs were unplayable in endgame pve because chrono and druid kinda did it all support-wise for a little while.

  • @ToukaGontier
    @ToukaGontier 4 дні тому

    For me I wouldn't want to see quickness and alacrity removed/changed but it isnt just because of how nice they are to play with, it is more so that it would remove the feeling of support builds, and make some builds kinda lose a reason to play.
    The only "support" in Gw2 is healing and then quick/alac. Removing quick/alac first of all would remove BoonDPS so that middle ground support role is just fully gone. And then healer wise if the boons are removed, groups would most likely just play 9DPS 1 Heal/Tank and the healer would just be whichever class has the most healing power and usefulness.
    It would basically mean any healer that can't solo heal, that can't bring stab/aegis, would become "useless" in the meta.
    And in turn any pure DPS that doesnt have a boon as an excuse for its lower DPS, would just be left behind.
    And with DPS numbers already being too high for most content in the game, having more DPS and less supports in the group will just make the content even easier.
    I think if it were up to me, Id just make alacrity and quickness easier to apply so its kinda just always there anyway and move it off the grandmaster traits onto a smaller less conflicting one.. and keep it at one boon per elite spec (idk why chrono has both) so each elite spec has a higher chance to be brought as a boondps/healer if its falling behind in normal dps.
