If you can, toilet commode/shower bars would be great for post-surgery or the elderly in general

A lot of times, if you can get the doctors or social workers at the hospital to order one for him, they charge it to the insurance rather to have him pay out of pocket. If he is having a visiting nurse... She or he can order it for the gentleman too.

A shower chair, if he doesn’t already have one (the kind that fits over the side of the tub), a hand-held shower head and a bathmat (one of the charcoal or bamboo types that allow for quick drying after stepping out of the shower). Being able to bathe safely is very important to those who are disabled (I speak from experience).

Another option for post op hygiene is disposable rinse-free shampoo caps and bath wipes. Medline is a brand I’m familiar with, but Walgreens has a generic kind too in the aisle with the mobility aids, compression socks, etc. The shampoo caps can be microwaved prior to using to make it more soothing too! The shampoo caps are great for special circumstances like post op or really bad days, it’s nice to have on hand if you are unable to bathe or get somebody to wash your hair. The bath wipes are way better than baby wipes bc they’re thicker, wetter, bigger, and better at doing a proper cleansing than just the standard baby wipe. Definitely a great thing to keep on hand.

The biggest thing is to make it easy for him to put things away while still having ready access to community used items. Trash cans next to all the areas he spends the most time are important to help him throw stuff away in one area, esp after surgery. Switching to all cotton sheets will make it easier to get them fully cleaned, even if he has any accidents (food, bodily fluids, etc.). Having hospital pads on his chairs or even a cotton towel are a great way to keep his chairs cleaner. They can then be tossed into the wash every now and then or as needed.

As former care staff; incontinence items such as fabric pad for the bed and chairs, as well as depends may be helpful to just have around for him.
Simple foods and drinks that can keep him hydrated and fed - if the cargivers arent allowed to shop for him that could help him a bit.
House shoes that have backs, and are grippy enough to not slide around.
Depening on the type of socks he wears, there are devices that help put those on. Also Jobst Stockings, if he has an order for pressure socks those things are a must. (About 10 to 20 a pair, usually only 2 are needed)
Lotion, it will help reduce the skin flakes and reduce potential for sores.
Possibly pillows or cushions for the chair so he can shift his weight and not get bed sores. Also pretty cheap.
A TV tray or something for his chair so he can eat there.
    Life alert if possible.
None of these are necessities, but could help him if he doesnt have them. Is there a Go fund me him yet?

A raised toilet seat is something very simple but it helps older folks out so much, especially after heart or ortho surgeries. Also making sure there are no slip or trip hazards like rugs or mats without rubber undersides is huge. Grips in the show/bathroom are good too but i dont know if that is within your ability to get organized on short notice.

Body scrubber w/handle for bathing himself in hard to reach areas. I think they make similar for potty wiping too, not sure. But self hygiene care is so crucial for dignity and it's physically not easy for some seniors. I really want to see how this man is getting along post op. Best to him!!

I want to be like you when I grow up. I’ve always struggled with cleaning my own room let alone my shared home, and everyone who lives here (me, my mom, my brother) have ADHD that strikes us with no motivation and mental strength to clean it. We’ve been trying, and we’re getting there, and I could only dream of helping others who have the same and/or related problems with cleaning.

IDK what type of surgery he is having but for my post surgeries I needed a potty chair, walker or cane, wheelchair, shower chair, something very easy to reach into for my meds, a valet box actually worked wonders for me, sleep mask, tons of wipes and Kleenex and puppy training pads to put onto my recliner in my sofa due to having to constantly moisturize my giant skin graft on my thigh and it leaked also and because I'd start peeing before my husband could get me up and walk to the potty chair in time due to having catheters for days. That's so generous of you to do these wonderful things you do! You're a sweet 😇 for so many folks in need, thank you for helping when so many won't!

Especially since he is elderly, I recommend maybe making sure he has a little shelf or something where he can keep water near where he sits and sleeps. Water intake is so important and it's much easier to remind someone to drink water nearby.
Surgery recovery is so hard, especially for the elderly. You are so awesome for being compassionate and helping him.

It might sound silly but getting one of those toy grabbers (maybe they make more sturdy ones for easy accessibility) but getting him one of those would be so helpful since he isn’t able to reach down. Thank you for doing what you do! 😊
