  • Verdi was a progressive thinker who didn't believe in the supernatural. He wasn't superstitious and believed that a curse is only a matter of perception. Tahu Matheson, Head of Music at Opera Australia, explains everything you need to know about the music of Verdi's Rigoletto in less than five minutes.

Excellent insights like this into the structure of the music of a famous opera are all too rare. They are increasingly valuable as we move even further from the period of composition, and become less familiar with the idiom of the music. A reminder of (in this case) Verdi's innovative genius, and how his composition transcends its period and becomes timeless.

My first opera when OA brought it to Brisbane. Enthralling. The sets were amazing too.
