This is real opera---emotion, drama, through the voice. No fucking Euro-concept production blah-blah. I Lombardi is my favorite very early Verdi. Perfect role for P at this stage of his life. The spirit of Donizetti hovers all over this score, a composer who adored the slow cabaletta, as here.

Superlative in the highest degree. To such an extent that even when he comes in late at 2.01, (& he does!) it doesn't diminish the wonder & enthralment of his voice.
@@cm5071 "Cut him some slack"? Are you an American? Singers, any singers, not least professional singers (!) must breathe in BEFORE they start singing. Most people have to do this, otherwise they can't sing. But Pavarotti has such a large chest volume, he doesn't need to. Apart from that he's lazy, with diction, in languages other than Italian, & couldn't read music, (so I've read). Please don't misunderstand me. I'm Pavarotti's greatest fan! There'll never be another like him.

This would be amazing for most tenors in they’re prime. He is amazing here and he is well past his prime at 58.
he was always prime, just a different prime, his voice was so far above everyone else's, he was at his worst, way way better. one in a million voice.

Gosh, those high notes are strained, a bad night for him. I recommend getting the 1969 Rome version, there Pavarotti is at his best.
