    It's a tomato horn worm. They will destroy tomato plants in no time.
    For your tomato plants that still have green fruit, instead of chopping them, pull the whole plant up. Hang them upside down in your cellar or basement and the fruit will continue to ripen.
    Thanks for sharing a great family harvest day!

    How about making a little hard cider just for the adults, Al. My Grandfather used to make hard cider for the family and would give pints to friends as Christmas gifts. Nothing like fall in old New England.

  • @BullittMcQueen1
    @BullittMcQueen1 7 років тому +4

    It is a Tomato Hornworm. I found this. "To keep hornworms away from your tomato plants next year, try interplanting dill or basil; marigolds are also an excellent companion plant and keep many pests away."
    Wow, 5 gallons of cider from one sink full of apples. Imagine how much cider you could make if you used all your apples. You might think about trying to make some money selling apple cider. I am guessing it would be much more difficult to sell hard apple cider. But you could sell regular apple cider.
    Your step-father seemed to like the apple cider. Is it good? He mentioned red apples, but I only saw yellow apples.

    yes the roots are to be left in the ground when the plant is ready to be removed cut them off instead of pulling them out. The roots also give space for next years roots to grow into and provide food for next plants. And besides its messy with shaking them roots all over, don't do it!You can also keep the left over mature beans and corn as seed for next year.

  • @singleman1986

    Fun video as usual. R S got it correct below. That's a tomato horn worm. "Nasty creatures"! Kinda unusual to see one this late in Fall tho. Kill that pest. A worm that size can strip a tomato plant to the stem in no time. FYI//heads up, you'll have MORE of them next year. SO, when you put your tomato starts out next Spring, go out after dark with an LED flashlight and hunt 'em down. Some of their 'stripes' will flash back like 'neon' to make 'em easy to spot. Forget about wasting your time looking for them in daylight. You can literally put your hand on them and not spot 'em. ps......put some yeast and a bit of BROWN sugar in some of that cider and make it 'hard'. EXCELLENT 'adult beverage' for winter time 'doldrums'....LOL.

    the worm was a tomato hornworm. You should have put it in a jar, it will turn into a cyrsalis soon, pretty cool to watch. So now what are you going to do with 5 gal of cider? If you have jugs to put it in, you can boil it and save it in jugs.

    Just watching some old videos today. I saw you fed the animals the green tomatoes. Years ago we used to wrap each in a piece of newspaper and store them in a drawer in a cool dark place and check from time to time until they ripened. You will have tomatoes well into the fall depending on how many green tomatoes you have. Love your videos!!

    Your parents seen very kind happy amazing people.
    I am wondering why you didn't eat the green pepers or tomatoes left on the plants. They are good green to and if you would have put the tomato plant upside down in the ogok or basement they would have ripened on the plant.
    Ps tomatoes and potatoes are nightshade plants mabey its better not to give them to livestock next year.
    Kind regards rose. Loved the Apple cider pressing well it's still juice for now it needs to ferment to make cider. But that was 1 sink full are you planning on making more this year since you can have 20 of those 5 gallon buckets full with all the apples you get. And you could add sugar to make even more cider or vinegar with the scraps.

    While it is a good idea to leave old roots in the ground for compost and soil structure, I heard that with out a green plant with a root in the ground the microbs die off in about two weeks. Best to plant winter rye which will survive under the snow and keep the soil food web alive till you plant next spring.

    Tomato horn worm, pupates to a luna moth. Don't feed to pigs. Tomatoes are from the nightshade family, the fruit is edible, the vegetation is toxic. Same with potatoes.
    I think you're running the grinder backwards. The feed chute sends the apples to the far side of the grinder, you are grinding and pulling the apples back. The outlet chute then throws the pulp to the short side of the press hoppers. Run it the opposite way, the apples will pull into the grinder in the same direction of travel that the hopper feeds. The pulp will then come out the bottom chute and throw towards the wide side of the hopper. The outlet chute is not centered over the hoppers for this reason. It allows some "fling" room. You'll have less of the grindings feeding into the forward hopper (the one you're pressing) this way. That was quite a bucket of juice. Was that only from the one tree?

    • @BullittMcQueen1
      @BullittMcQueen1 7 років тому +2

      David -- I think they had already fed three-quarters of the apples from that tree to the pigs. Those trees are loaded with apples.
