Okay, a little history for the younger people from an old fucker. Back in the day all music was on AM radio, all static and all. In the early 70's when all FM radio was nothing but classical and Muzak (elevator music), rock stations began migrating to FM. (no static at all) And all the DJs spoke in an almost whisper. ♫ Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end...♫ ☺
@@Frank-pe9pk And we kids were always the ones who had to go slap the side of the black and white tv to make it stop screwing up. We were also the early day remote controls! "Go turn the antenna!"
A soft summer breeze, windows down. Headlights and taillights....cruising The Strip with the greatest songs ever recorded playing on the radio...Lord what a blessing to be a teenager of the 70s!!! I would give anything to bring back just one night for my sons to experience the magic!!
I’m transported back to elementary school, hearing this song. This band defined my school years, and I absolutely love ‘em. Always enjoy your reactions.
I've watched most of your reactions and believe that, if given the chance, Steely Dan might ultimately make your list of top 10 bands. I would describe them as a jazz-rock fusion group and their orchestration is always just top notch.
@@nancydenton7496 Right. The background vocals are by 3 members of The Eagles. The string arrangements are by Academy Award and Grammy winner arranger and songwriter Johnny Mandel. His most famous song is probably his Oscar winning song from 1967, "The Shadow of Your Smile."

Back in the day, FM (Frequency Modulation) was amazing. FM stations were clear as a bell, and they offered stereo as well. One might listen to AM stations to hear favorite hits repeated, but the sound quality didn’t compare to FM. You could count on there being “no static at all.”
This was a song for the movie FM. Back in the day AM and FM stations were very different. AM played all the pop songs and FM would play the heavier stuff like Zeppelin etc. FM sounded better and played a better variety of music. 🇨🇦✌
"Hey Nineteen" is my jam. Maybe that one next? Steely Dan is a vibe! I LOVE your reactions BIZ & HELLO you're facing the camera!! I've always wished you'd face the camera with that smile.
This was written and performed for the Soundtrack to the Movie "FM"...which is an excellent soundtrack and the movie is a reasonably accurate insight into late 70's radio culture before the FCC allowed the Corporations to take it over completely and essentially end radio as a cultural icon and force for creativity and musical expression......
As an old guy who listened to this song repeatedly when it was new - and who was working at an FM radio station at the time - it's so amusing and wonderful to see and hear someone hearing it for the first time. And loving it.
That Sax part got me across the country back in ‘78 in my ‘74 Plymouth Valiant... Imagine it coming on while you are blasting across Kansas in the middle of the night! Wow, what memories...

The song is the theme of a movie, "FM," from 1978 that bombed at the box office. The song in the spring of 1978 was a Top 20 radio hit. The background vocals are those of 3 members of The Eagles.
My favorite by them. I love watching your reactions to great music, the oldies as they're known as these days. Would love to see you do the Outlaws Green Grass and High Tides.

When FM radio was introduced it gave you limited range for the signal, but the signal modulated with sound on the Radio Frequency which typically was pumped out 100,000 watts (the upper FCC limit). This eliminated interference to the local signal, while it also made available frequencies space 200k Hz apart. This allowed a LARGE AUDIO BANDWIDTH that AM couldn't accommodate (only 10KHz apart) 20 times the space for sound. This allowed for Stereo. FM = NO static at all. 1964 was big year for Stereo Recording, Psychedelics', and the Beatles had met Dylan, their lyrics changed for the betterment of mankind. AM radio rode on the 3rd component of the radio signal, which is Amplitude (overall power footprint) . As the strength of the signal varies so does the quality of the sound. And interference is inevitable from power transformers and sun activity. At night the Absence of sun ALLOWS interference from distant stations. So everyone cuts power. AM will talk half-way around the world on as little as 1,000 Watts. But the frequency must match atmospheric conditions.
There was Steely Dan:The original early band stationed out of NYC..then there was Steely Dan THE LA TWO...who got the best studio musicians such as Larry Carlton...Bernard Purdie...jeff Porcaro...valerie Simpson..the Brecker brothers...steve Gadd...even Wayne Shorter and Joe zawinal from the progressive jazz fusion band...Weather Report. Michael Omartian....etc..etc.
The other song you were probably thinking of is 'Deacon Blues', as it could be their greatest song. If you ever go bar hopping with some high- end ladies, gotta play that one for them!
And the line 'no static at all'? We used to have to listen to AM stations. There was definitely static, lol. You don't know how lucky you are, to not have to hear AM.
Who makes music like this today? I was born in the late 50's and would like to hear some current artists make music like this.
