Absolutely, it’s quite easy to get sucked into the idea that how other people sketch or make art is the right way, but it’s much more rewarding when you find your own way of doing things. Thanks!
Great advice re going back to early sketches. Sadly, when I did this I found I am no better now than I was then but watching your videos I now know why. I am spending far too much time watching videos on how to do realistic drawings that I hardly ever sit down and draw anything because I know I won’t be able to hit that realism. I forgot about drawing/sketching for me was supposed to be a fun pastime not a self torture hobby….. so you have put me back on the right track and I will work harder at having fun with art materials rather than comparing myself to photo realistic artists🙏
It’s so hard not to get sucked into comparison envy, but I do think it’s important to follow your own path. Aa I said, my biggest breakthrough came when I stopped worrying about what others were doing or the end result and just enjoyed the time spent drawing like a child would. It’s so liberating! Very pleased you’ve found some inspiration here though, delighted it has been of benefit to someone.
WOW! You can really see that you’ve developed your own style now. Thanks for taking the time to share and inspire… I’m going to find my first sketches 😳😳😳haha. Best wishes.xx
Hi Carly, thank you! It has changed a lot, once I started embracing my inability to draw straight lines there was no stopping me 😅 Hope you find your first sketches, such a fun (and possibly cringeworthy) thing to look back on. Cheers, Donald.
Welcome aboard! That’s great to hear, you’ll be a sketching addict in no time I’m sure. I think removing the fear is more important than learning techniques - teach yourself to not worry about mistakes or the final result or what others will think, and you’ll enjoy it all the more 😀 Cheers, Donald.
This was filmed at home using a reference photo, there’s a link to the photo in the description if you want to download it. It’s from a site called Unsplash, all the photos on there are copyright free so you can use them for whatever you want. Very handy for finding subjects to sketch.
Wonderful, wonderful.
Thanks Joseph, much appreciated 🙂
The freedom to draw as you like or personally see is the thing here. Thanks for emphasizing and showing it. Nice work.

Thank you Monika, really appreciate that. It’s a little bewildering to hear such things but I’ll gladly accept it! Thanks for watching, Donald.
I love your whimsical style! I'm new to sketching and still trying to get past the fear stage. I think you have helped! Subscribed.

Did you take a photo, do it on location or find the photo online?
I'm pretty curious
