Do you do combat? If you can fight and beat the ai in an unfair fight most times youre good to up the difficulty
well that's fair. If you are in prince difficulty you should be way ahead. The thing with deity is exactly that they get way more resources early on so it's not unusual to be losing so hard early on, but since the AI plans poorly and scales poorly you end up winning kek

2:32 it happens to me all the time too. I usually remove my city marker a couple turns before i get there and they, usually, move away.
I remain convinced that the AI acts upon the markers human players put down.
They just goalkeep the good settler spots. They do it even if nobody has tacks or has sent someone over there. City states do it more than the ai civs
Why Potato can tolerate Deity and I usually can't: two civs have 4X his science, one that is on his continent, denounced him, with 4X his military, and what does he say? "This is great! We are discovering so many city states!" Now THAT is a positive attitude, lol.
the cs scout thing is a weird glitch from city state that started life as a barb clan, once they become cs units they just don't move for the whole game. only way to get rid of them is to threaten them with enemy units (they'll respond to barbs, or you can declare war), or levy the cs units and move them yourself. it's annoying af for sure though!
Gotta say I'm enjoying this way more than the "god start" videos. Anyone can do well with a good start, this one takes skill.
If there isn't a Mausoleum thumbnail is it even a Potato civ series?
I'm trying to understand why India never attacked you. Even when I start with a few military units, I can always depend on a nearby civ attacking me in the early game.
Couldn't be a potato Video if the AI wouldn't suprise us with something stupid and unexpected. Why ever Mali thought that war at that particular point in time would make sense
No room to expand elsewhere? The AI does really dumb things when they run out of settler spots such as settling a 2 hex plot 3 hexes away from a size 6 city from another empire and then flips not long after.
Actually, if a scout has explored all it can, why not place it on the best city spots, forcing other players to be aggressors or choose less optimal spots. Maybe it actually IS a thing the AI does?
It is and i feel like potato is just acting surprised. All the ai goalkeep the perfect settler spot
A valid argument, except I'm pretty sure they've been city state scouts both times, so it makes no sense for them to block the good city sites.

You can best tell how good someone is going by player score imo and I'm honestly really curious to see if he can pull a win from this as he's been behind by a high margin this series.
Vanilla civ AI is incapable of finishing out the game, so a experienced player like potato should be able to win sooner or later.
@@kryndude I mostly agree but I wouldn't underestimate deity difficulty. He has lost before with better starts. And even after my own 2000 hours in civ I've had my fair share of near losses. But on coastal/sea maps the AI truly struggle
I'd like to see a game mode where civilization special abilities are turned off, but you get the special abilities from Sovereignty!
I've found the barb spawned city-states just don't move as much as city-states spawned at the start.
Ive had plenty amass huge armies and help be one of my warfronts. Ill have to watch their units more

Potato are there any plans on casting some championships with OnSpot in near future? You two make such a great casting duo!
Also this particular series is indeed inspiring. I often get very disadvantaged spawns (or forced to wage a prolonged early war) and eventually end up behind AI on all stats, so my gaming session is just a remap simulator. This series show that everyone that tough situations can be more than manageable.
I love playing coastal empires, I usually play with mods that boost coastal yields.
One of your settler spots down in the south will nab you a Niter tile! Getting those Frigates would be delightful.

If you remove the city marker the scout will move. I think the AI uses that data against you sometimes.
They do it and ive never used map tacks

Hey potato what's the name of the culture victory screen mod that you use? Looks pretty handy. Also how are you able to have a dynamic resource lens that moves with your cursor? I have the resource lens but I can't figure out how to get it to dynamically move with my cursor like yours so I can plan out cities based on how many resources are within a 3 tile range

Out of curiosity, why didn’t you build Commercial hubs? They get great adjacency from the Harbors and it seems like gold is really important this play-through for speeding up new city growth.

A thing I really want for civ 7 is for wonders to have nationwide effects. If pyramids gave +1 builder charge in ALL of your cities, then it would be a strategic target to take specific cities in peace deals.

Potato’s civ overexplained series is great to understand the intricacies of the game. It does have complex mechanics and the series does a good job taking you through a lot of them, from where to settle to what to research at what time and where to build your districts. I would definitely recommend it if you’re looking to get better at the game.
