over six months ago I predicted that someone somewhere is building an offshore foiling monohull that will break records in a way we can't conceive right now. The last new supermaxi offshore record smasher was Comanche and that was a good few years ago now. I doubt anyone has lost interest in breaking records like the trans Atlantic, S-H or Jules Verne so it seems odd that no one has launched a new 'record breaker' for a while. its been my suspicion for a while that there a number of big offshore foiling monohulls being built in top secret around the world and this is just the first to be revealed. very exciting and im sure more to come. great episode. thanks for keeping the adverts a little more tolerable.
Who would have guessed that the 21st century was going to be such a huge leap forward for sailing. Everything from foiling cup boats to kite hydrofoiling to wing foiling. Every year or so there is some new innovation that upsets the apple cart.
I am looking forward to seeing this technology make it into a cruising design with automated controls for stability. I would love to see how it would work in the open ocean (transatlantic or transpacific.
Fantastic and informative episode on foiling developments. Thank you! I for one, who has always been somewhat of a traditionalist that loves the gaffers, Pilot Cutters, Fifes and the like, am all for the further evolution of all things sailing. It would be fantastic to see the commercial application of foiling technology to affordable recreational cruising blue water boats! I wonder what those designs would look like...
During AC 36 renowned american sailor Ken Read was asked how much of monohull foiling technology would trickle down to other forms of sailing. Ken said it would be a lot more than you would think and this is playing out now with yachts like Flying Nikka and another larger one under design. We have a fascinating few years ahead to see where this technology extends as it is alloyed with AI and advanced automation .
If its it reduce distractions I'm sorry to say its not working :) At first I was trying to workout if it was a lens at f1.0 but the leaning to and from the camera soon gave that away. What was the video about, boats or something?
with the constant lurking danger of nosediving while foiling I wonder if it would make sense to reduce that risk considerably by having two smaler set of foils. Like one pair in the front and one pair aft. Or like a smaller pair in the front and a slightly bigger one somewhere in the back of the boat. I wonder if someone has ever thought about trying this or maybe even had some models to scale with this configuration? Would be great to get an answer to that! Because at least to me that seems to be the obvious solution to this constant threat of nosediving !
What they often DON'T tell you is how often foils break in rough seas and how catastrophic foil failures can be, offshore racing is a dangerous and risky-as-hell sport. It's basically the Grand Prix of sailing, these boats definitely are not your dad's cruiser and this sport is definitely not for the faint of heart.
Hello, I was wondering if the boat might create propulsion by raising and lowering a front and back hydro foil as seen with people riding hydro foil boards. I’ve seen the pump the board so to speak jumping weight up and down which propelled the board . A computer could work out how much and what movements are needed and just go to work with hydraulics , do you think this idea could work??ps also a foil pivot motion could produce forward motion!
A para-kite as well as swivel and pump foils could give a lot of otherwise wasted propulsion 🤔ps just had another invention thought , could some of the wind coming off the sail be directed through a set of tubes and down to a under water propulsion device whether through the foils or out of the keel or if allowed have the air forced into a jet prop .?
I wish AC had stuck to the wingmasts instead of the foiling. Perhaps less spectacular but certainly more promising for cruisers than the extremely fragile underwater foils.
I don't know what you are trying to achieve, but the image of you during the interview is just crazy. Please don't do it again :-) The interview itself was first class, thank you.
It has always baffled me that these cup boats require the crews to become soaked all the time. A tad more construction would be safer and allow crew to concentrate better on their jobs and that would offset any speed or acceleration costs. Even the added weight of the extra onboard must have an effect to slow the boat.
When the question is asked what perfomance (that's the most stupid word I know for speed) to expect, all we hear is a number! But... what the jizz are the units this dork Mills is thinking about? Mach 40?!
The problem I have with this is that, to me, these things are not really boats. That's probably because I'm old and, even as an ex yacht designer of sorts, can't make the transition to flying across the surface of the water on struts. I think we need another name for them. Not rude, I'm not being facetious. To me having foiling and non-foiling yachts in the same Vendee Globe was ridiculous, I think there should have been separate races. Ideally I would apply this to any yacht race.
I'm stuck figuring out how to build a cruiser with a 2 car hold that I can fly. You can haul cargo on a green ticket but time is money. Think Sloop John B on foils lol.
Found you because of the cup. Have stayed because it’s great content 👍🏻
Just what we like to hear!!! Thanks - keep spreading the word!
Utterly ridiculous levels of exceptional production quality and incredibly informative.
This channel is on loop on our crew mess screen - 🎖🎖🎖🎖🎖🎖🎖🎖🎖🏆
Great to hear!! There’s loads more on the channel so you don’t even need to loop!! Keep spreading the word!

I was sailed out at a young age by an over enthusiastic Father but I love to watch sailing from a dry and stable distance. Keep up the good work.
Best boat ever made
I love the DF 95 in the background
Great video. I particularly liked the interview with Mark Mills.
Great insight into the foiling yacht and I love analogy with windsurfing and also with younger sailors, it's spot on.

Offshore foiling in big swells will be interesting.
Fantastic conversation. Thanks for letting us sit in for a great listen.
Your content is excellent and very professional… keep it up 👍
Cool, will look forward to see how ‘Flying Nikka’ develops. 😎 🇦🇺
Ka pai, Thanks for another great instalment Matt.
good show - I liked the interviews. and there was some excellent footage.

i love this. please keep giving us the latest news.
Loving your episodes and updates!
lol good vid/ interview mate. Lol your blurry background is hilarious

Top report thank you
fair winds to all!
Fascinating ))
Oh dear, more appendages to snap off!
Maybe on coastal/island cruisers someday or maybe foil retro kit for my morgan 38

The design looks like a mix of ETNZ, Luna Rosa and Magics boats. Wouldn’t say it is the next generation!

damn, been waiting for a foiling cruiser. in my next life maybe.
I’d like to see one go through high seas

why cant the hydraulic power comes from a screw underwater? get rid of more people
Rip marine life 🙏
Sustainability is like preparing for stagnation. Nothing is sustainable in the longterm but how long is that.
Maybe new cross atlantic record.
Vassiliki?
How much for an 69F?
Ask to Persico Marine 😊

Lifes' too short to own yugly boat like this, I don't care how it sails.

Slick adverts hidden in content. Sometimes it’s hard to tell where the narration stops and the promo starts. I think it’s unethical.
Great episode thank you but a keel on a foiler is NOT A FOIL BOAT Your welcome
Hi
I stopped paying attention to America’s Cup when they went to foiling. It just isn’t sailing. It’s tech.
gg
⛵👍🏾✔😁✅💻
Axis coupling... forget it. You need 2 rudders. Mention a successful three wheeled car. Trying to make a tricycle boat work is just stupid.
Speed demon but the most fragile looking off shore race boat I've ever seen.
Outdated views / lack of understanding of windsurfing & windfoiling.
More "knifes" to cut wales and oceanic life...
Unless it has a full shower , I'm not interested.
The guy's waaaay out of his depth... a copycat fraud .... his stammering explainations of no substance & body language barely grasping at a new wave
