    Here you are! Where have you been, Zack? I've been a subscriber for a couple/ few years now but I haven't been getting any of your videos in my feed. I think the last one was about a jump rope or maybe about an overland camper conversion. Anyway, nice video. If I may add my 2 cents, I would say to also set the teeth to keep saw from binding up while cutting. Setting the teeth makes the tooth part of the saw the widest part of thr the whole blade. ...and a tip I learned here on UA-cam is to make the first few teeth smaller at the tip to help get your cuts started a little easier ..
    About, (who again? ,,Dave??) ..he's so tough, the NAVY seals begged him to join. Finally, they joined him...

    I thoroughly enjoyed this hand saw restoration start to finish. More impressive, for me, was the crosscut from a ripsaw modification without the usual tools normally employed. Zack, your problem solving skills are to be admired.

      Thank you very much for that Daver. I've long made the joke in some of my less humble moments that if I was a monkey I'd be getting my termites with a STICK! I have to give a lot of credit to my Step Dad though for raising me with the view that there's always a solution, you just have to sometimes think a little outside the box to see it. Thanks a bunch for watching

    That speed square trick was something else! I like the idea of having a reference for "eyeballing" it.

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  8 років тому

      +Michael Lawing to be honest I only learned that function of the speed square recently and love it. Amazing the built in functions of a lot of our hand tools that we never know.

    • @MichaelLawing

      Absolutely! I'm finding more and more that the old hand tools are a lot more convenient than the modern stuff that's taken their place in stores.

    After seeing this saw go from old to gold throughout the four videos, seeing it cutting through wood was very emotional. :')
    Good job. I enjoyed that. *applause* :)

      Thank you very much for that, it does touch a certain few heart strings each time I pick up one of these tools that I've put a lot of work into. I really appreciate your compliment and appreciate you watching my videos ~Z

    Great series Zack. Way better than running down to Lowes for a crappy modern saw.

      +Zack Of All Trades I did find at atkinssaws.blogspot.com/ a picture with the floral pattern on the handle like on your saw. It says that pattern was used from 1910's thru early 1930's

    I watched this restoration from beginning.. on double speed! Sorry, but its just too long and I don't need to see every moment so I sped it up and could even perfectly understand all the monologue..
    Great job - beautiful work and what an end result! Thanks for sharing!

    Do not use the same number of strokes when filing teeth that are so different. After the first jointing, do not file the teeth that don't have flats or shiny spots. When filing the ones with flats, file only half of the flat when filing every other tooth from right to left, then the other half when filing left to right. Do not flip the saw, just angle the file the other way. There is much more to do that what has been shown in this video.

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  6 років тому

      This certainly isn't a comprehensive video.

    • @marvco64
      @marvco64 6 років тому +1

      That's for sure..... the problem is, people who know nothing about filing a handsaw will watch these kind of videos and think they are learning the right way to do it. I can't tell you how many saws I've encountered that people have attempted to file and end up with the teeth being worse than when they started. The teeth on the saw you are using for demonstration has such bad teeth, they need to be "reshaped". Reshaping the teeth requires a whole different set of instructions. An entire video could be made just for that step alone.

    very nice. I have 5 saws to restore for my sons and grandsons. This will be helpful. Suggestion, would a syringe and needle have been helpful in glueing?

    I bought a tool for sharpening saws. It is from E C Atkins& Co. It appears to be a hand held tool. I was just wondering how it's supposed to be used.

    I enjoyed this entire episode. I have several saws which are in need of repair. I'm just getting into hand woodworking. The saws belonged to both my father and father-in-law. I'm inspired to tackle the job. Btw, you offered a You Tube channel for a couple who are homesteading. Could you tell me who that was. Thanks.

    Very nice work sir! great to see someone with knowledge of how to use a file, long forward strokes. check out my handsaw video on a tip to deepen the gullet between the teeth and allow for deeper file penetration. I work in a sharpening shop and your tip to bring the high teeth down to size is spot on!

    it was def inspiring and iim going to do this to my henery distton #5 saw. kinda disappointed that it has a plastic handel any idea why?

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  7 років тому

      If my quick research is correct, you may have somewhat of a rare-ish saw. Go to this link and look nearly at the bottom of the page. www.disstonianinstitute.com/quickglance.html I suspect what you have is a D-95 as I don't see anything referring to a #5.
