Wranglerstar is my favorite UA-cam channel of all time. I live out in the country. I can't afford satellite TV and there's no cable out here. I do have a decent Internet connection however, so I watch a lot of UA-cam. I haven't read all of the comments yet so I hope I'm not repeating something but hand filed saws,if done correctly, will always cut smoother than machine filed. Also, most new saws, unless they are made by a specialty company have too much set in the teeth. Keep the videos coming, and thanks for all you do. I don't know how you find the time.
Thanks Cody! I've got an old Disston saw i cleaned up a few years ago that needs filed. I Appreciate the information you provide as well as the care you take producing your videos. They are a joy to watch!
I just picked up a 26 inch (L) x 5 inch (D) Langdon Disston and Sons Mitre saw for $9.95 at one of my favorite thrift stores. Thanks for all the great information about getting it sharpened.
forgot to leave a comment on the how to sharpen a hand saw 1. love this series. would love to sharpen some of ours but never done it before. after watching this i'll probably give it a try. thanks
Lee Valley tools was founded in my hometown (and current town, I love seeing that a little Canadian Company that I grew up a block from is so loved internationally.
You ended this video at a horrible time, I was really getting into the relaxation mode with you and then boom the video ended and I was propelled back into reality... All kinds of horrible thoughts like working tomorrow and traffic on the way to work flashed before my eyes.. Hope you post the rest soon, I love these kind of videos!
The video gets going, I'm concentrating and then it's over, this is so interesting and made slightly better in that you are learning too. Look forward to the next instalment, the close up is close but illustrates the point well.
Acetone removes layout fluid. There is specific layout fluid remover with also has a bit of alcohol in it. Nail polish remover works as good as anything if you don't have the right stuff, just takes longer to work.
Thank you so much for this. I have been learning beside you for years, I am truly grateful for all the knowledge you've taken the time to share. I recently wanted to learn saw sharpening. I looked high and low to find a video on it, and honestly thought 'I wish Wranglerstar would do a video on it". You're the best :)
The trick with using a macro lens is to stop the aperture way down, to f/8 or smaller, to get a decent depth of field. You then need a lot of light and/or high ISO to get the exposure you want.
Wranglerstar, when your using your macro lenses if you run the shot left to right instead of “quartering away” the saw blade should stay more in focus. When the saw blade runs diagonal through the shot it increases the range of focal depth you have to get everything in focus but from the side the range from the lenses to the target stays mostly the same so you have more things in focus.
Even though you can sharpen all teeth from the same side and get the angle correct. The best results are to be had if you file every other tooth then file from the other side of the saw. During each stroke of the file you are filing the front of one tooth and the rear of the next tooth. The tooth leaning away from you will cut better while the tooth leaning toward you will chatter slightly thereby cutting less. If you file only from one side every other tooth will shorter than the one next to it. To demonstrate the cutting or chattering put a piece of thin metal in a vice and file a few stroke with the handle high then file with the handle lower. If you don't have Prussian Blue a quick spray on the teeth with flat black spray paint works well.
Very nice explanation of jointing the teeth. Will you be doing a part 3 on the sharpening? I am curious about the types of files and angles. Thank you.
I think shappening is going to help with the cut. To avoid tearout, the only thing that has ever woked well enough for me was a knife wall. But you're being really thorough, it must be cutting much faster now.
That is marking blue, Prussian Blue is used to compare two surfaces ie: smear Prussian Blue on a granite surface plate and then slide a precision piece over it, it will show hi and low spots.
Love my Veritas dovetail saw (identical to yours).... am torn between upgrading some beautiful vintage saws and just buying a new Veritas crosscut carcass saw and rip tenon saw from Lee Valley.
never said before but really love your intro music and intro. inspired mine. did u say what file you are using (coarse/fine). love your info. have so many saws like that that need sharpening. usually just buy a new one. may give it a go. looking forward to part 3.
I have a suggestion for a future video. Flea market find. You'd be great at picking out and explaining hidden gems in tool piles. I see stuff all the time that I have no clue what it is. Like that jointer. I'd have no idea. And most of the time the seller can't tell what old tools are either. Just a thought. How's my Basque axe by the way? When it's ready to come home, P.O.Box...
I've never done this before either so this is just a thougt. Obsessing over 1 or 2 low teeth with a jointer to might not pay off. The other teeth will pick up the slack. That 6th tooth might not have done a lot of cutting. It would still be almost sharp in that case. Why try to make a dull flat spot on it and then file it sharp again. If you joint to just above the 6th tooth than you would save some filing. The tricky part would be to have the newly filed points to end up at the same hight as nr. 6. If it's still low this time it will be OK next time.
You are forgetting one important step - laying out the spacing of the teeth. If the teeth are at different spacing from each other, that can account for the varying height of them. Use a very sharp layout awl and a small machinist's square. Take it from an old shop teacher who did it and taught sharping to students in another life. your videos are excellent. Could have used them when i was teaching. Chris
if the veritas is a dovetail saw, it gives tearout on cross cutting, it would be sharpened like a rip saw . it looks like that judging by the tearout.cheers.
Few know the sound of a freshly sharpened saw nor understand how much set a saw, for the given purpose, should have. A beautiful dovetail saw is very sharp and for wood of 5/8" or less, has no set at all. The hand that cuts the teeth is the same hand that pushes the blade, accurately.
Hi! I just look at that steel blue layout fluid on Amazon (Canada). Geez this stuff is expensive...Over $100 for a little 8 Oz container....Of course here in Canada we are getting gouged regularly for what is otherwise very affordable merchandises.... I guess I will keep on using Sharpies ...Much better for my wallet.
@6:47 "I might even start using this stuff on uh...I hope that comes off." lol now I'm curious to know what else you were thinking you'd use the prussian blue on.
Here's a suggestion for an addition to your workbench for when you do detailed work like filing. Aging eyes need a little help. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00UW2IRJ2

Mattigar I mean, I thought it was a joke the first time he said it, but then he kept saying it. Like, it didn't seem funny enough to bear repeating. He mixes up reflection and refraction, so it seemed reasonable that he might not even catch the mistake.
+JoeJoeTater He's been sarcastically calling his macro lens an "electron microscope" for years. Also the differences, verbally, between the usage of reflection vs refraction doesn't equal someone thinking a simple lens is an electron microscope. I assure you Cody knows the difference between a nice canon lens and an electron microscope. Lighten up geeeeeez.
+onebadboy2 In the first video he said that a German subscriber sent them too him. And on the sleeve it said "Dick", which is a German manufacturer. Here is the link: www.dick.de/en/files-and-rasps/products/precision-files-1
Man, he always mentions Paul, if you watched enough of his videos to make an informed opinion than perhaps you could save yourself some embarrassment next time.
I know it's not the end of the world but there is no "th" sound in height. For some reason it drives me crazy when it is pronounced that way. Height ends in a t and depth has the "th" sound. Even so I love the video.
Why would someone put a dislike on this video. The man has put up a good information . Why would you watch it , and dislike it.

You are to be admired for your courage in doing this for the first time on camera in front of hundred of viewers. Thank you for tackling this subject.
Thanks Cody! I've got an old Disston saw i cleaned up a few years ago that needs filed. I Appreciate the information you provide as well as the care you take producing your videos. They are a joy to watch!

Love these types of your videos. Love hearing you talk and explain, your passion is clear to hear and see.
I've never seen those tools before this series of video... Always learning something new from this channel! Thanks Cody.

Lee Valley tools was founded in my hometown (and current town, I love seeing that a little Canadian Company that I grew up a block from is so loved internationally.
+Drew Gorman I just got Lee Valley's big catalog last week and I'm trying to practice restraint. I'd be in trouble if they were just down the block.

Great video Cody.. Love the tool maintenance videos and really appreciate your video style/editing...makes it worth watching alone!
It looks to be turning out pretty good you got some pretty cool handy tools
Because of the narrow depth of field, subjects need to be kept parallel, not at an angle. Great video, and love the macro lense!
Thank you so much for this. I have been learning beside you for years, I am truly grateful for all the knowledge you've taken the time to share. I recently wanted to learn saw sharpening. Looking forward to #3. Want to see the real sharpening where you file and set the teeth. Thanks for making this.
Nice close up detail. Good information and patience explanation.
+David Powell Thank you
A little tip with macro, if you close down the camera aperture (increase the f/stop number) you'll get more depth of field
Holy cow your dull saw cuts much better than my new Stanley!

That micro lens is awesome.

basically sharpies are filled with layout fluid, its the same ink, blue, red or black. aceatone removes it, and good vid
I have a suggestion for a future video. Flea market find.

hey mr. W ... there is a machining channel (clickspring) that uses dykem all the time i think he uses rubbing alcohol to get rid of the blue after use
Wonder if the different height teeth were to help clean the kerf as you saw.Seems like they would do that well at a cost.
Your videos are a great alternative to anger management :) Thank you for all your hard work Cody
If i remember correctly, Mrs.W got the Veritas saw 2 Christmases ago? I think it had a small part in a video back then.
I've never done this before either so this is just a thougt. Obsessing over 1 or 2 low teeth with a jointer to might not pay off. The other teeth will pick up the slack. Nice macro work, it helped I think.

Chris
What would you recommend as a good all around saw that doesn't cost a fortune? Thanks!
My carpentry mentor always said to wax the saw blade to keep from binding if set wasn't perfect.
Good job!
if the veritas is a dovetail saw, it gives tearout on cross cutting, it would be sharpened like a rip saw . it looks like that judging by the tearout.cheers.
Boy, that sure is a handy tool.
Very satisfying video
A bug at 2:46 stole my attention 🤣

Rip saw means ripping, this saws are made for cutting dove tails, would have like to have seen diff in cutting a dove tail

here in the phil we used grinder for much eassier faster saw blade sharpening it just took gor 10 mnts very precise too
keith fenner, host of turn wright machine shop, youtube channel, uses a blue sharpie. might be cheaper. i've also seen a aerosol version.
Where did you end up getting the six sided file (what brand is it?) I remember you had so much trouble with the first set.
+appleman1999 Germany.
If that is the dovetail saw from Veritas (I have the same saw), Woodcraft.com sells it for $59.99.
close the aperture a little so your depth of field is bigger
Here's a suggestion for an addition to your workbench for when you do detailed work like filing. Aging eyes need a little help. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00UW2IRJ2
I may have missed where you got your files. I kow you had a hard time finding a good set. so where did you getthem
I like the Car Talk reference.
+COWs of Suffolk Click and Clack the Tappet Bros.
Wish i would have found this video years ago,i too am self taught, all my old saws are sharp as razors, cannot buy that quality any longer
good stuff
Rules for Husbands 1913 is a good book to have on the work bench.
Oh common!!!! how can you just stop there?? lol good show!

Solid Brass Screws........ WOW !
Yes,,,,, but he is perfecting his 'hand modeling' .... :-D
Can anyone tell me where I can buy single cut triangle files in Australia? I've started to restore some old axes and saws
Layout blue also comes red is not the same thing as prussian blue and they are not used for the same thing. the prussiah blue do not dry .
Maybe, Leave the handle on and trim the clamp to fit around it
if you made a knife wall, you'd have 0 tear out on both saws.
So, is it a joke that you keep calling your USB microscope an "electron microscope"?... because you keep saying it.
+JoeJoeTater Yes, lighten up a bit.
+JoeJoeTater yes, joke
Is it a joke that you're asking whether or not it's a joke?
Mattigar I mean, I thought it was a joke the first time he said it, but then he kept saying it. Like, it didn't seem funny enough to bear repeating. He mixes up reflection and refraction, so it seemed reasonable that he might not even catch the mistake.

i have to tell my grandfather about this because he has a dull handsaw that needs sharpening
4:36 you are supposed to commit butchery here, you are supposed to use a chisel.
should have know this would be a 3 parter or better. Lots of setup time.
thumbs up
Any ideas where I could order some of those saw files?
+Adam Salyers Lee Valley sells Bahco saw sharpening files. I like mine. I bought some Nicholson files and they were not even straight.
+Craig Farstad thanks!
are we going to be seeing a FFS axe sharpening video now you have a guide
+Jack Clare Very soon,
Where did you get those files Cody?
+Cole Wyatt +Anas Tziatas www.dick.de/en/files-and-rasps/products/precision-files-1 - I think that's what you are looking for.
I have the same questions on the files. Where did you finally find quality ones?
+onebadboy2 In the first video he said that a German subscriber sent them too him. And on the sleeve it said "Dick", which is a German manufacturer. Here is the link: www.dick.de/en/files-and-rasps/products/precision-files-1
+onebadboy2 www.pferd.com
+Anas Tziatas Think Cody mentioned the maker is Pferd. German company, so would guess Dick is a seller.
I would be happy if you say a couple of words about master Paul Sellers while you present his techniques.
+MrDokank I did mention him in this series. I frequently refer to him in videos. He's great.
Man, he always mentions Paul, if you watched enough of his videos to make an informed opinion than perhaps you could save yourself some embarrassment next time.
Cody, please, please, please use a file handle with your files. A file tang pushed into the Palm is no laughing matter.
how do i directly contact you?

oops, ignore my last comment that I just deleted, was writing a comment for the last video I was watching and it posted on this instead lol
Manly manners from last Video very relevant as I have today my 24th wedding day and living 5 Miles from Dick Fine Tools (yr Files). :)
From The Fatherland.
