Denmark's 'student salary', the ultimate remedy to undergraduate poverty?

  • In recent weeks, students in France have been protesting against rising living costs, while over in the UK, many support the Labour Party's campaign promise to scrap university tuition fees and bring back student grants. A similar system is currently in place in Denmark. Students there get free tuition, plus €750 a month. Those from other EU countries are eligible too, provided they also work for around eleven hours a week. Our reporter Alix Le Bourdon met a British student who moved to Denmark two years ago to benefit from this generous but expensive system.

1:40 "It allows us to live not as poor students, of course we are not rich students..." actually these conditions are incomparably privileged to other students' living standards worldwide.

If denmark cannot pay for all fellow european students who want to study there, how can Germany pay for millions of refugees grants, training, housing etc?

Interesting... Why would Denmark even pay other nation's students? Perhaps they hope these students will eventually stay in Denmark? Still, if I'm a Danish citizen, I don't think I will be happy my taxes are used for students from other countries.

@Lord Lolland My understanding was that no EU country actually follows all the rules of EU. I really think your politicians should play bolder. Or, elect politicians who will fight for own citizen.

    • @vrenak

We only paid for nordic students until the EU ruled otherwise, and it worked fine with the other nordic countries because they have very similar schemes, and they paid for our students there, and due to our cultural similarity there was a high probability of students staying after ending studies, so if there was any cost at all, it was tiny, and well worth it to further nordic integration and cooperation. Now many EU students from outside the nordic area are not staying on, and the whole model of this system is dependent on them paying it all back through their taxes afterwards, so the brit, that is planning on staying, that'll work out just fine in his case. But those that go back home as soon as they're finished are essentially stealing money from the state.

To my understanding a not insignificant amount of international students (I found one source saying as low as 40%) stay in Denmark after graduation, which is both provides a huge net profit for the overall economy, if they stay, and it is a large boost to the concept of a shared European identity. (which i as a danish citizen support)

vrenak not sure what people thinking of such people, who reap the benefit without ever paying back. smart? or smart ass? i personally thinking they are trash. believe me the world is so full of them to a degree it’s considered normal.

Some stay, and provide a big benefit to Denmark. Those who leave we think will have a fond memberance of Denmark, who knows, one of them could be a future Elon Musk, Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. But the main reason is that we want our student to be exposed to other cultures while they are at college. The knowledge and friendships with many different cultures and nationalities, is a big boon.

we have a system where if you come from a poor family you will get more, than if you come from a rich. And the rich people pay way more in taxes than the poor people do. So dont worry that rich kids parents will pay your medical bills some day in denmark.

Lol rich kids don't get paid like that buddy. Example I have a single parent and I lived alone so I got $1000 a month, my best friend was living at his parents and they are kinda wealthy working as architect and medicine production and earned 8000-9000 usd a month each, he was paid $100 a month. You get paid more if you live by yourself, live far from your parents and if your parents make more than a certain amount..... People that live alone, live far from their parents, and have a lower income parent/s get paid more. They don't just give everyone $1000 come on now how smoothbrained do you think we are.

He said mainly, not all. Also oral exams are way harder, cause they can ask questions at anytime, and there are 3 people present to drill you. 1 teacher, from the very subject you present on and whom you know. A teacher at the college you might know, and a sensor, a completely indifferent party from another college that you have never met. These 3 people will ask you, and try to slip you up to see if you just memorised a text, or actually know what you are talking about.

@Urlas Hedout Right lol, our Economy is better than ever, and poverty doesn't really exist in DK. Even on welfare you get close to twice as much as a minimum wage worker in the US. But that wasn't the point, the point is that we shouldn't pay for USA's aggression and wargames all over the world, while we in reality get nothing in return but dead countrymen.
