Ah brother, I was in your shoes. I was far more fortunate than you, but I could have been in a worse situation than yours if the dice rolled in an even slightly different way. I've had to spend a year in a hospital taking care of a relative suffering with heart failure. I've had a lot of my prejudices reinforced by the last two years. There is no democracy as you or I would have understood it, as we were taught. There are no rights. There is no legal system. There are privileges that you are entitled to as long as it's convenient for your government and there are just arms of enforcement of the "law". There's a few things I've learned though. There are no heroes, just people trying to make it by. Depending on or expecting others to take care of a situation correctly will end in disaster. At several points my family member would have died due to negligence on the part of hospital staff if I wasn't watching like a hawk and intervened. Trust should be earned, not given freely. I will never take the word of any "expert", "professional", or otherwise government licensed shabbas goy at face value again. Take care, praying your situation has turned for the better since then.
