Edit/TLDR: Arjan is right that we face this dilemma- GMOs can feed people better under the current food regimes. Whether they will become necessary in the short term depends on how fast we can think outside the box and turn things around. Long term there is no reason all nations can't have reasonable agency over their own sustenance if we take seriously the power and responsibility to 'reverse' the Green Revolution. /edit The talk about feeding population is unpleasant but who here thought Arjan didn't think this way? The true task is building agency in agriculture that doesn't rely on European or American intellectual property to succeed. Of course it's more complicated politically and economically than some outspoken activists care to learn about, but they are right that an equitable world cannot exist when an African country will starve without access to Dutch technology. And sadly Arjan's perspective puts little faith in global food systems change, despite saying he's spent much of his life working with poor farmers. The reason this makes people so angry is that the 'poor conditions' were created by European colonial agriculture and continue through fertilizer, seed, and other agribusiness which serves great economic benefit to foreign enterprises while displacing or starving local populations upfront and destroying native diversity and soil fertility. And while Arjan may not be responsible for this, as a Dutchman these systems have provided him many benefits while poor farmers continue paying most of the cost. While its clear he makes more effort to repair conditions than most people, he is also in an extremely unique position to do so, and upon closer examination these relationships can be hard to distinguish from exploitative ones. We have to remember that younger folks have had far, far more access to information than those 35-40+ such that various political and economic rhetoric has been explored with far deeper context than was ever possible. The role of academic institutions in shaping such rhetoric is thus shifting and much of the reaction comes from younger folks recognizing historically oppressive rhetoric at face value. So when someone says that overpopulation will starve people without GMOs we recognize centuries old rhetoric of Thomas Paine, the Green Revolution, and the ways this rhetoric was/is used to maintain power dynamics and exploitative agricultural models. Here's two historical examples which have helped shift my perspective: Take the Romans and Northern Africa. Remember in history class hearing about how Romans conquered North Africa for trade routes? Or the reasons for it's demise? Probably no mention of wheat. Yet much of North Africa was a vegetative oasis before being cleared to produce endless crops of wheat for export. Eventually the landscape collapsed into a desert, quite possibly the primary reason for the fall of Rome (soil salinity and infertility across the empire). Of course the British did this in India many centuries later, allowing plant disease to run rampant such that GMOs were necessary to prevent immediate famine. And so the legacy of exploiting resources from poor nations and feigning charity by throwing back the scraps in the form of jobs, miniscule profit margins, and technology can be seen globally today. Consider also the strawberry fields of Egypt which allow me to have a smoothie in February at the cost of food agency among Egyptians farmers and people. These are the issues that are pertinent to responsible agriculture and substituting complacent rhetoric for deep engagement is not enough to appease people who are passionate about food systems. People who do not envision radical systemic change are understandably considered hostile to this goal, but with some negative consequences. Many younger people are simply naive to real world complexities and the effort required to induce systemic change. My goal is generally to find common ground and work towards understanding because I know it will take massive effort, not polarization and fracturing. @future cannabis project @strain hunters

Canada may be legal but soon enough we’re going to be at the back of the pack. Despite having had years of analysis and they’ve seen that it’s only helped the Canadian economy but still they treat it like a forbidden good. You still can’t have coffee shops and you’re still limited in how much you can buy. Alcohol sales are unlimited and are still causing hundreds of deaths in drunk driving accidents. As more countries come online with legalization many are ready ahead of Canada in terms of restrictions on local industries. Small micro growers are having a hell of a time in Canada and likely the overregulation will be the death of many family farms. I live in northern Canada so auto flowers are the future for outdoor growing here. This year I was able to harvest quarter pound producing auto flowers that made for some excellent hash production. Because we’re so far north, The smoke profile I don’t think it’s as good as indoor of the same kind but the hash it produces is very good
I'd say the current state of genetics in Jamaica makes a pretty good case that modern hybrid lines definitely dilute, and in some cases destroy the local gene pool.
They chose to out grow the local genetics,. Only reason it's like that is cuz what the people want. Local wild genetics will always outgrow and lock out our inbread lines. Unless the people continue to choose diff

That should be your choice. For home growers like me feminized genetics have allowed me to be introduced to plants from around the world. I’ve been active in online communities and had people send me feminized seeds from Africa Asia North America South America and I feel like I’ve grown things that I may have never of tried in my life if it weren’t for feminized seeds. Limited space means I can only do one plant of new strains and can’t afford to lose space to males.

I wish some professional breeders ah hum....in house...ah hum HSO would stop the hype and get some quality material for a better price per seed pack. It's true though that here in the US (at least in CA) clones of super quality genetics from REPUTABLE breeders are easily available to grow out commercially or use in breeding projects.
I'm also a breeder its amazing how there's 10-15 strains being released every year. It takes me multiple years to stabilize a strain. Let alone releasing genetics to the public.

That’s because Greenhouse is a big factor is losing landrace genetics. They go into a place, take the landrace and give them Dutch genetics. Now they have the only pure strain and the locals have watered down seed stock now.
Especially a seed bank that will make millions of dollars but pays the farmers who have the genetics a few hundred at most. They don’t sign any kind of fair agreements with the people who they take these genetics from. Even like 1% royalty would be monumental to the farmers.
Would it be fair to say that the plants that are best suited for the environment are the best examples of cannabis. The cannabis that resist the local pest, grows the best in the worst conditions of the area, (the shaded or worst soil). The plants that have been able to adapt to the land and environment the best would be the best example of a landrace?

I have over 2500 different seeds from all over the world. I've spent the last 26 years of my life hunting genetics......bad thing is il never work all the lines!
How does taking a few seeds from remote regions and selling them elsewhere affect the original product? You want the original? Go to the source, get the dozens of connections required, passports and travel logistics, thousands of dollars towards a trip to grab a seed you could order from them in the mail. What's ur thought process here? Would love to know
@@B01 they trade seeds with locals for landrace seeds. Locals Then breed/pollinate the Landrace with new genetics. After a few years it’s no longer close to what it once was. Then the Seed Bank goes home and makes more IBL/Landrace seeds and becomes the only source for the original. Not to mention they make Feminized seeds so they’re sterile for the most part. I’m not against selling and profiting at all, they deserve it. It’s just depriving the farmers and the world of another Landrace and making more bottleneck genetics. Happened in Jamaica
Well I was gonna go dam again once lockdown is over but hey looks like I’ll be staying in the uk now if I’m not allowed in coffee shops because I’m a “ tourist” Tbf we have as good bud in the uk now so dam is screwed if they stop all tourist money coming in.

Why the hell not lol? Even in this shithole you can do better than greenhouse. Find the strain you want, then find out who has the real version and buy theirs. If you are impressed with what you are getting now, id love to see your face having grown some strong genetics instead of that mass produced, overhyped and pretend named then copywrited international business. A good tip generally is avoid the dutch, they dont like weed that smells so that should worry you. Think arjan even stole exodous cheese if i remember rightly. Its not though is it. Just some shitty diluted skunk at best and "just a name" (so why use that particular name then arjan?). You dont have to listen to me but your advocting this company in public should be called out before someone wastes their money after reading it.
@@buefed.tjustice6688 Respect, I used to love their super lemon haze but even that changed. They got famous off a couple other strains also then the breeder took the mothers when they fell out but greenhouse just kept the name(s) and pretended the still had it (think that was white widow or something)-the original went to mr nice (shantibaba) and had to be re named black widow instead because of copyright!! plus greenhouse really rips off the local farmers when collecting landraces and purposely dilutes their genepool with their dutch crap. giving a farmer 50 odd quid whilst bragging how rich it will make them. I think they are most likely into patenting the gentics nowadays (fairly common) though that is speculation. they should be buying up patents in the farmers name if they want to contribute, he just wants to be a monopoly so no doubt he is trying to hoard it all. Except they are more interested in a big catalogue than actual legitimate and stable/worked cultivars. Thanks for not taking offence mate, good luck.
@@buefed.tjustice6688 It is generally good advice to steer clear of breeders that have that big catalogue. That is too many strains to work properly. Not breeding, just pollen chucking- which is fine but pollen chuckers tend to have better genetics to trade off with the fact that the lines are unstable. The greenhouse coffeshop is a tourist trap also, they're like the asda of weed. It was my own observation that quite a few of their strains are basically the same also so the parent stock is not as varied as they'd have you believe. things may change but it's never usually for the better with these types. Peace

@Ethix Genetix Dutch genetics rekt the local African races. No one will ever smoke the Swazi gold I smoked back in the day. Every thing is cross pollinated in Swaziland. Clones are best in preserving land races

As if James brought Arjan on. I thought he was being nice when he said they were friends.....lol. This is awesome (I am making this comment before starting to view so we will see if this reinforces my opinion on Arjan or not)
So ?
@@jamescooksfood I mean, I appreciate that u bring people from all over the cannabis breeding world. I'm still not a fan of Arjan, but I'm not gonna hate on the man. Good episode brotha!🤘🤙💯🖖✌️
@@jamescooksfood Arjans a douche

I would rather a stable cultivar even if it takes longer to breed

One of the best guests by far! Them and SunGrownMidz
Colloidal silver is the same thing as nano silver but if you are talking about Monoatomics it's Monoatomic Gold ORMUS/ormes orbitally rearranged monoatomic elements you want extracted from sea salt blends not monoatomic silver.
where can i learn more about this thanks
I have over 2500 different seeds from all over the world. I've spent the last 26 years of my life hunting genetics......bad thing is il never work all the lines!
Ill take some of ur hands.
@@chriscastro1176 I only have 2 hands and I would like to keep them. Lol
@@thetruthmanification meant off instead of of.
I'll run some
I appreciate the offer but I'm needing to pop these in a commercial breeding operation. Along with using Medicinal Genomics to map the DNA sequence.
This guest 👎. The destroyer of landrace, unless you buy from me
How does taking a few seeds from remote regions and selling them elsewhere affect the original product?
Happened in Jamaica
arjab looks like a broke a55 Bono haha
how about portugal, i think portuguese people have ifluece spreading canabis on the world
Well I was gonna go dam again once lockdown is over but hey looks like I’ll be staying in the uk now if I’m not allowed in coffee shops because I’m a “ tourist” Tbf we have as good bud in the uk now so dam is screwed if they stop all tourist money coming in.
i always thought durban poison was durban landrace x god bud or something like that.. dutch treat.
Best podcast episode !!
Big respect ✊ to Arjan !! 👌❤️🙏
General hydro does powders now. So he was trying to rail road arjian lol
Amsterdam coffee shop herb is terrible compared to American herb.
American herb is a very broad term. Not all herb is created equally.
I would say western produced cannabis from Canada down to California has been the best cannabis I’ve ever had. Europe has its taste but in terms of levels they are a full step below.
The Native American way is the most harmonious way to live with the Earth especially with 10 Billion people leaving on it..(Magnet power is the cleanest power their is so we should switch to that atleast)
Arjan you should make a Dutch Cheese line like ChedderCheeze MAC and Mozzarella Sour Skunk or some shiz haha =)
If Kevin jodrey was Benjamin button upper right-hand corner
You guys should Hugelkultur..with the logs burred under the Earth below the plants, the logs hold the water alot longer so you don't have to really ever water.
Rrr..mattie... hell yeah.. out in California they thought I was crazy for burying logs in the soil.

Peace luv an respect,Franko, for the first 10 year of growing I wouldnt use any seeds but greenhouse seeds they where and are the best range of lots of great strains R.I.P RESPECT 💯🇬🇧🇬🇧💚❤💚❤💚✌🤘✊👊🇬🇧🇬🇧💯
@@vacantspaced3930 well I my not use them again and thanks for the advice mate I will be looking into this, thanks again ☯️👍
Peace
Marcus who ? Rishardson
I have that bobble head
you destroyed the landraces of today, disgraceful.
Fr svp
I have been growing over 40 years! I wouldn't buy seed from these guys...
They are not that good and greedy.! Not worth it.

Arjan your fertilizers would be good in compost tea brews I bet.

reg seeds kill landraces... quality FEMs preserve while giving a great new smoke experience and sensi ... i never had even a shit fem seed herm and i stress so much. and they get lst phenos and less genotype pools in those phenos... so i can get that champion cut.
@Ethix Genetix ye nah
You mean males from your reg pack pollinating the local land races?
@Ethix Genetix If youre not a breeder why would you keep your males?
@Ethix Genetix Dutch genetics rekt the local African races. No one will ever smoke the Swazi gold I smoked back in the day. Every thing is cross pollinated in Swaziland.
Clones are best in preserving land races
@Ethix Genetix Never found a herm or a male in fem packs I mostly buy regs from Capulator,Oni,In-house I rate regs are better in my experience.
I get Fems from Ethos, barneys, dutchpassion, sensi, seedsman, and Autos from Mephisto, fastbuds.
Only shit genetics herm.
