I saw them live back in the late 70s when they were still touring for their first album. They played everything on it including this, and also some tracks from their upcoming second album. It was the most awesome rock concert I ever saw.
"Shooby dooby dooby Doo-waa" - the Wisdom of Sinatra coming from a speedpunk metal fire drill of a song. Who else but Van Halen? Merry Shoobin' Christmas!
That entire first album is worth a reaction! Ground breaking stuff, this album helped set up the 80s, huge influence on many bands to come. From the same album, do another banger, Atomic Punk. Killer, enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶🔥
One of the things I love about Roth era Van Halen is that their music was always up beat, and always puts me in a good mood. This is partially why I loved the 80's, it was about having a good time, and excessive musical talent. R.I.P. King Edward.
I loved your reaction as usual. The fact that this might be your favorite Van Halen so far only reconfirms to me that you should probably listen to everything on their first album. Like Boston, this is one of those incredible debut albums. I swear every song on it and the album itself just played constantly on FM radio and at the park and at party spots and at the pool and at your house and your friends places and you name it. In terms of rock, it just felt so new world in cutting edge at the time and it was just balls to the wall rock when it wanted to be. But also from this first album is Little Dreamer, which is a fan favorite ballad of theirs, and it's a total banger as well.
I was a freshman in high school when this album came out. There was nothing like it. It totally blew everyone away. "You really got me" was pplayed on about every rock radio station around the clock. back then. They became known almost immediately. And that's really hard back then because there was no internet and no cable TV. All you had was radio to keep you up to date on whats going on in music.
I am 57 and remember the day my best friend called me after school and told me I had to come over and listen to this new band Van Helen's record his brother bought. We must have listened to the record 20 times, I dont think big brother ever got that record back. 😅
There will never be another Eddie Van Halen. He was the greatest guitar player to have ever lived and it goes far beyond the famed two hand tapping. He was a wizard of guitar work from building his own guitars to find the sounds and tone he was trying to create, to using whatever was available for sonic destruction. His speed, his innovations of dipping humbucking pickups in wax to deaden the electrical buzzing, to the quarter under the Floyd Rose tremolo to level out the bridge to his rhythm master playing and blistering solos, harmonics, dive bombs, whammy bar tricks…he not only created legions of guitar players to follow in his wake, he can single handedly be credited with the super Strat guitar business. Companies were not producing Strat style guitars with humbucking pickups like they were after he made Frankie. The simple act of cutting in a PAF humbucker and wedging it in the routed out cavity of the Charvel Strat body changed guitars forever.
1978, I was a freshman/sophomore in High School. the rock albums that came out that year were phenomenal. It was a great time to be a teenager. I lived 60 miles from Philadelphia/NY/and Atlantic City. Concerts were cheap! and a train was $10 bucks to each.
Same exact timeframe as well. So many good tunes that came out then and continued on up to the start of MTV. I was able to see some of the good ones too.
Funny that you go from Frank Sinatra to Van Halen. Ironically, Frank Sinatra appeared a video with Dave an Eddie, the song - LA, is my Lady, worth checking out!! Now go check out the song - House of pain - epic meter for a rock song
I remember when this album came out, everyone went out and purchased the album. Hearing Eddie Van Halen play the guitar the way he did blew everybody's mind. I like Van Halen 2 a little bit more, but not much more. Great album.
I saw VH on their first headlining tour for "II". On their previous tour, they opened for Black Sabbath. It is rumored that it was a major reason they sacked Ozzy!
roth sunk the band because he was a terrible live performer and I boycott any band that isn't better live than their albums ! also his arrogance and ego make him a pompous jerk that makes me wonder how anyone could stand him !
That guitar was done in one take! "I'm The One" and there can only be one...and that one is VAN HALEN 🔥🎸🔥🎸🔥🎸🔥🎸🔥🎸
One of the greatest rock guitar recordings ever made
My all-time favorite song from my all-time favorite album from my all-time favorite band. 🎸
Entire album is all killer no filler
The Alex Van Halen shuffle on drums

Their first tour was sick and a shock to the music industry.
You're a lucky guy. I didn't get to see them till later on, but I always thought that first album nothing compared massive Macho shredding and singing
I was in high school…. I’ll never ever forget what THIS energy did to this kid 😎. Thank you bro
Me too, freshman year. Nothing compares to that first album.
"Shooby dooby dooby Doo-waa" - the Wisdom of Sinatra coming from a speedpunk metal fire drill of a song.
Who else but Van Halen?
Merry Shoobin' Christmas!
And I'll throw in the bop-ba-dah's fer free!
A great song! EVH (and the rest) recorded the song in a single take (no overdubs), like most of the songs off their first and second albums.
This takes me all the way back to the beginning in '78, and it STILL kicks my 61 year old ass every time I hear it!
Fvckin' aye, right?!

That old VH stuff is basically metal... It still stands up today and absolutely blew our minds back then.
Ya got to check out the first album completely bro… trust me 😎💪
VH1 is the stuff of legend
Good tune. One of their best for sure🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎸

You forgot to mention the VARIAC he used to max out his tubes on that Marshall Plexi he had.
King of hyperbole, ain't ya?
@ just another mindless troll

John, your face was saying it all!!! That was fabulous. Merry Christmas!!

Still kicks the crap out of most music of today. This is why EVH was such a major influence to guitar players worldwide.
I lovvvvvve Ed's harmonics on this
Pardon my language but "FUCKING AWESOME"!!!!

I saw VH on their first headlining tour for "II". On their previous tour, they opened for Black Sabbath. It is rumored that it was a major reason they sacked Ozzy!

The Mighty Van Halen! How about those drums! Eddie isn't too shabby on the guitar either.
