    I count it one of the highlights of my life when Ronnie came to my home to listen to some records he had just bought while on tour. We stayed in touch for a few years, but sadly not up until the time of his untimely death. It just broke my heart. His birthday is tomorrow. He would be 69. He had an angel's voice. Too bad he didn't just do R&B; but his promotors just kept packaging him in pop/rock. If you want a good example of his voice in its purity, listen (in UA-cam) to the song in Hair "What a Piece of Work is Man." It's a duet, and he is given almost all of the solo parts of the song-and it is obvious why.

    SOUL TRAIN vs. AMERICAN BANDSTAND
    In 1973, Dick Clark, who dominated TV for teens with American Bandstand, felt threaten as Soul Train’s popularity grew. American Bandstand began to lose its black audience, so he tried to have Don Cornelius’ Soul Train taken off the air and replaced with his own knockoff, Soul Unlimited.
    Clark’s power move outraged black political leaders who along with the black community believed that having a black-owned show on television was not only cool, but an extension of the civil rights movement.
    Led by Chicago’s Reverend Jesse Jackson, they contacted Clark and ABC executives to protest. The idea that Clark, with whom blacks had always had an uneasy relationship, could kill Soul Train led to threats of an ABC boycott.
    Black leaders were joined by one of the most powerful men in the history of the black music business-and also a consultant to ABC, Clarence Avant, who went ballistic when he learned about Clark’s power move.
    After too much pressure, ABC finally caved and cancelled Soul Unlimited.

    To bad Don Cornelius had this show shut down.

    • @hevyonez97
      @hevyonez97 3 роки тому +1

      Don had no choice but to have it rightfully shut down, made no sense for Dick Clark to create a soul music show to compete with Soul Train when Dick was already doing just fine with American Bandstand...and as much as I'll always love Dick and Don on an equal level, Dick was wrong for trying to corner the market on hot music shows which were basically geared toward younger audiences...the black audience needed a show like Soul Train with a black host to fully capture the essence to culture of soul music in the 70s...otherwise, Dick had no problems getting black artists on AB if they had a nice big hit that the Mainstream audiences were familiar with, but doing a separate show of black music was like taking money out of Don's pockets and that just wasn't right, business wise...in the end, having both AB and Soul Train balanced each other out and made legends out of both men who are no longer with us...

    • @kjk7611
      @kjk7611 3 роки тому

      @@hevyonez97 But The DON stole the concept for SOUL TRAIN from a local Chicago teen dance show patterned after AMERICAN BANDSTAND. Cornelius wanted to partner-up w/ it's producer. It's creator w/dn't. So Cornelius cloned his show & rebranded it as SOUL TRAIN. And SOUL UNLIMITED made every bit of since 💲wise for Dick Clark.
