Its just something fun he did at a show for everyone to sing along to. Everyone loves this song and its entertaining its not like he recorded it and started selling it to show how much of a badass he is(I'm not saying he is or isn't). He just played it for fun stop hating.
I agree with you, to a point. This cover is great, makes the song creepy sounding. Makes the song sound as scary as its lyrics intend it to be. And you're right about this not being comparable to the original... But only because the original is legendary in its greatness. Neither you, nor I, nor anyone can take that away, nor can we make it any better or worse than it really is.
If you don't want to be mean, don't say things like "this guy sucks on guitar", or call him a "cheap guy". I'll assume you haven't seen any of his other stuff.
I just have to say it's the chord progression be it what it may. I like Death Cab as well, but I don't really like this cover either. It's one of those I-can't-believe-he-would-cover-that-with-that-style covers.
bland? are you kidding? it's a no-brainer that this song was obviously not meant to be done on one instrument, especially not guitar. most of Gibbard's covers have taken a basic approach which is completely understandable because an artist never wants to out-play someones song.
okay so ben gibbard doesn't destroy great music. he creates it. then again i have to agree this isn't really his style. i mean it's not bad on its own but going by the originaly its not one of his best.
Miley cyrus is in no way as talented as Ben Gibbard. Yes, Nick Drake was amazing all around and Ben may not be an Elliott Smith, or Nick Drake, but he isn't far off. I realize airtime does not mean an artist is good. This theory holds true, FOR ME, just in listening to the radio. So yes, airtime doesnt = GOOD. but in this case, it is a perfectly accurate argument. ALSO, i did not use airtime as the only reason. He has multiple albums in TWO bands, not to mention solo stuff.
Haha this is hilarious. Thriller was originally "played" by a bunch of fake instruments in the first place. I don't think those crappy old drum machines are very offended by Ben Gibbard playing their tunes :-P Given that, this isn't like, more high brow or low brow than the original really. The singer probably just intended to surprise people at the beginning.
It sucks that a person isn't allowed to dislike it without some buttwad jumpin' down his or her throat about it. I just thought it was just ok...unleash the downward turned thumbs. Who cares...
he must be, to be signed in TWO major bands...yeah he sucks. his music is played on radio and tv, and thousands attend his concerts....yeah he must be horrible...good call.
i heard this when i was a teenager and i have been looking for it for YEARS! thank you
a whole new interpretation of a classic. this is how you do a cover
i love this. i think ben is the only person that can pull off this song acoustically. i don't think i've heard a more enjoyable cover than this :)
this gave me chills
Michael touched sooo many peoples hearts and influenced so many
god bless you Michael
Michael touched so many people...
i didn't notice a difference between this and the original, spot on ben, great job.
I'm obsessed with this
Same
Hahaha! This is one of the coolest things I've seen/heard in my whole life.

Ben's delivery invests the song with more meaning than I ever thought it had
True as that all may be, one can not deny the musical genius of Ben. I am not considering him a legend by any means, but he is certainly gifted.
He has lyrics on his guitar - that is genius! why have I never done that?
"You hear the door slam"
*CLAP*
...awesome.
oh man, this is CLASSIC!!
I freaking love this. Way to go, Gibbard.
my absolute favorite song writer
i love him and i love this song... so good
I love Ben and I love his dorky folk, read-the-lyrics cover ^_^
I agree with you, to a point.
This cover is great, makes the song creepy sounding. Makes the song sound as scary as its lyrics intend it to be.

Wow he made it work, I saw the title of the cover song and said huh what? But he pulled it off rather well.
Its not a tribute. It was made 5/9/07, two years prior to his death. It is a cover. I do however like DCFC and Postal Service.
Also, the way that girl plays the song suits her style of music.
The way Ben plays the song suits his style of music. It works perfectly.
Hooray, now I can understand the lyrics!
If you don't want to be mean, don't say things like "this guy sucks on guitar", or call him a "cheap guy".
I'll assume you haven't seen any of his other stuff.
i love this
ben gibbard is amazing...
haha, i was there.. i had just bought a copy of "thriller" on vinyl, too. how appropriate
Awesome!
I cried the day he died and wrote the song to relay a message. The song is A ROCKIN' ROBIN HAS PASSED AWAY
Steve Bruce
Thanks for the nice Hallowe'en/Samhain treat.
The tears just arent coming.
OMG I LOVE THIS COVER :)
@paperinotregua no, there are more covers of thriller out there ^_^
"What's the next line again?"
Excellent.
i wish i could have made it to that concert
woooooooooooooooooooo ben!!!!!!!!
This is awesome! Specially when he stops to read the lyrics, haha
how do you NOT know the lyrics to that song?
I like it, it's pretty cool.. in the way.
He was reading them off the top of his guitar, give him a break.
never knew that thriller in acoustic is that dope
what a fucking GENIUS!
Damn you Gibbard!
this is hilarious. i love it. i think i'm going to try to learn it immediately. XD
this version really shows how good of a songwriter Rod Temperton is.
I bet he'd dig it if he heard it
is this the death cab for cutie guy?
I just have to say it's the chord progression be it what it may. I like Death Cab as well, but I don't really like this cover either. It's one of those I-can't-believe-he-would-cover-that-with-that-style covers.
tacojohn69- Its called an interpretation. And a really good one, imho.
Damn, I was expecting him to belt the chorus.
What song did he do after Thriller?
He writes the songs...
what acoustic guitar does he use?
Agreed.
omg. i have the same looking guitar!
you probably have not listened to any of his other stuff. this is a cover, Ben Gibbard is amazing.
Who Gibbard or Jackson? lol
Thanksgiving's here :-) cheers!
right um, michael jackson didn't write thriller. so there's that.
bland? are you kidding? it's a no-brainer that this song was obviously not meant to be done on one instrument, especially not guitar. most of Gibbard's covers have taken a basic approach which is completely understandable because an artist never wants to out-play someones song.
i think it's "what's the next chord there"
okay so ben gibbard doesn't destroy great music. he creates it. then again i have to agree this isn't really his style. i mean it's not bad on its own but going by the originaly its not one of his best.
He is death cab.
oh gotcha
preach it
agreed
Personally I like Michael Jackson better but this is pretty sweet just the same, especially considering he's reading off of his guitar.
you hear the door slam *clap*
lol
How so?
RIP
i know me neither
and everyone is like there the same thing
but their still good
but like you said
its just not my thing
i shot this video.
Then check out Emily Elbert's cover... it's great :-)
lol that was AWSOME
@SlaineAdhseidh Not anymore. ='(

divorced
no...him and 3 or 4 other dudes are death cab
hahaha he keeps the lyrics on the floor like i do :) i
Delicious.
"....what's the next word..."
"this guy sucks on guitar (at least in this song)"
I said, at least in this song.
hating? what.
Please make a better acoustic cover and show us.
Was.
i hope there is no Fall Out Boy fans
this is a great cover
not like theirs
the fuckin killed
Micheal's songs
Haha this is hilarious.

Given that, this isn't like, more high brow or low brow than the original really.

oh yeah haha your right. thats even better
Man, you people fight too much over very trivial things.
XD
It sucks that a person isn't allowed to dislike it without some buttwad jumpin' down his or her throat about it. I just thought it was just ok...unleash the downward turned thumbs. Who cares...
I don't know why I should hate this guy more. Because he is painfully talented or because he is married to Zooey Deschanel.
lol at Zooey's hub
original pwns
that doesn't make sense.
thats funny
Ben Gibbard took this song, flattened it, and turned it into a 5 minutes constant drone.
Flame away Death Cab groupies, flame away.
he does look like Colin, but Ben is way whinier.
Ben, you have thoroughly butchered these lyrics. I am disappoint.
haha no! Zooey is much more gorgeous
nay.
he must be, to be signed in TWO major bands...yeah he sucks. his music is played on radio and tv, and thousands attend his concerts....yeah he must be horrible...good call.
