Students learned about rhetoric, rhetorical situations, genres and genres conventions, audiences, and aspects of the class theme, convergence culture. The course theme ("convergence culture") allowed students to approach different composing tasks (often with a media component) from the perspective of "fandom." That is, different parts of the course emphasized different elements of fandom. Topics such as “participatory culture,” “knowledge communities,” “transmedia storytelling,” and “transformative works” were approached through source media such as BTS, Star Wars, Marvel, and Harry Potter. Through the theme, students developed their skills in critical text analysis and production. In this case, they analyzed the BTS music videos’ transmedia storytelling and considered how that transmedia storytelling is engaged by various knowledge communities creating a “participatory culture” by “making meaning.” (Essentially, how the theories keep the fandom actively thinking and engaged with BTS's music. Big Hit's team does this extremely well, and so BTS is a good example.) In terms of learning outcomes, students were taking theory, applying it analytically, then clearly articulating their thoughts regarding how the different modes were utilized by the Big Hit production team and how that inspired conversation within the fandom. (As an ARMY, I recognized the way that the fandom was "activated" in a sense through circulation between various media platforms and how the storytelling of BTS's discography [including songs and MVs] continuously cultivated conversation within the fandom.) As for this reaction video, we discussed genre, circulation, and distribution. Essentially, how fandoms circulate content across media platforms and how that ultimately impacts the creation and distribution of texts in today’s world. “Reaction videos” have certain genre conventions. That is to say that there are elements that you see in a vast majority of reaction videos-- camera angles, tones, lighting, even backgrounds. Together, we watched several reaction videos and put our observations into action by creating our own reaction video. (Just as students might do in the future when creating other texts within their respective fields.) Likewise, we also spoke to reaction video producers to get their perceptions regarding their own reaction vids. Students chose different elements of the reaction video genre to opt-into and opt-out-of, which we thought would impact the circulation of the reaction video. Back when we had less than 1,000 views, students analyzed the data provided by UA-cam to see how our adherence to or departure from convention impacted the way the media circulated. (This was meant to put theory into actual practice and we never anticipated receiving as many views as we have, but this video’s circulation demonstrates what was discussed in class.) Students considered everything from the visual lack of response to the intriguing eye-catching title to the genuine-ness of the reaction, often placing that into the frame of rhetoric (emotional appeal, logical appeal, ethical appeal). Not to mention, hopefully, they had some fun doing it and tracking the data. Essentially, these activities were meant to cultivate skills and knowledges, which would then help students to explore topics critically within their particular disciplines as they advance further in their studies.
