I have so many Acers and this is one of them. Mr. Maple sent to a nice one about 4ft tall. I planted in a raised bed on a corner and it is leafing out already. Very healthy and doesn't get too much sun either as it is in the side of the garden. All my soil is compost.
don’t forget to check for the root flare before planting! I lost a magnificent Bloodgood Mplae - after a decade of gorgeous growth… simply because the root flare was buried (a.k.a. planted too deep). It was planted correctly with the top of the container soil above soil level, but it turned out the root flare was actually much MUCH deeper in the container.
I should have removed soil until the root flare was visible. just bought two smoke trees at Lowe’s, had to remove more than 4” of soil… if I planted as-is, it would’ve died within a decade.
Something else to consider is that most Japanese maples are grafted. It can be easy to confuse the grafting fuse for the root flare, so make sure to look out for that
I know this video is old so hopefully you’ll see this question- Recently planted a blood good Japanese maple in the front yard about 11ft from the front corner of my front porch. We wanted it to be close enough to the house to sort of “frame “ it since that side of the yard is very empty, but far enough away that it would t grow into the house. My thought was that at 11ft away, even if it ever got to be 20ft wide it still would not interfere/overtake the house.. However after watching this I’m hoping we didn’t make a mistake...thoughts?
I grew a bloodgood from seed, it spent a few years in a pot and then I planted it outside about 2 years ago. Last year it got brown dead leaf spots all over it, you thinks staying wet for too long? It also get afternoon sun only here in central Virginia so maybe getting real hot for it too. Thanks for the video!
Best informational video on this beautiful tree, thank you! I live in zone 8 and LOVE maple trees! I was contemplating buying one this year however, hesitated after I noticed my 2 sugar maples were getting leaf scorched in the summer last year. I will definitely check out your videos before I purchase a tree in the future.
I just planted my Bloodgood Japanese Maple 2 months ago and it looks like it is dieing. I am in zone 9a and it is in full sun all day. I also noticed a few caterpillars on the branches that I removed. Towards the bottom, I noticed white spots on the leaves. What can I do to save this tree?
I have this tree and placed it in a nice corner of my garden and opposite of it on the other side is a coral bark Maple. Right in between them are my Bloomerang Lilac and Irises. I am thinking of container pot my young Bloodgood and place it the large deck.
Jim, Thanks for the video. My bloodgood tree is growing out versus up. The leaves are the dark purple and there is a lot of new growth underneath. It was planted ~2 yrs ago and has gotten 2 feet taller but has spread out like a bush versus a tree. The tree is probaby 5 feet tall but it is probably 8 feet in diameter. Should I cut the lower branches off to encourage growing up vs out? I can send you a picture if that would help. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks, Chris
Thanks for this video. Recently got an interest in JP’s and I got a bloodgood for my balcony. I live in zone 9 (London) with afternoon sun for my bloodgood but was wondering is the one on your video gonna grow taller because if it will, i might have to reconsider
@@brianmyers9730 I just got one that's about 2' tall and very stragly looking. What kind of growth size and filling out can I expect within about 2-3 years? And how long did it take to get 20' tall? I'm very impatient, lol.
Great video! I have this tree in our front yard and our neighbor has it in their backyard. This year we had a late freeze and I noticed on both trees that many of the leaves began turning white, losing their color (doesn't look fungal to me). Have you seen this before, and should I do anything about it?
I have a blood good and a weeping in a pot, foot tall. I placed it on the south east of the house under a tree so they wouldn’t get too much sun. They were not happy. So when winter came about I moved them to the front of the house, more sun, not happy. I think the soil I have them in holds too much water. The weeping started having new foliage last week, now it’s died back.
I am in south-central TX (zone 8b) and I planted a Bloodgood Japanese Maple in February this year. When I planted it, it was in afternoon shade, but I forgot to take into account that the sun moves over summer. It is in almost full sun now. The leaves were ALL green up until this week, when they all shriveled up and dried off. Why were the leaves green in full sun? Too much sun in too hot of a climate? I need to save this tree. Please advise. Thanks.
I live in zone 4 and had 3 Japanese maples in a protected spot for 4 years and they were doing great until the polar vortex hit this winter. Lost all 3 but purchased an Emperor 1 at a local nursery and still put in my protected area over from the roots left from one I had to remove. It will take a while to get all the roots out. Will be covering it completely during the winters now which will spoil the view but can't stand losing another one. It will look stunning after I transplant some peonies to flank it leaving plenty of room for the tree roots.
I have a 6ft cinder block wall in my backyard. Would this tree be good to grow along it? I’m in Sacramento (Zone 9). Would the cut leaf maple work better?
Thanks for the video, I too, love the Bloodgood Japanese Maple. I'm in zone 8a and having a problem. The bank of the tree, nearest the house, is bare. The front, especially the lower parts are gorgeous. Is heat retained by the brick wall making the tree too warm? I don't see any bugs or signs of powdery mildew. Not over watered or fertilized. Thoughts?
I have a new lot and new construction. Is his ok near house or porch? It’s my only shade on lot except late late day from fence and setting sun on one side of my green house. Don’t have any shade from house not other trees. Thanks 😊
Hi, I'm in Zone 10b and I've always wanted a Japanese Maple, but it's just a bit Sub tropical here. This weekend I bought a Bloodgood Japanese Maple at a Nursery 80 miles north of me in Plant City, FL...Harrels Nursery. Great place...I digress. It is in a 30 gallon container and they've had the tree in full sun for 2 years. I'm going to plant it in a filtered sun spot in the morning and shade in afternoon. Do you think there's any chance it will live in my zone? I have to try it. Thanks, Joe

I am in zone 3 and have put the tree in a big container and was thinking of moving it into the garage where it is mostly heated. Will that work? It is really beautiful. I bought it to save it at a greenhouse and got it home only to discover the information you have so kindly shared. Do you have any suggestions to save this poor tree. Al aternatively can I keep it in the living room for the winter?

It goes well below minus 30 degrees here and stays very cold here for months. I have it in the living room now anticipating the winter shift. Is there anything I can do to moisturize the leaves to keep it happier in the hot dry months?
Thank you! I was given one for my birthday. I love in zone 9a(Northern California) I’m not sure if I should plant it right away or perhaps put it in a larger container until next spring? We are about to have a heat wave so I won’t be able to transplant it into the ground till at least Friday. Any advice for me?
I bought one from Lowe's that's about idk, 3'-4' and I immediately planted it in the ground. Leaves do not like the sun (Inland Empire area), I have a pool umbrella semi covering it. Some leaves look dry but the tree itself is doing well
Hi Jim, we are in zone 8a and our frontyard is West facing so it gets afternoon hot sun during peak summer. Is it advisable to plant front or on the south side in the backyard? Can I grow in a container or does it best grow in the ground? ThaNks
The west afternoon sun will burn the leaves in the summer. It will look great in the spring every year, but awful by late summer. Some mid-day shade would be best. They work great in containers and I have a video for Maples in containers.
Hi Jim, I just planted a very young 3ft Bloodgood today that's been potted all summer after nursing it to good health. Some of the leaves are a beautiful bright red, seems to be doing great. Besides mulching, any advice on protecting it from our harsh Missouri winter? It's in a fully exposed space.
Wrap the pot in bubble wrap leaving the bottom open. Pile fallen leaves on top of pot. Make sure it's in a sheltered spot out of the wind. They're tough fellas!
