City of Mist is inspired by Powered by the Apocalypse style of gaming. That kind of thing really focuses in on the narrative more than the numbers, which is why the GM generally doesn't roll. It's their job to help guide the players through gameplay, letting them play to find out, then tell them what happens as a result of what they do, and how the world behaves around them.
When you recommended city of mist a while ago I ran a campaign for my friends and we had so much fun! I cannot recommend this system more it's genuinely such a blast to play
D&D currently has the benefit of having so many great content creators for it. I hope that folks like you and the Dungeon Dudes will continue branching out into other systems. More video content makes new systems feel less daunting, imo. So, thanks!
I'm hoping that, whenever the ORC license is out, Dungeon Dad uno reverses his series on converting Pathfinder monsters into 5e and starts converting stuff like Beholders into PF2e.

City of Mist requires a very specific type of player. A combination of over analyzers and lack of creativity killed my game before it started. I tried running a campaign and literally couldn't get past session 0. My players absolutely could not come to grips with the amount of freedom they had, and some of them have the imagination of a teaspoon and couldn't think up any powers related to the myth they wanted to be associated with. No matter how much I tried to help them, they were never happy with the amount of freedom they had. Your city of mist video stuck with me and I played it. My group had now been playing for 2 two years and I have had new plays ease into ttrpgs with City of mist
Your first video about city of mist inspired me to try out the system and I've loved it. It's one of my favorite systems and easily my favorite example of a powered by the apocalypse system.
I got CoM back in early 2021, it's a super fun experience and if you want to give it a trial run to see if its your kind of thing there is a free starter kit on the City of Mist website
Want to try this and have most of the books (minus most of the cases and threats), but my schedule is a mess and will probably only be able to do play by post.
I don't think City of Mist is my cup of tea, both as a GM and a player. (I'm still going to binge every video of you if you'd become a CoM Channel tho) I also don't think that CoM is really comparable to DnD. It's like comparing two completely different video games, animal crossing and call of duty for example. Some people want, need or enjoy a big set of more complex rules like DnD. Others want more freedom and emphasis on storytelling like CoM offers. Also, but I'm not sure about that, I have the feeling that both CoM players and GMs need a LOT of self-restraint. Seems like you can live very strong power fantasies very easily.
powered by the apocalypses games are my fave. i am actually making a (slightly complicated) dice pool system meant to be mix and matched with various modals to fit any scifi setting. more rolling than a PBTA system but the same sliding nonbinary success scale seen in one. no GM rolling either. just a more defined system with more variation for the types of bonuses you can get and how you scumlpt your character. maybe i should look for your business email and see if you want to play test it before i go public for a kickstarter 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I've checked out City of Mist. I wish I had a GM who knew what was happening to get me through character creation and run a game or a one shot. It's a bit confusing in the rulebook ngl 😅
Funnily enough, I think it's actually the opposite, unless you took a starter kit which assumes that you use a pregen. The 513 pages the core book has is a lot, but 60 of them are detailed inspirations for the themes you can pick, 90 are setting info for inspiration, god knows how many are GM advice on pretty much anything they can do... I really respect that book because it goes into way, way more details than it could've gotten away with as the system itself is incredibly freeform. It's, frankly, the opposite of Fate Core book in a way, even though it's an obvious heavy inspiration as a system, which just gives you the barebones basics and when you ask the book "how do I use all of this?" it just puts two thumbs up and says "have fun, buddy".
My friends and I played CoM a while ago and it we didn't play it the way it was meant to be played at ALL. One person's mythos was Nord VPN, one's mythos was another one of the players at the table, one's was Biggie Smalls. It was a lot of fun completely abusing the game. 10/10 would recommend.
City of Mist always seems fascinating whenever you discuss it. I've shied away from it because Noir isn't quite my thing but your mention that you don't have to run a Noir game is interesting... I did enjoy the series Once Upon a Time and something like that looks like it might be a nice fit... Hmmmmm...

Man this video should have came out when you posted your original CoM vids. This would've saved me a bunch of time convincing my players to give it a shot
Not just easy. Extremely more immersive and alot less metagaming since most of your actions will almost always occure in-game and in-character. CoM is a perfect balance for players who love storytelling, mistery, conspiracy and creativity beyond the stablished stereotypes. lastly, I always take more time of my game playing the game rather than solving math aritmetic calculations and "am I at Xfeet or not in range to the Monster " hahaha. Lastly ...ther CHARACTER CREATION IS SO MEANINGFULL! Great review!
I find the ability for DM to decide if a roll succeeds or fails after the roll is made better, since it gives more control to the DM. It's hard to DM anyway, and being able to keep the mistery by simply saying "not enough" is easier than figuring out all the modifiers that affect the roll the player makes
Frankly, if you need to keep a mystery by fudging rolls, that isn't a particularly good mystery. Unlike some other games, PbtA make it a point to only roll when stakes are clear and interesting, and also very much make a point of "to do it, do it" - if a player says "I'm making an investigation move", you're contractually obligated to ask "cool, what do you do?", in no small part because the cause determines the stakes and effect - after all, you can't exactly find something that's never been on paper in a library, can you? But you can then feed that piece of information forward. It's a bit more explicit in Forged in the Dark games, but it's always mentioned directly.
@@orelyosif5852 Powered by the Apocalypse, a design philosophy(Vincent Baker says so; system is good enough) which started with Apocalypse World, which is also a thing that City of Mist uses, except it's mildly modified: a typical PbtA game uses stats that are a bit more familiar even if game specific, while City of Mist uses a more freeform Fate-like approach(compare and contrast Aspects, even though Fate also uses skill scores)
If you enjoy city of mist, you may be interested in a game within the same system called Masks. It's superhero based, so if that seems like it might be fun to you, I highly recommend it.

I must've missed something in translation here, because I personally found learning the system to be a bit convoluted and sometimes frustrating. I tried for a few hours to put it all together in my head but some things just didn't click. By now I've pretty much forgotten everything about it, must've been well over a year since I found out about the game itself. And I don't know if I'd somehow overthought something or if there really were unanswered questions sprouting up but it did lead me to bail on creating a demo-run of CoM. I'd genuinely like to know if somehow the problem occurred on my end, so if there're videos that go into detail about how the mechanics interact with eachother and whatnot that'd be great to know.
The hardest thing about City of Mist is understanding the right play dynamics. I've played it with my group a few times and it falls apart pretty hard. Usually some mix between traditional "I have everything planned and need to make the game challenging" DM style and "We don't know where the plot is so we're gonna twiddle our thumbs until something happens" players. Which is weird because we've all played World of Darkness games.
Been thinking about it considering how fresh it sounds, and honestly your best bet would be focusing more on narrative and making something based in Sharn (Eberron).
0:56 I take the burden upon myself. Is ok by me, and my players enjoy not being overwhelmed by too many spells and/or abilities. (We always play at 20th level or above)
I really wished you did more of a comparison. Like, what makes the spotlight thing better or worse? Is the lack of hp an issue or a boon? Does dnd do anything better Than city of mist? I get its sponsored, but it feels more like it was written by son of oak when all that's discussed is "here's six things that are in CoM, and here are two things in dnd that are the equivalent to two of those CoM things " I know Logan isn't a sellout, and I know son of oak didn't have a huge hand in what was said. But it *feels* like it.
Never heard of city of mist, just played dungeon world. I had my issues with that system and was homebrewing a whole new system akin to it, but those issues seem to have been completely fixed by city of mist .... I'm having a brain orgasm , why have I never heard of this before
hey dude you should check out FIST, it's kinda like City of Mist but instead of myths and stuff like that it's like Metal Gear. I'm not good at explaining things so I won't anymore, go check out FIST
I think this system is less popular by a million miles than D&D for similar reasons most 1 page rpgs are well received as a concept but dont have any staying power. Its up to the CM and players to invent EVERYTHING lorewise and almost all rules are so simplified that it all feels the same. It lacks the tactile fun of the older more cumbersome ttrpg's, where using a different weapon or spell needs completely different types of clicky clacky dice and just about every physical action or reality has a prewritten rule to wrestle with and every character and location in an adventure has a predefined nature to explore. And sure if you like spontaneous fun the time to stop and check can be killer, but for most people it looks like they enjoy bouncing off a detailed rule framework instead of personally inventing the concept and description of a fireball anytime they do anything, that ultimately falls a little flat with playing identically to any other ability. Its why people outside of game designers didnt like 4e D&D, interchangeable rulesets just feel video gamey and hand wavy in a way a thick tome rarely needed rules doesnt
Hey runesmith, random idea here: what if you made a series getting to learn other systems, but instead of having to invest your time yourself, interview friends that know those systems really well and just chat, ask your questions and maybe end the video with an encounter to demonstrate system mechanics? I'd watch the hell out of that lol.
At the start of the video, you talk about a one-shot he'd previously written that got you invited back for Local Legends. Which case was it? I'm curious.
I honestly find CoM harder, personally. I hate systems that lack measuring stick mechanics and how effective your character is mechanically is purely based on how much you can bend backwards to justify why your card should let you do the thing you want to do. I think it's inherently bad game design because it means no one ever starts off at the same level of potential effectiveness because it's *purely* based on how much someone can/is willing to BS in the moment. I've played CoM and other PBTA style games and while I have enjoyed myself, they're not games I recommend to newer players who frequently get intimidated by needing to "perform well".
Dude, if you did a video on the dnd alternatives, I'd watch everything

0:56 I take the burden upon myself.
Is ok by me, and my players enjoy not being overwhelmed by too many spells and/or abilities. (We always play at 20th level or above)
I really wished you did more of a comparison.
Like, what makes the spotlight thing better or worse? Is the lack of hp an issue or a boon? Does dnd do anything better Than city of mist?
I get its sponsored, but it feels more like it was written by son of oak when all that's discussed is "here's six things that are in CoM, and here are two things in dnd that are the equivalent to two of those CoM things "
I know Logan isn't a sellout, and I know son of oak didn't have a huge hand in what was said. But it *feels* like it.
Dammit, now I have to get the core set
I like to roll dice, too. Not enough crunch.
I'd love for you to check out Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. It's a blast.
Never heard of city of mist, just played dungeon world. I had my issues with that system and was homebrewing a whole new system akin to it, but those issues seem to have been completely fixed by city of mist .... I'm having a brain orgasm , why have I never heard of this before
don't know who the crimson king is... but i think whatever he does... it just works
INTERACTION FOR THE ALGORITHM LORD. KEEP IT UP MAN!!!! -🧙🏽♂️👍
hey dude you should check out FIST, it's kinda like City of Mist but instead of myths and stuff like that it's like Metal Gear.
I'm not good at explaining things so I won't anymore, go check out FIST
Wicked ones is also pretty dope
I went into this being mad that so many people are leaving D&D 5e.. But now i also wanna play this game
Seems very close to powered by the appocalypse.
13 classes now with the artificer
Please do a video on how to make powers for mutants and masterminds (if you play it), every guide just vomits the textbook back at you
Hey runesmith, random idea here: what if you made a series getting to learn other systems, but instead of having to invest your time yourself, interview friends that know those systems really well and just chat, ask your questions and maybe end the video with an encounter to demonstrate system mechanics? I'd watch the hell out of that lol.
But like what if I want the concept of spell lists and classes and skill points but want it more digestible?
It would be a great series if, as a primarily 5e player, you were to try regularly some other popular games in a one shot and compare with D&D
My only problem with CoM is the choice paralysis when it comes to character creation.
