  • This Video Is From The 1956 Rodgers & Hammerstein Movie "Carousel". In This Scene Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), Learns Her Husband Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae), Has Just Died Of A Self Inflicted Knife Wound. Much To Her Regret, Julie Then Realizes She Never Told Billy She Loved Him While He Was Alive. To Garner Inspiration And Hope, Julie Heroically Attempts To Sing "You'll Never Walk Alone", But Is Too Emotionally Shattered To Finish. Cousin Nettie (Claramae Turner - A Real Life American Operatic Contralto), Intervenes And Sings A Beautiful Rendition Of "You'll Never Walk Alone". NOTE - FRANK SINATRA WAS ORIGINALLY CAST IN ROLE OF BILLY BIGELOW. ENJOY!!

Man, I'm a 40 yr old dude who can't STAND musicals (except for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) and have never even seen CAROUSEL. Someone happened to mention this song in passing, and I was like, "I've heard of that song, but have no idea what it sounds like. Let me check it out."
This beautiful song DESTROYED me. Not loud weeping and wailing or anything -- but just INSTANT tears silently streaming down my face. Super emotional; it got me right in the heartstrings.
Dammit! Now, I'm going to have to watch the whole film!

When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm, there's a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark
    Walk on through the wind

I would think that someday the musicals will be revisited and the true great talent that was in those shows will be once again be admired and cherished. So powerful and eloquent and I haven't used that word in a while. I was at a goodwill and they had the LP Carousel there and Shirley Jones just celebrated her 90th birthday so I was aware of that and I ran over the last song on the album and had to listen to it. Shirley Jones was robbed of many Oscars and Tonys her acting and singing in the Music Man made that movie complete with Preston. IMO

My Father Harry Parkinson was a professional singer in Liverpool and stood on the
mighty Spion Kop at Anfield in the 60s..He sang the Carousel version of YNWA as part of his act and regularly hosted
pre-match entertainment in the Wookey Hollow Club close to the ground..
When the Gerry Marsden version hit No1, the lads he stood with on the terraces hoisted him on their shoulders and he belted it out in his booming operatic tenor voice to the Kop and it caught on..So my Dad is credited with starting off YNWA on the Kop and helped cement it as a
      worldwide sporting anthem..YNWA

Thank goodness Frank Sinatra didn't get the role. Gordon Macrae was a better singer and better looking..

I believe he did get the role but walked off the set!
They had to get Gordon McRae in a hurry.
Quite agree he did a much better job!
Sometimes things just work out right.

Tom Fitzsimmons: May 31, 2013 - FIRST, permit me to apologize for misspelling your last name as Fitzgerald in my earlier post. Elated you could use this post in a positive, constructive manner. Good luck and thanks again for listening!!

Why is the sound altered? It was just a clip. You didn’t have to change anything for copyright purposes.

"Self-inflicted" is a little off-base; he had a knife he was using in a robbery and fell on it.
