- Classic Game Room HD reviews MS. PAC MAN for Sega Genesis (aka Sega Mega Drive). This version of Ms. Pac Man has stunning visuals and several creative mazes to choose from in addition to the arcade classics. It's an excellent version of the game and one that fans of the Pac Man series should visit (or re-visit, it was released in 1991). The new maps are cool remixes of the originals without becoming goofy and outlandish. Published by Tengen, Ms. Pac Man is an excellent Sega Genesis video game that is about as good as any Ms. Pac Man port can be. This CGR review of Ms. Pac Man on Sega Genesis has gameplay from Ms. Pac Man showing game play on Sega Megadrive.
I loved the Tengen version of Ms. Pac-Man because you can play the game in a variety of different ways. In other words, you can play the original arcade mazes, strange mazes, mini mazes, big mazes, you can play as both Ms. Pac-Man and Mr. Pac-Man (The original Pac-Man), you can play with or without the Pac-Booster option and so much more. Back when I had a Sega Genesis and a copy of this classic Genesis version masterpiece, my mother and I would play in 2-player mode for days on end. She would play as Ms. Pac-Man and I would play as Pac-Man and we would gobble up all the dots, fruits and ghosts for days on end.

If anyone want to Play Pac-Man on the Genesis get the game Pac-man 2 the new adventures then when you get to the main menu go to the password screen and enter PCMN0RG and it will take you to the original Pac-Man game. For the Super Nintendo version enter PCMNDPW.

Best version of Ms. Pac-Man there is. I used to play through this in co-op mode with my mom all the time as a kid. Good times!
Some may complain about the graphical changes, but IMO this is the best looking version, even better than the coin op
I love that you can google "Pac Man" and play Pac Man right on your screen instantly.

Great game! in the early to mid 90's when the old seaside arcades were closing down they couldn't give these old cabinets away! it would have been great to have had a white van and the foresight to gather them all up at that time!
The local pizza parlor near where I live has a Ms Pac Man stand up arcade, spent 1 dollar, had a blast. Pizza, beer, and Ms Pac Man is an amazing combo

One improvement that I always loved about Ms. Pac-man over the original is being able to hear the duration of the power pellets. In the original, you would have no idea how many times when I'm about to eat a ghost, and the second Pac-Man's mouth chomps at it, the effect wears off. Sure they blink, but the sound speeds up and really assists in eating ghosts in the amount of time you are given. It's all so much more efficient.

Will I ever tire of Mark's reviews? Probably not. It's as if his voice is charmed so that hearing it is outrageously addictive.
Mark, I swear you and I are one-in-the-same haha... Ms. Pac-Man is my favorite game of all time I think, Mario Bros. a close 2nd. There's nothing like it... and there never will be again.
When you can just pick up a game like this... 35 years later, have it still be JUST as fun, and yet... we don't have to commit the kind of time we do to "modern" games.... I dunno.
These arcade originals are priceless and brilliant and classy!

Everything said in this review is 100% spot on truth. I'm tweeting it. At 01:24 I totally remember that. The 90s had some good things (music, movies, entertainment) but that decade also tried to screw with everything original too much. "We need this to be something new, something fresh!" .. "Um, no you don't leave it alone.." The 90s were the LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT US decade where cynicism and narcissism exploded. It was also the decade where unoriginality started to take shape around the mid 90s.
I think this is the first version of Ms. Pacman I ever played. I rented it one weekend as a kid. I had PacMan for my Game Gear, and this game just blew me away.
CGR got me back into my childhood memories. I've never been so excited the last couple years to collect all the old games from my childhood and pull out all my systems. There is just something about classic retro games. They are bloody charming.

You think the turbo option is strange? I grew up with fast Ms Pacman. I cannot play the slow version for the life of me.
Same here. For the longest time I thought it was the standard feature. Then I saw one with slow speed and it didn't feel right.

In my opinion, the coolest part of this version is the two player simultaneous co-op. It's a shame he didn't get to it in this video, though I suppose I understand that he probably didn't have the time to look for someone to play it with. Still think it would have been worth a mention.

I just got this game for Christmas along with a Retron 3 and a few more old games. Hell of a Christmas.
Hold down the mode button on the 6 button controller when you turn the console on and it will work.
Would just like to let Classic Game Room know, I know the cocktail experience that Mark is talking about. It is truly beyond cool.
Played this at the chinese place by my house when I was a kid. Great machine. I should go back to the neighborhood and see if they still got it.
When I was like 5 or 6, my dad and I played Ms. Pac-Man on the Sega Genesis almost every single night. It's where my obsession for Pac-Man kicked in lol.

This was actually one of my first games.
The speed boost was an available option on the arcade machines (which is why they included it on this game). It truly is the best console release of Ms. Pac-Man.
You should try the "Arrangements" found in the Namco Museum games. Pac-Mania & Pac-Attack are also amazing games!
I have a complete copy of this one, and the cartridge-only on SNES. Ms. Pac-Man is good for friendly competition. This version even has cooperative mode.
I think this is one of the games that if you try to play with the 6-button gamepad, you have to hold the "Mode" button before powering the system on.

I have never seen an original arcade machine with just MS PAC MAN on it. I always see the MS PAC MAN/Galaga reunion Machines.

We have a Ms. Pac Man machine at our local laundromat! It's great to be able to play them on the original machines, but this Genesis version seems like a good home port. I'll check it out.
Setting turbo always on was the only way I played this on the Genesis! Much closer to the speed I remember from the arcades.

I got it yesterday at a store called 'The Exchange," that sells games ranging from newer consoles (Wii, 360) to the very old consoles (Genesis, and even TurboGrafx 16).
This is one of the best Genesis games ever.
The 1998 version of Battlezone was one of those rare 3-D reboots/remakes that actually got everything right. Actually surpassing the original.

To play with a 6 button controller, you have to hold down the mode button as you power up the game, then release it after the "Licenced by Sega Enterprise, blah blah blah" screen is gone

I've actually seen a resurgence in those cocktail arcade machines at pubs and clubs in recent years.
i remember playing the late 90s DOS version of pacman and i played itj up to the point of addiction. I remember i could actually loop through all 10 levels 4 times without dying once and it was much more complicated since it included extra lives and bombs too.
Frogger 3D is actually good IMO, and i enjoyed Swampys revenge.

I loved Ms. Pac Man back in the day, and got very good at it (close to 300,000 on a normal speed machine at my peak). However, the two best Pac Man games, in my opinion, are the two most under-represented ones, namely Pac Man Jr. and Super Pac Man.
Atari 2600 is about the only console with Pac Man Jr. and Super Pac Man is FINALLY out on XBox 360, but the standard 360 controller blows for any Pac Man style game.
Thank God for MAME at least.
I know what you're talking about, in reference to the cocktail arcade games. I got an original space invaders arcade game cocktail table from a rummage sale for $10. Still works.

one of my friends has a Burger Time/Ms. Pac Man/Donkey Kong/Frogger/Galaga cocktail machine. best thing ever.
This was a nice Mrs Pacman port. Even if it wasn't Arcade code. They rebuilt the game from the ground up. It was well made though and it played like it's Arcade counterpart. So it's nice, but if you're looking for an Arcade replica. You won't find it here.

Agaim, everyone, for those that own wired 6-button controllers hold the MODE button on top when turning the system on. It sadly is one of the games known to hsve issues with anything but the 3-button controllers.

Good ole Tengen. They made some of the best stuff. This game, including extra mazes, was also ported to the NES. Sadly, without Nerdtendo's licensing rights. Runs just as well as the Gene one. I prefere the NES port. Why? One reason. NES Advantage!!! True joystick. (See CGRHD's review on the Advantage.)
I used to have this game. I'll never find a better pacman game than this one. I remember gettin pretty far in this one.

Mark, there's an issue with the 6-button controllers in this game. It's a known issue with this and some other games. Unless you're using the 6-button Arcade Power Stick, your best bet is to hold down the controller's "MODE" button as you turn the system on. If you have aforementioned joystick, switch the stick to 3-button mode and you're good to go.
Mark, to make the 6 button arcade stick (and controllers) work with this game, hold down the mode button as it starts up. This and a few other games have a problem with 6 button controllers

How old are you? This game has been around and has stood the test of time for 30 years! If you weren't in the arcades playing this game back in the 80's, then you were sleeping under a rock.

This is the best version of Ms. Pacman ever. I didn't like the original because it didn't have variety like this (and the mastersystem version) had.
My mother has probably put over 800 hours into the Mastersystem version.
Yes, Genesis has an awesome version but nothing beats my old arcade machine sitting in my game room. My folks had a business and were renting it in the mid eighties when the guy who owned it died. Nobody ever claimed it so it somehow ended up with me!!! I just replaced all the controls on it as well as the burned in monitor. Damn elongated screens are expensive! As I said, sega is good but for me there is only one way to play Ms. Pacman...and Dig Dug of course.
Loved the cocktail version in pizza hut... pizza or mountain dew in one hand, and playing the game with the other hand. Those days are gone.
Didn't care for this version, though they did okay with the self scrolling maze. The D pad is the problem. Then again, better than with the 5200 controller. Only thing worse than that is that madcatz joystick controller for the 360.
This may sound like blasphemy to ya, but have you ever considered building a MAME cab and putting your fave arcade games on it? Or having one built for you. Kinda get the true arcade feel for the games you love so much
great review Mark. i know you feel emulators to be a bit of a sin, However, i must admit- short of having the actual ms. pac-man machine in my home... i emulate the original ms pac man arcade game with macMame, and use a 'stelladaptor' so i can control the game with an original atari 2600 joystick. next step would be building a MAME cabinet conversion of course, for the actual arcade feel. great video anyways, thanks for posting.

i believe the snes\genesis version were ported after the excellent nes version. that's the one i used to play.

Pacman World 2 is great.
I still like the nes version of this game. The nes is the same game with same options. The only difference is that it looks like the arcade version and not the 16-bit enhanced version.
