That solved an over 3 decade mystery. I got Jetfire for Easter and, within a week, I heard a snap and some metal (the metal ring that was missing) came out of his left arm. I never took it apart because I didn't want to destroy the stickers (long before I knew of your lighter fluid trick) so I just lived with the floppy arm. Jetfire was right handed anyway 😉. I'm glad he was serviceable. Another great fix, Dave.👍
@@toypolloi I think so, which may have caused the breakage in the first place. I don't remember much more, other than it breaking and just playing through. Thanks again for the cool video and trip down memory lane.
Awe one of my first Restoration projects..i used to buy jetfire parts lots back in the early days of ebay for a couple of bucks, and make complete Jetfires i managed to score two early versions that still had the Macross emblems on the wings.. For a while there were cheap bootleg ones in the swapmeet for 5 dollars, and i bought a bunch hoping to convert them to Stampede, ostrich, and Elintseeker Valkyrie variants but never got around to it. Hopefully someday when i retire..
I agree with u about a toy not being perfect. When I collect I look to see they are in good shape, with some play wear to them. I like how it gives them character and a certain charm that comes with its own story!!!
trying to collect modern figures/toys has become a nightmare. Bringing back toys that either I loved or someone else did is a great experience. Thanks for all variety of things you work on. It's nice to get that love for toys back.
My favorite toy of all time, I was quite excited to this video come up. I only wish you did more with it! For instance, often the the plastic tab that comes out of the back plate and holds in the metal hinge on either side of his head in robot mode snap off and are missing! I'd love to see what kind of creative approach you take to fastening down that hinge in an aesthetically pleasing way. Or for that matter, it would be nice to see you jury rig a fix for your Jetfire's missing arm hardware. For the record, the gear and spring you are missing in the upper arm are actually identical to the ones in the shoulder (but you probably realized that when you disassembled the other arm). I'm unabashedly biased in favor of more Jetfire videos, but I'll take what I can get. Thanks for what you do!
This videos are becoming my reason for getting out the old toys and playing again...... Err I mean fixing my old toys! Lol great video. Breaking out the jetfire this weekend for my next project!
I love your g1 fixes, they inspired me to do some of my own. I'm working on a Twintwist with a really weak torsion spring that doesn't let him roll but stuck at the moment. But now instead of immediately casting aside imperfect finds I get excited. Thank you sir.
I have an original White, yellow and black Robotech Veritech that is more of less the same toy as Jetfire. Unfortunately the back armor piece that holds the rockets on his back in place is cracked at the bottom where it slides over the backpack. I'm currently trying Plastruct Plastic Weld on the part, but I may just have to seek another out. The part is a slate gray color, while Jetfire's version of the part is red. Great video! It's just funny who I was working on my Veritech this morning when this video debuted!
Gotta admit I was a fan of Macross/Robotech. I always did wonder why they would use a Macross Super Valkyrie as a Transformer. Good fix and maybe you could find a similar sized washer in PC parts. Also Poundland do have some bags and boxes of various size washers.
I suspect that shoulder screw is going to keep getting unscrewed as the shoulder is rotated in the future. Maybe some weaker loctite or superglue on the thread might inhibit the screw movement.
Hard to tell, but the grommet looks like a Belleville Washer. It’s basically a spring in a washer shape. You can probably get them from a site similar to McMaster Carr or one that is closer to you.
Have you ever used superglue to fix the joints? I find if I drip a drop or two into a loose joint and continue to rotate it while the glue "sets", it doesn't lock the joint, it just sort of fills in the gaps, but as long as you keep moving it for about 30 seconds, it builds up a layer that keeps them tight without gluing the pieces together.
Great video. Very informative keep up the great work. I look forward to your next video. I have a Swoop with a partial top beak any suggestions on how I could repair him?
I always hated how this Jetfire toy didn’t look much like the one from the Transformers cartoon. However, years later when RoboTech came out, i noticed it looked exactly like the transforming Jet planes, you could even transform it from the plane to robot and the Half robot/plane, just like they did during the show. Since RoboTech was a much better series, i was very happy with this. Wonder why there was such a difference in the look and why it only matched up with a other show later on.
I have a jetfire it's missing the backpack on closer examination the backplate hinge is broken so I would need a backplate and pack. The problem is I have no resources for parts and Ebay is too crazy for pricing do you have recommendations for parts resources?
shadowspwnz use a 12% hydrogen peroxide solution. Pour it un a container, put the plastic in and use UV lights. Leave it over night and boom. It’s called retro brightening.
Because Jetfire is a 1/55 scale bandi VF-1S. the original toy was released as A & J model and S model as well as the Ellyinseeker and the VF 1D trainer version from Macross love you remember 84. I have one in the closet I think it's called the super ostrich. Jetfire in that comes with the Roy Fokker special armor that was originally molded in dark gray. If you get an original first round Jetfire it still has the Macross logos on the jetpacks
I was just given one and need to repair the backpack. (The one with the rudder on it). I found a replacement backpack but need to use epoxy putty to build up the back and insert a pin to hols it in unless someone else has a suggestion to fix it.
I still don't get why they used a Battleloid for Transformers. By the way Dave, I wanted to thank you for all your tips, they helped me fix and restore my old TMNT action figures that had been broken and glued for years.
The robot design predates Robotech, originating with Super Dimension Fortress Macross anime from Japan. The series was made by Studio Nue but funded by Big West Frontier, who aggressively marketed the animation and visual designs in the United States. The VF-1 Valkyrie's iconic design appeared in numerous licensed works, almost always with a new backstory. Besides Jetfire, models of the VF-1 could be found repacked in Revell's "Robotech Defenders" line (which was purchased outright by Harmony Gold and combined with their re-edit of Macross and two other anime series to produce Robotech) and 21st Century Imports/FASA's BattleTech models and games. The latter famously set off a series of lawsuits which lasted over three decades! But besides the "big three" of Transformers, Robotech, and BattleTech, I can remember innumerable official, licensed, unlicensed, and out-right knock-off versions of the Valkyrie for most of the mid-to-late 1980s. These pretty quickly died out as new properties became popular and international copyright law was strengthened. But for me, this will always be the PXH-1 Phoenix Hawk. :D

Thanks Michael. That explains the missing piece, but not why the arm was put together wrong. Must have been a factory error.

Jetfire was the most articulated Transformer for his time.

The black ratcheting grommets in the shoulders disintegrate over time but they're also in the elbows.
I really liked Transformers but found them hard to play with outside of transforming them back and forth. Great fix though!
Beautiful figure. One I always wanted but never had.

If you have a junker Omega Supreme Tank then I’m sure the cog and spring are the same for the arm.
I did a full restore on one of these last year. Wasn't easy.
Do you know what kind of spring and screw are used for Jetfire's arms?
