BECOMING THE BEST RAF TYPHOON DISPLAY PILOT 29 SQUADRON FIGHTER PILOT DEMONSTRATING PROPER SKILLS

- Flight Lieutenant David "Turbo" Turnbull is taxiing in 'Blackjack' for another practice display with a hard deck of just 100ft!
We normally expect to hear callsign ANARCHY1 when it comes to the RAF Typhoon display pilot, however, this year, the display pilot's callsign is "TURBO"! Our display pilots nickname is 'Turbo' but is it not Anarchy1? We knew that this year was going to be different and TURBO is the new callsign for the display pilot, which has been borrowed from Lossiemouth's 6 Squadron.
This year's 2024 Typhoon Display Pilot, David "TURBO" Turnbull will be doing his first set of 10 practice displays at 1,500ft and then will lower it to 500ft hard deck before being allowed to smack it right down to 100ft. Once you hear callsign TURBO1, there will be excitement. However, Turbo will also be carrying out practice displays around the country, this is to prepare him and get used to performing displays away from the home base, which is what airshow season is all about. Before Turbo will be allowed to display at airshows, he will need to achieve and obtain his PDA (Public Display Authority). Without this insurance, he will not be able to display at airshows and venues. The other responsibility is once a pilot obtains a PDA, they cannot go more than 10 days with some sort of display, whether practice or real world at air shows. Failing this would result in having to re-apply for a PDA.
The Typhoon Display Team work-up begins with the selection of the Display Pilot, usually in Oct/Nov of the preceding season. The selection is conducted by the Officer Commanding (OC) 29 Squadron, Station Commander (Stn Cdr) RAF Coningsby and the Combat Air Force Commander (CA FC) with the final decision being made by Air Officer Commanding (AOC) No 1 Group (1 Gp). The selection is based on previous experience and ability as a Typhoon Pilot. Currently the Display Pilot is selected from the Qualified Pilot Instructors serving on 29 Squadron, the Typhoon Operational Conversion Unit (OCU).
Once selected the new Display Pilot shadows his predecessor for the end of the season and has the opportunity to fly in display practices flown at RAF Coningsby for currency. During this time the Display Pilot is tasked with designing their display sequence. The sequence is usually made up of previously approved aerobatic manoeuvres that can be flown in Typhoon. New manoeuvres require AOC 1 Gp to approve them. The Display Pilot must design not only a Full Display but also a Limited and Flat sequence used in the event of poorer weather.
During sequence development the Typhoon simulators are used to check the sequence before the airborne work-up is started. The simulator is also used throughout the work-up to prepare the Display Pilot for bad weather (including strong winds) and to practice aircraft handling in the unlikely event of an emergency during a display to ensure complete safety for the crowd.
The work-up continues progressively stepping down base heights from 1500ft to 500ft. A predefined number of practises at each height is to be achieved. At the final display height of 500ft, level turns and flypasts can also be conducted at 300ft and 100ft respectively.
The end of the work-up is the awarding of the Public Display Authority (PDA). AOC 1 Gp personally visits RAF Coningsby watches the display, reviews the work-up and if content grants the Display Pilot PDA, meaning they can then demonstrate the outstanding performance of Typhoon in front of crowds of hundreds of thousands of people during the summer display season.

Ladies, gents and teddy bears we hope you are enjoying Turbo’s displays. We have seen him from 1,500ft down to ant scaring heights as 100ft hard deck. Now with the new Typhoon livery for 2024 about to hit the skies, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Let us know in the comments. Please support the channel by clicking the LIKE button and subscribing ooohh yeah
Turbo has come up with such a great display!
But then Nikos camera work is so good - directed by Ted of course. Brilliantly handled, not scared to zoom out so we can see the manoeuvres properly. Some other streamers I've seen obsessed about filling the screen with plane & miss half the action, even if they manage to track fast enough.
I guess that photography background pays off where it's the shot that matters, not just the object.
Bravo Nikos! 👏👏👏👏👏
What a superb comment and a very important one. I’m glad you mentioned about Nikos’ background and the zooming in. If it was constantly zoomed in, it would look like a flight simulator game and there would be no dynamic not depth to it. There would be no excitement to moves nor give you any aspect of altitude. This is a superb comment Dex. And yes, the display was great too. Thank you so much for this
Can't wait to see how this looks in the new jet! Turbo and Nikos working in tandem to bring us this great display - thanks to both!
Thanks Ellesee
Absolutely awesome!
What an ambassador for the RAF, TURBO you legend…..by the way I love the Max Alpha. Also world class camera work Nikos ❤️🫡
Oii oiii Captain A thank you very much. We love that move too
Spectacular! Flt Lt David Turnbull, very best wishes for a fantastic display season &...beyond! Jaw dropping practice displays. Oh & must say the Max Alpha manoeuvre, lordy! It's out of this world! I could rant on for the UK at how incredible your displays are but will stop there... meantime. How does Nikos capture them so well? I have no idea! Thank you ❤
Oiii oiii Margo thank you so much for this. Turbo is just magical
Such a classic display by such a talented pilot and the weather performed just as well as the aircraft well done ted and nicos
Cannot wait to see Turbo at the Airshows in full display flow. With Nikos at his absolute best the filming of Turbo's flight is outstanding well done Nikos and with our Leader Ted by his side nothing is impossible for this team and the TCS Family 50,000 is within reach ladies, gents and teddy bears
Oii oiii Debbie great to see you and Garry. Hope you are both well. Can’t wait to see the new livery smashing out a display like a leaping salmon
Pretty magnificent solo dispkay as that is a banger indeed from the Typhoon !! 😊
Turbo Turbo Turbo Turbo. Go Turbo Go.
Just a magic display. Turbo aced the Aileron Roll into Max Alpha. The control is easy to see. Learnt it virtually in its entirety. Turning like Turbo. 👍 A real crowd puller this display not least cos it's the new display pilot but the sequences are so compact and we get involved. There's a real skill in doing that. He gonna gain alot of fans. Wait till he wears Moggy aka invasion striped Typhoon like a glove. At one with the Aircraft. Beautiful 😍
He is set to wow the crowds but loving the fact he has a move distinctive to him, his own signature more, “ the leaping salmon”
Absolutely top notch! If I could I'd travel all the way to the UK just to see this display.
Oii oiii Leanne hope you do one day 🤙🏼
Not bad I suppose😂. Going to miss Blackjack, but looking forward to seeing Turbo in the new display Typhoon.

I can only hope he's playing 'Highway to the Danger Zone' at full blast while doing that madness. Or maybe 'Turbo Killer - Carpenter Brut' might be more on point.

There are some nasty negative G’s in Turbo’s sequence
Oi oii, do we know when the PDA performance is done & confirmed??
It is usually in May
So ted Wots the new livery paint job on the new typhoon called
Moggy
When is the next day best to go to Lakenheath
It is all pot luck, regardless of base
Very good very nice joob 🇵🇱🫡
Ooohhh yeah
Amazing looks at the manoeuvring of it. So fast
A superb display and then the opportunity for the spectators to exchange waves with the Turbo at the fence line when he has landed (when circumstances permit) is amazing PR for the RAF. How many youngsters will be inspired from that experience?
That is exactly the point right there Sie, inspiration. Well said man and that is exactly right, this is where the inspiration comes from, airshows and displays like this. I remember Sainty said he was inspired by the airshows at Sunderland. That simple wave and salute can be a life changer for many.
And Turbo’s display, absolutely sensational!
Beautiful
Ooohh yeah
