The lady she’s speaking with from Ellis Island said that the year before her grandmother immigrated there was a bill passed that required all immigrates must be able to read or write in their native language.
I wonder how those records are accessed. My great grandmother was held for deportation because of 'Varicose Veins', duh! She already had 5 grown children waiting for her here. She was accompanied by her 6th and last who was returning to the old country after delivering her. She eventually did get to stay. I'd love to know what she went through.

A tired joke that never made sense. She’s been in theater since 8, graduated high school, got accepted to NYU, at what point did someone believe she couldn’t read? Not to mention reading scripts all the time.

Do you think the people who came up with the terrible "joke" that Lea Michele can't read or write might've known this piece of her family history? I doubt they were intelligent enough to go that deep into it, but it would be interesting to know if that were the case.
Sorry but if she was born in Saloniki and has the surname Veissi she is of ALBANIAN ethnicity and not Greek and not Turkish: In Greece the Albanians are known as ARVANITAS. In albanian is Veizi.
Do you realize how ridiculous it sounds that ancient Greece or any Greece / Ellas is Turkish. The ottoman empire was a hiccup as are all other empires 😅
so sweet of her to carry on the family tradition ❤
That shady title 😂
they knew what they were doing with that title 💀
THE SHADE OF THIS THUMBNAIL 💀
Someone got some revenge with that title. 😂
Revenge for what?
Many of our own ancestors could neither read or write also. Not so uncommon back then, nor shocking, as dramatic as this may seem.

Ohhhh this one gave me goose bumps as she walks her great grandmother's path and reads the transcripts! I felt for her!
The Giuseppe Verdi is the boat my grandmother arrived on!!!
Whoever uploaded this needs a promotion! 😂
Where's the next part of Lea's story? Don't leave us hanging.
LMAO at the click baiting title 😂
What a tough story for Lea to discover ! And she is so charming throughout !
I am literally screaming 😂😂😂😂
I wanna do this I know so little about my grandparents from Greece
Lmaoo yall r unhinged
Does Leah Michelle even know of Anna Vissi ??? She is one of the most famous Greek Cypriot singers.

the title is so fitting
I don't understand. A lot of people who immigrated from Europe couldn't read or write in their census records.
There's a joke online that Lea Michele can't read or write so they are playing off that

Mine came earlier from Ireland 🇮🇪 we're illiterate. But they came before 1860
People came from all over the world, invited or taken....
Of large majority of people’s great grandmother’s couldn’t read or write - depending on your age.
How’s this a burn?
There’s long been an internet joke that Lea can’t read or write. 🙈

That's where the spilling the seed story comes in.

Wow!
We looked up our history and we went back 10 generations and we never found a document saying we were from anywhere other than American
Does that mean that you'ew family was originall Native American? Ptherwise what you say is impossible.
@Loraine Levi Osage and Apache. My DNA is equal parts Native American and Aztlan or Aztec with small percentage of Scandinavian
Then what happened?
My name is Bonnita

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
When she asked about the conditions that she was held in, it seemed like she was hoping it was bad with the way she was pulling on her ear
Hey it runs in the family.
I'M DYING LAUGHING AT THESE COMMENTS
So what happened next
Lmao
She looks like greatgrandmother
lmao
and so can't she 🤣
I wonder which of the Ellis Island staff she bullied when the camera stopped rolling? probably the smallest, most frail person she could find
Well at least she can say she’s got something in common with her great grandmother.
Its a family tradition
STAWP LMAO
Don't know who SHE thinks she is, but I haven't the foggiest of idea of whom this person is! 🙂
so illiteracy is hereditary?
come on thats a bit .....
