I work as a ski teacher and I wish half of my students were learning as quickly as this guy lol. Generally, I would say that the two most insurmountable obstacles for first-timers are learning to actually come to a complete stop and to plough-turn. Those who struggle with the first of the two problems seem to simply lack the necessary hip flexibility and power in their legs to create that friction which will bring you to a complete snow-plough stop. For what concerns the second one, I notice that most beginners tend to stretch and lock their inside leg when attempting a turn: this results in them edging their inside ski thus making it impossible for them to rotate it; their way of skiing looks like a bunch of aborted turns. I try to explain my students that they need to bend that inside leg and keep that inside ski flat, but some just don't get it. I also noticed that the slowest learners are unsurprisingly those who come from hot countries (Singapore & Brazil, the absolute worst), and in general I can't help but acknowledge that a lot of people never do any sports, even when back at home, and once they put their skis on, their sedentary lifestyle shows all its repercussions.
I grew up skiing when I was in grade school but couldn’t afford it after I graduated. I now have access to skiing again and this was a much needed refresher to build confidence to try it again. 🙏🏽
hi floss , thanks for the tips , i am getting back into skiing after a 10 year break , I'm 63yrs old and will use your tips , great video and look forward to more info on your next video cheers ,, rob in Australia
Thanks Rob for your comments. Enjoy Australia. The snow over there started really well this season. ????Is there a particular video that you would like to see? Thanks Floss 😁
Great video!!! I learned more with you in this video than in 3 days in Chamonix with private lessons!!! I hope I can contact you and get some new lessons next time I manage to go to a sky resort in Europe!!!
Hi there, thanks for your message it means a lot. I am so sorry to hear of your bad experience in Chamonix. I have had so much bad coaching and waste of time lessons in my career. Let me know how I can help you moving forwards? videos, coaching on the hill and coaching online? I have a private FB group facebook.com/groups/theskiingclub it is easier to reach me inside or join my newsletter on my website: www.freefloski.com to keep in touch. Thanks and speak soon, Floss
Interesting stuff Floss. I've realised that I don't really know how to snowplow. I learnt to snowplow turn by weighting one ski and unweighting the other, not by rotating. Always things to learn...
You must have rotated your legs & feet to make the snowplough/pizza slice shape before any weighting & unweighting. If you hadn’t rotated your legs and feet your skis would have been parallel
Great video, I’m picking up more techniques from you…I started skiing last Feb and self taught myself on a bunny hill, I’m 52 and hoping it’s not too late to start at this age, I find it fun. I’m going next week again with my 17 year old son at Blue Mountain him on proper ski slopes me on the bunny hill to practice some more and my husband he was a great skier before but his knees bother him when skiing so he’ll read a book in the hotel room…😂
Well Done Moss, you're skating skill for a beginner were extremely good, well done. Now that you're on skis ... Its like eating with chop sticks raher than a spoon. Hi Floss we know that piste very well down the back of the Taos. Looking forward to seeing you in December.
As a snowboarder who has never skied but is going to learn, this was very interesting. Pity, didn’t say how or how good Moss is at boarding. I have been boarding for 20 years now, and at 52 finding all the bending down to strap in, lifts etc, getting a bit tiresome.
Thanks for your comment. Morse is a strong snowboarder. He now does both sports as he gets tired of the strapping in too... thanks for watching ..floss
Wow!! Really enjoyed watching this, thank you. I haven't been skiing for seven years, and this was a great theory refresher. By the way, what was the resort?
Terrific vid , thank you . Liked and subbed . I’ve not skied in 10 years but love the sport . I like Espace Killy as well . I’m 59 now and thinking of selling my small apartment in York and buy a one bed apartment in Bourg st Maurice and a season lift pass for Arc and Espace Killy , only trouble is after Brexit we can only stay for 6 months . I may as well enjoy life while I’m still fit enough. Thanks.
@@FreeFloFloss thank you , your vids are very helpful. I really think I’ll do it . I can buy a used mobile home near to sea for the 6 months I have to spend in the Uk .
When staying at a hotel 10 min from the ski resort. Should you wear your ski boots on way to resort or carry them and wait until your at the resort to put them on?
@@FreeFloFloss I’m coming to Zermatt Switzerland next April and hoping to do some simple ski just to enjoy the atmosphere there, if the weather allows. Thanks for asking and hopefully you have good pieces of advice to share 🙏
First day yesterday i did a green slope that was fast asf and a slope with ramps and i almost broke my leg flying off one and not landing correctly and i didnt have a lesson
Why learn that kind of turning when in reality you turn differently ? Had my first time experience this winter. On a big slope fell almost every turn. You cant turn fast enough, so it get uncomfortably fast for beginner. On the 2nd day went alone, didnt fell at all. Isnt that turning used on flat ground on normal skis ?
The theory is that if you learn that type of turning you learn important steps of rotation and pressure control so then when you go into parallel you have the tools and you don`t hit a plateau.
I hope you like this video.. if you have any comments please drop them below 👇

How much do snow ski shoes cost in your country?

I often wait and out them on in resort
Good reference for me a roller-blader/surf skater to learn how to ski. How long he took to do parallel turn and do ski on real slopes?

Tignes in France 😁
DONT' have people even remotely adjusting their own bindings. Most will end up in A&E
Interesting to see chemtrails in France also
