Acclaimed drummer for Toto and session player for other greats like Jeff Beck, The Who, Judas Priest, Tears for Fears, Simon shares some playing and covers topics like: Concentrating on time while playing. How he used to play with his right hand, now he plays more with his left gives him better results. Using feet techniques while playing double bass rhythm. As a kid he was not allowed to listen to rock music, only classical music. He was thankful for that, because it has helped him with his drumming technique. He talks about being on tour with The Who, and shares two stories. He discusses chemistry between band members. Tempo and how important it is. Practicing Rudiments

Saw Simon at a clinic at Drum Headquarters in St. Louis in 1983 - My head exploded!
Simon is just a Engine.pumping relentless perfection.
How he leads left and right effortlessly. Is mind blowing
one of the best drummers in our times
Mr. Phillips is legendary and truly one of the greatest drummers alive. The way he plays left or right leads and fills are only one of his secret weapons. Everything he does looks effortless. It was in the early 90's when I started following this talented dude. Always musical and fun to watch. No wonder he has filled in for some of our most legendary drummers that are no longer with us. Whenever I see a Simon Phillips video I have to watch no matter how old. Plus he is a great teacher and gives superb tuning advice. Also love his tasteful use of dynamics. I forget how entertaining he is as a speaker too.
What a find! Such a legend.
This is actually brilliant! The guy is a legend
ACE find !,.. Stil my all time fave drummer,.. Kudos,.. :D
THANK YOU FOR POSTING SIMON PHILLIPS THROWBACK THURSDAY MEANS ALOT!!! THEN 1992 SIMON GETS THE CALL TO BE APART OF THE TOTO FAMILY!!! GOD BLESS BROTHER JEFF PORCARO!!!
This is priceless.. a free drum clinic with a master player.. thank you for posting this :)
Flixportal :P
There is some incredible grooves on this, and Simon kit sound has always been legendary. Such a skillful player.
especially that snare! POP CRACK
What a laid back nice guy, the who Jeff beck.fantastic drummer. Legend
Just a great roll model for all the younger drummers in the 80s and 90s.
*role model.
My dad has this nearly exact kit In White, and I play open handed, so watching this was almost like watching my dad play
Also he plays open handed too
He`s so great!
Simon is incredible. I am in absolute awe when he switches hands so fluidly on the hi-hat at 50:13...a stunning display of independence and blazing speed. I've never seen anything quite like it.
Has anyone ever done that before? If so, please post examples that are youtube, I'd love to watch them.
Billy Cobham is a fantastic ambidextrous player: ua-cam.com/video/KUNtaGMZyM0/v-deo.html&ab_channel=DavidV.
He has just copied Billy Cobham.... Cobham is the best fusion drummer !¡
@@jojoremeny Copied, man, really?! SP is a massive great player in his own right, and deserved better than "just copied". That said, some of his technique was inspired by Billy Cobham, yes, he says so himself, and credits him at around 26:45.
Thanks for the replies, except for the disrespectful "copied" comment; it serves no purpose. Thumb down for that. I guess what I was really asking for is whether anyone has ever seen the technique in switching hands so quickly in that particular way on the hi-hat and cymbal. It is incredible to watch.
Very slick. Simon is a monster tour de force in the business.
First time I heard him was with Stanley Clarke Rock Pebbles Sand album he was a kid then Amazing Drummer
Like Weckl back then, much better and more fun listen to. Quite fascinating actually.
wow this is way better than his instructional vid coz his joking a lot and feels much happier hehe nice!
I saw this clinic tour at the Channel in Boston, I remember my local drum store guy being so frustrated because Simon was throwing RAWK STAR attitude about the stage and setup, and Joey Kramer rolling up in a 911 and Jonathan Mover in a yellow Corvette. Good times!
i believe they called those POWER toms! things are huge...lol Love Simon always stayed true to his gear...this was his kit...even with Hiromi...never will a double pedal duplicate two bass drums...this was just before he joined TOTO...man Jeff was alive when this took place!
I love his stuff with Mike Oldfield.
TBT..wow its awdome. I love the mix of spaceboogie and you freeform solo stuff is worldclass and second to none.
Simon Phillips and Danny Carey will always be my all time favorite drummers!
His drums always sound like Simon Phillips drums. Be it Starclassic Maple, Star Maple or an Artstar II kit like in this video, unmistakable drummer.
great !
Totaly insane !
I liked Simon he play Modern style+ Japan star!!! Tama.
Does anyone know if Simon ever played V8 live anywhere? I have him improving over it but not performing the actual track.
Master
Simon should be the voice of the Geico Gecko.
What track is he playing at 1:07:00? I'd love to find the studio recording of that.
It's the song 'Protocol' from his debut album of the same name. You can find it in UA-cam and streaming sites such as Spotify.
@@Prisha-so6rm Thank you very much! Been jamming to it nonstop. I hardly ever see meaningful replies on UA-cam, so I definitely appreciate it 😁👍
And this is just his warm up exercise :)
Who's the guitar player in the intro song? Sounds surprisingly much like John Petrucci, so I gather it could be someone who influenced him.
Probably Ray Vise
What song is he playing over to start?
His bass drums sound awesome here. Not that click-y sound he usually goes for. More of that natural shell tone.
He plays ride left and right hand???
Yes
Simon Phillips the white Billy Cobham, i like him .
ON ENTEND RIEN À LA BATTERIE QUAND Y A LA MUSIQUE
11:09 wow
Garth!
música...
Too bad in the second half his drums were not loud enough in the mix.
He plays a lot like me.
Awesome clinic! too bad the drum mix didnt really come through on the force majeure and protocol performances
Simon your a great player , but I hear a lot of Billy Cobham in your performance
Love SImon drumming but Billy is the godfather of the open drumming
And the great Lenny white of course
Too many great players to keep up with!
Alejandro Martinez Eduardo Navas
The cymbals are too low! Lack of consistent projection!
Can I see some licks?? Lmao wtf
Froid et pénible ... quand on a l'habitude de Virgil Donati.
J'ai pas cette impression quand j'écoute Sin after sin de Judas Priest , Msg ou David coverdale 's whitesnake .
🤓🥁👍🏼
