  • Reimagining traditional sculpture through a feminist lens, sculptor Rebecca Stevenson takes inspiration from grotesque design and the body. Working in wax, bronze, clay and plaster, she explores notions of presence, absence and transformation, reshaping the meaning that sculpture can hold.
Responding to Renaissance works including those by Donatello during her residency, watch as she gives us an insight into her process, carefully making and then ‘unmaking’ her pieces.

I loved the Goliath's head!! The 'peeling away' respecting the material was incredible, it ended up looking almost like a strange mushroom or a coral I think, it was beautiful

I adored this video, being able to hear directly from Rebecca what her goals and inspirations were for each piece and then to see the process was fantastic and so interesting. This is a fantastic video you guys- clearly the filming for this video was done over several days to get the footage of different stages of these wonderful sculptures. I really appreciate videos like this.

Astounding work! The beauty and grotesque in the second piece of Goliath is amazing. Bravo!
To add- I love how the second Goliath resembled a conch shell. Very feminine

Why did she use an armature for the initial clay head of Goliath? Wouldn’t it have worked just as well without it, as it would have been just a full piece of clay? Or did she want it to be lighter, in order to more easily handle it?

They're aesthetically pleasing heads, for sure. I like that pink was a manly colour in the Renaissance, so the past itself refutes the nasty binary colour-coding that tries to box women in to marketing groups.

    • @lactarius7781

a 'grotesque' is simply a motif in art with human figures that are bizarre and often as she said 'morph' into other beings, natural things and objects, it doesn't have the same negative connotation in art and architecture as in everyday use :))

Being the V & A, one would expect the handler to use gloves of some kind in the handling process. But apparently, preserving the material isn't a concern.

Gloves can cause the person to tear or mishandle items in some cases. They lack the tactile quality to safely turn pages, for example. They aren't always used, and for good reason.

If you're referring to the drawings in the beginning, gloves aren't always the best for preserving archival material, particularly paper and books. There are some hazards to handling delicate paper with a diminished sense of touch, and that lack of tactile feedback is the reason some archivists believe thorough and repeated hand washing to remove oil build up before handling materials to be better precautions than gloves.
As gloves are inevitably slightly larger than your hands, they can also impair hand proprioception, leading to an increased risk of the glove snagging on fragile or brittle edges. Our hands are very dexterous and capable of fine and careful movement, but gloves can, in some circumstances, provide more drawbacks than benefit.
The Smithsonian has a good blog post about this, titled "No Love for White Gloves, or: The Cotton Menace". Although it discusses book preservation rather than drawings, I would imagine similar dynamics apply with the drawings shown in the video, as you can see that the artist Rebecca handles the drawings on the edges, as one would do with pages in a book.
