  • FOR POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: See pinned comments and other comments below. The bad news is that it looks like if your printer is out of warranty, you might need to open up most of the printer to fix it. If you do find an alternative/easier solution, please do share below!
Problem Description: The printer suddenly and randomly started grinding this way. It seemed to think it had a carriage jam. I followed the instructions to clear paper jams to the tee, but the issue persisted.

I fixed it using a piece of acrylic (4mm) under the right side carriage. The problem is that the teeth on the right side carriage are ground down, so you have to put the acrylic below this carriage (glued to the bottom of the printer) pushing the carriage up. You may use double sided tape as well. I used acrylic, but the material doesn't matter much, it just has to be a flat surface that raises significantly the right side carriage.
To do this you have to open the top of the printer, remove the scanner bed, remove the printer head rails/carriage assembly and lift the right side carriage. Then glue the acrylic sheet to the bottom of the right side of the printer, below the carriage. Put the carriage back and make sure that it slides back and forth, but raised a little bit. assemble everything and it should work.
This printer sucks, I will not fiz mine again if it breaks, I'll buy anything other than an HP printer.

Hi Guilherme, Did you have to disassemble the printer to fix it? Can you share more details on where to push it up? the carriage moves back and forth from right to left, so how do you lift it up?

@@mikeeichorst left right? Yeah that's true but when it's on the right side it still can move a bit farther and that's where the problem starts.Mine has the same problem and i got a second hand one for 20 bucks and it works just fine. But i would really appreciate if i could get an answer from anyone to fix it so i can give it to my brother.

@@proxyhx2075 Managed to fix it but had to disassemble the printer completely and where the carriage moves back and forth (not right and left) there is a gear rail and placed a plastic piece pushing the carriage up a bit in order to make it work on the rail. This is a 4-5 mm max that still permits the carriage to pass over it.

Watching this is cracking me up because of how my printer made the EXACT same noise. It was fun when I needed to print something late at night and suddenly the printer started making that awful LOUD grinding noise. It was random and not regular for me. But I have no complaints really because I bought this printer probably 5 years ago and have had little trouble with it. I think reading below that the broken teeth cause this noise and that now my printer has a carriage jam with an incessant error code "C4EBA341" on a blue screen helps me see that the two are related. Since it's been 5+ years and, like, technology & electronics, I'm buying a new printer.
If you are considering a purchase of this model, it's EASY to use. The scanning carriage broke about 3-4 years after I bought it, but I didn't care too much and kept going. But the ink, in my opinion, is ridiculously expensive if you buy it from hp. And if you buy refills or off-brand ink for about 20% of the full price of hp, the printer has a little snit and makes you "ok" to proceed and warns you that warranties will not be honored. Just letting you know.

Yes I have the same problem. This must be my 4th hp printer that will end up in the local council tip. Time to buy a different brand name.

Ive fixed it by adding additional washer under metal part that connect with cleaning part. That will create additional pressure to the gears, and they will stop slipping. I wish i could post some photos :(

I was able to fix it. The problem was in the carrier that is on the right side of the printer, it had two broken teeth. I bought the new part online and made the change but I had to disassemble almost all the printer. Goodbye and good luck.

I bought on a kind of eBay ("Mercado Livre") available in my country. It was the part that is on the right side below the printhead. It was sold to me as a cleaning station, but it may have a different name, and it's the same part present on the HP 4625. It took me some work to disassemble and change but I think it was worth. I hope it helped you.

Sorry, I have no solution yet. My printers's out of warranty and HP in my country says I need to pay to show them what the problem is... so it works out better to buy a new printer!
