Thanks from the bottom of my heart for putting this on UA-cam.
I love this concert more and more each time I listen to it.
Don Potter's voice, Chuck's music and arrangements...just heartbreakingly beautiful. Wish I could have been there.

My guitar teacher Stanley Watson was in that performance. Seeing him next to Jerry N. broght a tear to my eye. He sadly passed a few years later.

I was truly privileged to have been in the audience on May 9, 1970 to see this concert. I was familiar with the work of both Gap and Chuck Mangione because I got to see them perform live at the Shakespeare Restaurant in downtown Rochester, where I was a 17 year old busboy. Great job! For three nights a week, I saw Gap Mangione, Tony Levin, and Steve Gadd (!) perform on the stage in the center of the circular bar at the heart of the restaurant. They played from 5 to 7. Then at 10:30, Chuck and his quartet played until 1. This was my first exposure to real jazz and it was a revelation. The "Friends & Love" concert was of course awesome. A good friend from Irondequoit High School (Mick Guzauski) was the engineer on this recording. None of us had any inkling of how successful Chuck would eventually be. For that matter, Mick also went on to do great things. Seeing this concert again makes me remember those exciting days.

I too was there at this Friends and Love Concert in 1970 - but surely didn't remember the date - so thanks for that Mike! It was a Greece NY HS field trip for me - but they all inspired me to keep singing, and playing guitar and keyboards to this day.....

I lived in CT. but had relatives in Rochester, Pittsford & Greece and a cousin that taught English Lit at John Fisher. Wish I could have seen these guys at a small venue, I loved the Vanguard, & Bottom line in N.Y.C....but I did get to the concert with the Philharmonic in '70.
After all these years, I can still remember it...wonderful orchestration and synchronicity between all musicians. It was wonderful and still makes my heart smile. I loved the rhythm clapping..which was unusual for classical musicians to get into that kind of groove
I bought the album, I had a great stereo, great speakers, great needle. I may have worn out a needle or two.

How awesome, thanks for sharing your memories. I was born in '67 so was definitely not there, but having played this album and watching the excellent WXXI production repeatedly continually since childhood, and seeing Chuck countless times, had rounded out the education i received from one of his Eastman contemporaries beautifully. Local jazz lives!❤

I could listen to Friends and Love all day. I'm so sorry I missed Bat and Don's induction into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame. Thanks so much for this treasure.

That would be wonderful, since I was unable to get a seat, as you said, sold oit so quick. This has been my favorite work since I first heard it at maybe 13 years old, 1980. My music mentor graduated 3fd ir 4th in his class at Eastman, either ahead of or behind Chuck. He arranged for him, and that connection meant so much to me as a child musician. My upbringing was centered in the value of composition, arrangement, and, well, class! Don Potter, Bat McGrath, Chuck and Gap, Jerry Neiwood, Steve Gadd, all heros of mine. That this all came from home always blew me away, like dies everyone grow up with this kind of local talent?

Enjoyed reading all the comments from people who were there as a kid and were inspired by Chuck's music, especially those who were musicians. I wasn't born yet at this time, but my mom took me to Chuck's Rochester Sesquicentennial Concert at the Eastman Theater in 1984, and that concert was a huge inspiration for me. It made me want to become a composer and musician, and while I didn't have the talent to do either professionally, I still play and write for fun to this day. What a great and underrated musician, composer, and arranger Chuck Mangione is.

I still get chills up my spine on hearing this concert again I first heard on a local HS music field trip in 1970! I eventually met Don, Pat and Chuck personally who all inspired me to keep chasing my dreams I achieved as a local 369 Vegas musician while attending UNLV as a Hotel Admin student... They all changed my life enough to motivate me to end up meeting and playing with some of the greatest horn players like Harry James, and Al Hirt... Harry James ended up a close friend of mine to the end of his life in the early 80s. My aspirations as a guitarist and keyboard player have only been to play with the greatest musicians I've admired in life. I've played guitar next to all of them but Chuck Mangione - but did end up accompanying his brother once on keyboards. But Don't "Duke Jupiter" or "Rain" on my Greece NY musical parade here - or Gates on our Lou Grammatico. Only old Roch cha cha locals will get my references here! I'm certainly not even close to remember now as an old dude divorced from two Vegas born and reared women who is now now single and retired in the overtly too conservative penis state of Floriduh. But the photo of me now in my 60s here is quite recent..

You have to picture the situation here. The Vietnam war was fully on at this point. To a young person at that time (I was 14) it seemed like the world outside my little life was exploding. War, riots, assassinations, serial murderers. Yet also, great promise. We were walking on the moon. The Beatles were still together. The music on the radio was remarkable at that time.
And into this was dropped this incredible concert. Chuck Mangione was at the time a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music. This concert was his Masters' thesis.
This concert was like nothing I'd ever heard before (or since I'm bound to say). It seemed to precisely capture everything about that magic moment in history, for me.

@103648499621405530127 Rarely, very rarely. His brother Gap is still active, tours with his band. I believe the reason that this album hasn't been re-released has something to do with rights. The concert was broadcast on public television station WXXI, and the ownership of it is not clearly defined. Or at least that's what I was told by someone many years ago. There is another problem, though. The equipment used to capture the recording was quite primitive. You can see one sign of this in the concert itself; the microphones used by Bat McGrath, Don Potter, Stanley Watson, etc., are cheap "A.V." quality, the same type you could find in any high-school auditorium sound system of that time. Poor dynamic range, lots of noise, etc. I don't know what kind of mix board and recording equipment was used, but I would guess that it was quite primitive.Chuck's favorite sound engineer Mick Guzauski was just a kid then, still in high school (if I'm not mistaken). Mr. Guzauski went on to become one of the most sought-after recording engineers in the country, working with some very big-name performers. His name is mentioned in the album notes for Friends and Love, but for all his talent and skills he was just a beginner, and we all have to start somewhere.

Correct me if I am wrong, I'm sure some one will, lol, This is Gap conducting with Chuck playing in back stage left yeah? During the middle of recording(dixieland part), it seems as though Gap may be a bit lost or behind in the score when big brother Chuck provides a little extra air to his trumpet which gets Bat's attention and gets him caught up. I could be totally wrong, just what it seems to me. @ AAMMIRR, yes that is very cool. The guitarist seems almost entranced and awed by the emotion the sax player is able to convey. I was eight years old when this was recorded. My mom had it and played it often, now I watch it regularly here. Thank you for posting it. P.S. Watch classical guitarist's fingers as he plays, staggering!
