    Thanks for speaking out about all the hate, John. The Standard is meant to be the innovative guitar. Gibson sells Traditional models for those who don't want the new features. I think people get it confused thinking Standard should be the one that never changes. I dunno. Either way, there are LPs for every flavor. So not sure why people are upset... just don't buy it.

    • @stanislavmigra

      Imo standard should also have all acces neck and it will make complete sense to me. For those who dont "like" inovative stuff, there still is traditional model.

    • @inevitableveganfuture3915

      I think there was a time that they had this mixed up, 2013 had some weird disjointed guitars from a design heritage perspective. I had a "50's Tribute" SG which had virtually zero authentic 50's features and a Les Paul Traditional which had a very modern replaceable nut, click-in no-screw pickguard and G-Force tuners! Don't get me wrong, best 2 guitars I ever owned, but they're confused in terms of design. Now I think Gibson has got that figured out. Build the traditionals the traditional way, and put those new innovative features in the Standard.

    • @inevitableveganfuture3915
      @inevitableveganfuture3915 6 років тому +1

      Sean Brooks You're absolutely right the SG is a 60's guitar, the model I mentioned is called the "50's Tribute SG" and was produced for a short time in 2013...it's a tribute to what an SG would look like if it was made in the 50's!
      But then experts really picked it apart, it's got the wrong knobs for the era, 24 frets, and some mean modern output P90 pickups. It's a killer guitar but it feels more 70's to me, it screams Iommi and Zappa. I think it's a symbol of Gibson missing the mark, if they'd marketed the exact model differently and slapped on a different name, I think it would have been very popular.

    Yep totally agree with John, I got a 2017 les paul standard t in honey burst and its like the ferrari of guitars, and I've had a lot of them, even older les pauls, it's light weight, sounds awesome, plays awesome, and I use the push pull pots all the time as it makes the instrument even More versatile, sad fact is there are people who will hate on everything just to hate.

    I like the blueberry burst color, but I think the knob caps shouldn’t be brownish... either aluminum or crystal transparent or whatever, but not brown, it doesn’t fit with the blue color... but thank god, that could be an easy fix and it’s not as important as everything else. My 2¢

    • @Spidouz
      @Spidouz 6 років тому +13

      PS: regarding the internet being a dick, Gibson can’t win. When Gibson doesn’t out any new features and just release what they have been doing before, the internet cry out loud: “Dude, Gibson is dead, they don’t innovate anymore!”. Then Gibson do innovate and release new features, and then the internet cry out loud: “Dude, Gibson is over, they can’t even release a good basic classic/traditional guitar like they were doing in the past!”. Haters are gonna hate...

      They are the classic Amber knobs, which I think look great. But the HP version has the chrome pickup rings and transparent knobs that also love.

    • @billyarsenault1970
      @billyarsenault1970 6 років тому

      Change the knobs then brother. I literally stripped ALL that hardware off my last 2 new Sg's (17/18) HP's.
      I am actually just gonna be buying them without hardware for now on. Never new that was possible. Perfect for me.
      And no harm - I needed a few complete guitars to keep me going in the meantime.
      And also got aluminum flight cases both years. So All is good.
      Didn't strip out the 57' classics though- but I guess that considered electronics anyway.
      But yeah- I realize it's insanity to have to strip down a brand new $2000 grand guitar - and then buy all high-end hardware from Germany.
      But these new SG' are sick weapons if you mod them out.
      Of course I eventually want Custom Shop guitars from Gibson or Surh.
      But it's cool to have a couple weapons that your not petrified somethings gonna happen to. So if you bought a newer Gibson recently-
      Start by throwing out the robo- tuners.
      For the love of god just do it already. Those things suck in every way.
      Then just keep it rolling.
      Gibson makes a sweet full contact tail peice with fine tuners- and then Schaller for the bridge , locking tuners and even Brass knobs.
      What's ironic is that once you get rid of RobotTuners you might want the old brass zero fret nut back to replace the titanium ones.
      You won't be needing to tune this thing up often so don't worry about wearing out brass.
      The more mass the better on an SG. They resonate like an acoustic when you load em down with brass. Awesome.
      And the only way it's ever going out of tune is if you do it intentionally.
      The alternatives pointless - been there done that already.
      I'm not satisfied with other guitars as my go to.
      Just want my Gibson SG's because I can always count on them to be consistent and make me wanna play.

I think that that 1800-2000 is a good price for the quality of a Gibson being made in Nashville anything more than that especially when you get in the 3k-4k range you could get a used custom shop for that price so it wouldn't make buying a new one pointless

    Great review. I think people are overreacting on the dip switches. It's not like you going to be playing a gig and flipping dip switches as you start a solo. (Someone will read this and try to be the first now) The tonal palate on this guitar is amazing. All of these options would really be of value in a studio. If you hate these options and just want to rock, roll with the Traditional. Incredible slide playing by the way!

    Amazing to me to me as well the people sperging out over the new Les Pauls. To complain about push pull pots and internal dip switches is petty as all hell. They're basically complaining the guitar is too versatile. If you're Tele breaks a string you can get close enough and carry through with your Les Paul. You don't even have to see the dip switches and you don't have to use the push pull pots if you don't want to. And the Les Paul they really want is available as the "Les Paul Traditional". Seriously, what is the flippin' problem?

    Never seen this guy before, and I really enjoyed his monologue. I didn't want to agree with the points made, but when you do stop and remember that Gibson has always been evolving the guitar; you have to conceded this point. My bias (now former bias), was that when I thought Gibson, it was the standard, the original, "pure", etc... But now, conceding that the Les Paul has always evolved, a "purist" if honest, would have to appreciate the innovation and evolution of the Les Paul.

My 2009 Traditional LP is a fantastic guitar and it has the push pull feature, which I use all the time. It’s got the classic LP punch we all love but you can also make it twangy. Nothing wrong with that. This video just proves that the new guitars are still good. Someone will find something they don’t like, but others will love it.

    People complain about Big Henry and Gibson. However, let me tell you I have collected guitars from 1969 up and the guitars they have made are extremely good. There Historic series are as close to the originals as there has ever been. Henry has done an extremely good job in bring back the beauty of the instruments since the horrific days of Norlin. The Historic Les Pauls are excellent. I will say that the carved top has not been as accurate as I think they should be on this model. But, they keep on working at it. Remember, these are people like you and I that are building these instruments and they take pride in their work. They do an excellent job. So quit your moaning. Id be happy to send a picture of what I had to play on in the 1960's.

    If you want to hang out with people who like Les Paul's, come on over to Trogly's Guitar Show. The young man is passionate about the Gibson heritage, collectors models, and the like. He always features something unique, and I've learned a tremendous amount from him. Everybody in the comments is super cool, no negative vibes. Just honest fans of the guitar. That said, I'm one of those traditionalists who dislikes push/pull and the guitar looks naked without a poker chip and a pick guard. I even prefer the Klusons. But for certain, Gibson knows their shit. Their guitars sound amazing year after year. The monster sound, Les Paul. It's like cutting on Marshall's newest amp (whatever that is, idk). Marshall's always sound killer. It's what they do.

    I've never owned a Gibson Les Paul guy (usually a Stratocaster guy, except for my Peavey Wolfgangs), but I just bought a 2019 Standard 2 weeks ago. I didn't care for the factory setup but after having it setup the way I like by my local tech it really plays great. I love all the options. The more I play it, the more I find I really enjoy playing it. It took me a day or two to get use to it, but the more I play, the more comfortable it becomes. One option John forgot to mention was if you pull the Bridge Pickup Tone Pot you can also choose inner or outer coil when they are split/tapped. Tons of tonal versatility in the guitar. Still deciding on Split vs Tapped but love the Treble Bleed mod.

    Say what you will, but I'm happy Gibson is still producing guitars despite all the trouble they've been having lately. If I had a job right now I'd definitely consider buying one of these new ones. I'm actually starting to make heavy mods on my older style Gibsons and it's cool that you can buy one brand new which already has all those features you'd add. I'm guessing Frank Zappa would've liked these. He might've added 2-3 extra switches anyway though ahahah!

    At last. Someone speaking sense. I agree that without innovation we would still be driving Model T Fords (not in UK, actually).So long as Gibson still provide the Traditional then regardless of what they call the model "The Standard" can continue to change. I bought a 2015 Standard despite the madness about them. I didn't need the robots but I liked so many of the other changes including the wide neck. If you ignore the robots and look at the guitar it is a GREAT guitar. If the robots stop working I will have ordinary tuners fitted and it will still be a great guitar. I hate relic'ing but that is just my opinion and it you want to buy one like that it is up to you. It is so good to read a great guitarist being sensible without worrying about the flak. Thank you John.

    *But* 15 years ago, or so, when I started playing, the LP Standard only cost £1500 and, although it was still a lot of money, even as a small kid it seemed like something that wasn't impossibly unattainable, that one day - with 8 years of saving up all my money and spending nothing at all - I could possibly afford one (which I naively assumed was possible).
    I know we've destroyed the value of the pound with Brexit and that even before that it hadn't recovered from the financial crash (when a LP Standard cost £1500, the £ was worth double the USD), however I'm now in my 20s and £3000+ is an amount I can never imagine being able to spend on a guitar whereas I have spent just under £1500 on one.
    The Standard seems to have gone from a guitar that was attainable and relatively affordable for a hardworking musician to a guitar that's only viable for those with serious money (i.e. it's no longer for me).

    I agree, just enjoy! Last week I purchased a studio model and it has push/pull volumes. I think all of the positions either sound classic, and then you can use the extra settings for new sounds. I did comment (dickeshly haha) ) about the control of the new standards, but I spent more time on how people criticize new things, hold on to reverence of old guitars, but then ask for new things. “Man its just another strat so what, oh and did you see that stupid modern feature on it?” They can’t win. My thoughts on this one were just wondering if it would be a positive for the company. I love my Gibson, don’t understand the hate. Some of the people bashing don’t even have the guitars. Pretty silly.

    The thing that kills everyone is the price. When I started in 2007, a standard was 2400 to 2600. No push pulls, dip switches, strange neck or nut. This guitars is at a custom shop price. I don't think the feature set is bad, if anything it has the mods people would do to it already in it so I don't see why people are complaining about that. Any if you didn't want that part, don't pull the knobs. If they removed a lot of the filler guitars and just did Jr's, Specials, Studios Standards and Custom, I think it would be alright with a price adjustment. They basically have 4 guitars from studio tribute to traditional that cover the same area. And that's a price range from 1200 to 2800

    The new stuff is neat, one day it will be old and people will appreciate it more. I have a 1994 Studio and it sounds as good or better than the day I bought it new. Play it through a peavey classic 50 w 4 10s (Ugliest best sounding amp). When i bought mine in 1994, all people talked about was the "old ones". Well, now mine is an old one...

    I agree, if Gibson doesn’t innovate then someone will just do it and then claim “it’s the guitar Gibson should’ve built”. The 2015 robot tuner things was really only a bad thing because it wasn’t an option. My issue with Gibson is the spotty QC and it would be nice to see them fix the headstock weakness bring back the volutes maybe. It would be nice if the the Traditional Les paul was really a vintage spec guitar and the standard could be the ongoing changes guitar and keep the HP series for more modern stuff. Maybe epiphone neck angle and volute for standard and HP. And for the love of god stop shipping $1600-2500 guitars that look like someone ran a rasp over the frets and fingerboard.

    Firstly, congratulations on your new 2019 Gibson Les Paul mate 👍. She looks killer and sounds rockin too.
    Secondly, I don’t get all the hate either. I think Gibson are now making really good guitars again (after a few years of not so great guitars) they returned to form in 2016 imo. I got a 2016 Standard and a 2017 Classic and they are both really good guitars (you can check them out on my channel 👍). I actually think Gibson is getting very close to perfecting the Les Paul - I even like the weight relief (great for playing live 👏👏) they just need the all access cutaway on the neck joint for greater access to the upper frets and a belly cut and she’s near perfect 👌 (like my Godin’s basically haha)
    And for those who like it old school - Gibson have that covered with the ‘Traditional’. What’s not to like? 1 Thing imo ‘THE PRICE’ !!!the new price hike on the 2019 Range is ridiculous. Every year there’s an increase (we accept that,most of us anyway) but this year is crazy. So I won’t be putting my hand in my pocket this year and I expect either will many more. But I wish Gibson well and a speedy financial recovery and I wish you many happy hours of rockin on your killer new Lester 👍

    Couldn't agree more. A Les Paul standard in 2018/19 should be an evolution of the previous generation, not the exact same thing. Besides, Gibby still makes the traditional model if what you're after is the 50s/60s Paul. I think the company has been making positive strides in its lineup and its quality the last year or two.

  • @droliver

    Great video, John.
    I don't get the hate on Gibson either. They make a lot of options in the line for people who want to be frozen with a late 1950's design.
    I do however, think they've made a poor choice to add these as an on board circuits, as that kind of think never ages well and becomes difficult to repair or obsolete quickly. It makes a guitar (the Les Paul) people choose for simplicity, into something else and I think people will avoid it like the plague even though, as you noted, leaving the settings alone make it a "normal" LP sound. I'd much prefer to see experimenting with hardware (locking tuners), longer scale lengths, and a neck joint redesign to tweak it.

      all of your "I agree -- WHY Gibson get so much hate?" comments are by people who DON'T KNOW ANY OF THE SCANDALS.
      See any problem with people who do NOT KNOW the details, posting empty, meaningless comments?
      That's not ethical!

    • @droliver
      @droliver 6 років тому +1

      There is no "scandal" with people ranting on Gibson. Most of them are people being petulant about an industry they have no insight on. Gibson has for sure made some miss-steps with things like the Robo-tuners and acquiring some other companies/IP that put on too much debt, but their guitars are still very high quality at the scale they're manufacturing at. Videos complaining about incremental updates to their LP standard ignore the history of development of their guitars (and others).

    YES!!!!! OH MAN THANK YOU FOR THIS BREATH OF FRESH AIR. Yes there are so many people hating on and pissing on Gibson. Outside of the price issue, none of this bashing makes any logical sense. Even worse, a lot of that ire seems to be targeted at the Standard, even though there are other guitars in the line to choose from. So many say, 'I don't like dip-switches' '..don't need push pull pots' etc. That's why the Traditional and Classics were around. If you like it traditional, get the traditional.
    Yes the level of negativity is both disappointing and unwarranted. (again, except for the price. That price does need to come down). THANK YOU GREATLY John for talking about what's good with the guitar, and it is a GREAT guitar. Wish there were more Standards on display online. Great review and run through of the features. (I'm a bit jealous. Have an older Standard without the dips.)

    This is the best review yet of this guitar. Rather than bitch about it, John demos the sounds, describes the feel, and explains what the circuits do. Those circuits turn out to be not so complicated after all. They provide some of the most common mods as options that you can turn on or off. At least one reviewer claims that it can't be done, but I see nothing to stop you from changing out the pickups or tone caps.

    I like my Les Pauls solid, heavy, and traditional so I'm not a fan of weight relieved bodies but am a fan of the phase and split switches which are my only exceptions for the extra Jimmy Page tone versatility. Also I like the feel of the more fatter 58' or 59' neck profiles. Lastly, I'd go with classic PAF style humbuckers like the 57' classic pickups. Gibsons standards should also be priced at least $1,999 instead of being $3000+ where most people can't afford it.
