I started on BIPAP therapy about a month ago. I had a rough time with the nasal pillows. Even with my humidity turned up to 7 on my Resmed, I still woke up with intense dry mouth and knew my BIPAP therapy wasn't being very effective. I finally relented and went with a full facemask. I chose the ResMed AirFit F30. I am so glad I chose this mask. I has the nose cradle instead of the pillows or the full nose cover. The nose pillows irritated my nose. After a little bit of a learning curve, this hybrid mask has become my lifesaver. I was having 48 events per hour before therapy. Last 3 nights with this new mask have been under 5 events. You are definately right about over tightening the straps. Most time it will cause more leakage. I know its difficult in the begining but don't stop trying. I lost a lot of sleep getting used to BIPAP therapy but its truly starting to get easier and now I'm starting to see some positive results. Don't give up.

I am fairly new on CPAP and have been struggling with some dry mouth and mouth breathing issues. I think the mouth breathing is worse than my snoring for my wife. I've been working with my Dr and DME to find the right mask but it's been tough to find one that also doesn't leave red marks all over my face.
This is the first time anybody has suggested turning up the heat so thank you for that tidbit from your video. I just found your youtube vidoes and they are quite informative. Thank you.

I have to say I was diagnosed with severe OSA, but it was on the border of moderate. I started using CPAP and for a while it worked. I noticed that in Sleepy Head my machine was helping me several times per night, however that changed. Now I have one to no events at all and my sleep doctor said, well either the machine is doing a real good job or you don't have OSA any more. How on earth does OSA get better in three months. The only explanation I could see was when I had my sleep test done my Testosterone level was 1800. It should have been more like 500. So, over the next month or so my doctor decreased my T level by reducing my dose of Testosterone and now it is about 430. I read that high T levels will make OSA worse. My other doctor doesn't believe this at all. They think I will die without using this machine every night. I don't use it any more and I never wake up gasping for air any longer. So, I believe that some medications can cause OSA and this should have been addressed when I had my consult with the sleep specialist. He didn't even address the actual problem I have with sleeping and that is massive muscle twitches. As I drift off my muscles will twitch so badly that my leg may shoot strait up in the air or my neck will snap so hard to the right or left it cracks the joints. He thought the CPAP would fix that as well. Who will fix stupid doctors? I am upset I spent so much money and I am really no better off than before.

I suggest you try magnesium spray. Something like 60% of Americans are deficient in magnesium. Use it before bedtime. For more info search for "13 Magnesium Oil Benefits" on Organic Authority.com. Maybe that will have something helpful.

Use Sleepyhead to check your data. You probably have a mouth leak or the pressure is too low. Ever wake with dry mouth? That would be a mouth leak.

Sounds like your nose was congested. That's one of the downsides of nasal pillow masks. Heated humidity is necessary with these used in line with your CPAP. Make sure its turned on and start at 3-4 and change from there. You may need a full face mask if congestion remains an issue for you.

    Sleep apnea sucks

  • @jblackbath

Man is it ever frustrating. I just got mine two days ago with a default nasal mask. This is a machine that is supposed to treat apnea and help you get a full nights sleep. So far, both nights, I can barely sleep because of it, (i eventually have to take the mask off and turn the machine off like four to five hours later) and when I do wake up with a terrible headache and all my upper back muscles feel like theyve been pulverized. First night- Ive never slept worse in my whole life! Second night (aka, right now, waking up at 4:38am after going to bed with it at midnight), headache is a lot less painful, but my back is destroyed again (tonight was the first night i added water to the machine). My Doc told me in my case the setting is a 3 and then to press that gradual button. That gradual button eventually lets off high pressure cold air, which the cold becomes the sore in my ass that keeps waking me up.
So after the first night I knew I needed a full face mask. However, since my insurance doesnt cover it, I took a plastic oxygen mask from my asthma machine and fixed it up by covering the holes with tape. However, i can tell you air does definitely still escape from all the sides of my rigged-up mask.
Any advice would greatly be appreciated. If this goes on I may very well just say the hell with all of it- at least with the apnea i get more than five hours of straight sleep! And while Im at it, are there any full face masks under say, $50?
Thanks for reading my rambling thesis!

    • @Freecpapadvice
      @Freecpapadvice  9 років тому +1

Antonio Deleo Check Craigslist for masks under $50. I don't know where you live, but there is always someone selling CPAP masks.
Sounds like most of the problems are mask problems. Once you get a proper full face mask you'll probably be alright. This is assuming that you're at the right pressure.

I was wondering whether the positive pressure makes the lungs more efficient at exchanging gases because of "stretching" out of the lungs. Does that ring a bell?

Last night was my first night using the auto cpap. I purchased a Res Med unit with a Res Med pillow mask. I didn't sleep well. At times it seemed like there was too much air and it was hard to breath. I ended up taking it off. I also like to sleep on my side...and the mask did not seem to work well with that. I woke this morning with a stuffy nose.

Hi Jason, I just started my cpap therapy at 7cm on a DS560TS Respironics. It seems the machine is training "me" instead of me training "it". What I mean is that the airflow from the machine stops before I complete my inhalation. I'm in the middle or close to the end of my inhalation and the air pressure suddenly drops which has the effect of disturbing the even flow of my inhalation. This in turn is an irritant which stops me from falling asleep. I don't understand why it's doing this! Help!

I have to say my problem is not run of the mill. I have a TBI and when i have the mask on... i can't handle any pressure on my face or head. I've been using the mask (which is chose because of it's light impact) is still causing pain and memory pressure. I too, have found that i take it off in the night, without my knowledge, until i wake up and start feeling around. I have the Philips Respironics Dream Station with the DreamWear mask. Plus, for weeks now, i am exhausted, EXHAUSTED and feel worse than before i started this mess. Any thoughts? My sleep clinic, turns out doesn't have a clue (so i'm at a loss).

For me it was the opposite.
Everyone here gets a Auto CPAP but is did not work for me.
So they had to switch it's function to constant pressure.

taxevazion It still can if there is a large leak. This is easily fixed though. Just make sure you're using heated humidity.

It probably should be training you. You do have a Sleep Disordered Breathing problem after all!
This may be because the AFLEX is set to the greatest amount of relief, 3. Turn this setting off or down to one. This is likely the cause of the air decreasing like you say. It should be a simple setting you are able to access from the main menu. I believe it's the upper right of the four options on your machine.

This guy is trying to offer help and probably without compensation. Thanks to him. However he is one of the most annoying “teachers” I’ve heard. By 2:09 I was so annoyed by his mumbling, his throat clearing, his constantly correcting himself, and his refusal to speak up so somebody can hear him that I had to shut him off. Maybe somebody else can help me.

Ronnie Libra Just responded to another of your UA-cam Posts. Also got your email and the link to the "other" forum and took a look at some of the posts with SleepyHead. Looks like the total leak is over 100lpm. That's frickin' high!!! Try the Full Face Mask for a couple days and then post on my forum if you wouldn't mind. Put up a SleepyHead screenshot, but select the "daily" tab. I need to see the trends of the channels throughout the night. Have Flow, Pressure, Leak, and Event Flags up at the top. Those I need to see. Get a couple nights of data with the FFM though, then we can revisit. Sound good?
